Bad place to work
Production associate (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON18 May 2019
Major favoritism with specific workers. Some employees get to choice there breaks. Length, time of there break, how many breaks they take and if they rotate stations/jobs.

Suppose to get 2 x 15 mins and 30 min lunch, but take alot more then that. They take up to 25 minute "washroom" breaks multiple times a day or leave there station on the line to take a stroll to visit their girlfriend/friend to chat.

Pick what jobs they want to do and if they are forced to work somewhere they don't want to, they go home "sick" without any repercussions and unlimited edays.

A couple have personal make out corner in cafeteria , but have gone to HR to complain about another couples showing affection. Not close to what they do. Other couple we told they had to take separate breaks but the complaining couple where allowed to keep same breaks. They text on the floor all through the shift and arrangements to make every break and lunch together to make out in cafeteria or smoking area. Including taking double breaks to make their encounters happen. Multi complants to HR, but nothing been done.

If you are TL/Supervisor/Upper management/Material handler or lucky to be family/friend of them you are golden. You can do what you want, when you want, how you want, treat and talk to other anyway you want (harass/bully/intimidate/make threats) without repercussions. Rules/laws and company policies do not apply to them. If you report anything or complain you become target/ignored and they find a way to fire you using company policies/laws you are asking to be enforce or make it so unpleasant
more... for you that you quit.

So good advise if you want to work at southmedic. If you don't want to be treated like a human or have any rights this job is for you.

Work hard to become close friend/family with management/company favorites and you will have the golden ticket to the magical world of Southmedic.

Logistics Manager (Current Employee) –  Barrie, ON22 April 2019
I have been with Southmedic for the past 6 months and have seen steady improvement. Morale was low when I started but it has steadily improved in my short tenure. People are smiling and laughing more. The new management team are determined to improve things. Benefits have recently improved and all employees are included in the bonus plan.

If you are looking at joining an up and coming organization, Southmedic, for me, was a great choice!
Pros
Local, Great people, Benefits + Bonus & Free Coffee

Team Lead (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON7 April 2019
This place will work you to death and they don't care! It's disturbing how many people have to take mental health leave because of the damage this place does. If you are any higher up than production; forget having a life or maintaining your sanity. Get out! Don't walk, RUN!!

Poor management and a very poor place to work, do not recommend
QA Analyst (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON3 March 2019
If you value any type of career do not work here. Poor management, no training and wage is severely underpaid for the amount of work expected. They had some great supervisors in the clean rooms but anywhere outside of there was awful. The management in quality was the worst I’ve ever seen, favouritism was a huge factor, if you had big boobs and pretty eyes you went far but if you had in field experience it meant nothing.

Southmedic is a great company to work for. I have been here for five years and counting. I do feel there is no moving up in my current position though, which hinders me.

Terrible management. Would not recommend
Team Leader (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON17 January 2019
I worked there for 3 years as a team leader. Watched as supervisor after supervisor came and went. Always hiring someone else who had no idea what they were about to step into. Or how anything worked or functioned inside of the factory. And with very little training for these supervisors . Leaving the teamleaders to basically train there own “supervisor”. Which works out about aswell as it sounds like it should. And then when that ones gone. They over look everyone inside the building that understands and knows the job. Just to hire someone else to fail 6 months later

Watched as this company started to grow. Then they fired the GM. Hired a new one. And watched as everything started going backwards. Things we had fought for to get fixed. Went back to the old ways. Frustrating everyone. But again theyre on to the 3rd gm in 3 years after the 2nd didnt work out.

They have a bad habit of re hiring people theyve fired or had quit into higher positions they once held. Doesnt do good for morale.

The place is so unorganized its not even funny. No one knows how to properly schedule workorders for consistant workflow. People who order the materials to keep lines up an functioning dont know what theyre doing. Lines are consistantly down due to no materials.

Long story short. If you thrive in chaos. This place is for you
Cons
Terrible pay. Terrible management. Terrible culture. Unorganized.

Great People, horrible management.
Millwright/Electrician (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON7 January 2019
Working with the people was generally awesome. New management came in and turned the culture very sour. Attitudes changed, turnover surged, quality dropped with no true solution in sight. Still a pit of Nepotism as referred to by many people.
Pros
Many nice people to work with. Good perks
Cons
No management direction. No solutions

Assembly Worker (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON22 October 2018
This place is a joke. They'll hire you until your contract ends then replace you as soon as it does so they won't have to give you benefits. Don't work there unless you really enjoy being as disposable as yesterday's garbage. The turnover rate is definitely a lot higher than the morale at that place. I saw about 100 people come and go in the short time I was there!
Pros
Friendly co workers for the most part
Cons
No job security whatsoever, no training, low wage, and fake advancement opportunities.

Bad stressful culture and terrible compensation
Production Associate (Former Employee) –  Various lines13 September 2018
Minimum wage with no room for advancement. Team leaders working there for 20 years make a couple dollars over minimum wage. Literally going nowhere here and the stress can be ridiculous.

They like to cycle you on 6 month contracts without benefits or a raise... and if you do get hired you get the worst benefits package you can imagine. Funny for a medical supply facility

not compensated, stress

QUALITY/COMPLIANCE SPECIALIST (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON3 September 2018
Talk about favouritism!
Some of the staff can do no wrong.
The hard workers are not noticed because the bosses are always in a meeting and have no time to assess their areas and provide feedback.
Positions are given to people with no direction of how to change positions and the training is next to none on the job.

Low paying job with poor benefits and little opportunity for meaningful advancement
Assembly Line Worker (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON26 August 2018
The work is repetitive but relatively easy. The physical work environment is generally acceptable.

However, depending upon where you are working the moral can be characterized as being negative. Much of the poor moral is to due managements acceptance of full time employees including Team Leaders being rude to new employees rather than providing them with meaningful training so they are able to perform their jobs at a quicker rate of speed.

For the most part team leaders and supervisors are poorly educated and lack management experience so they believe that the only way to get production is stand over people and threaten them with their jobs. Senior management needs to be present on the shop floor and observe the culture that is being created and take steps to nurture a more positive and progressive environment.

If you want to be a contract employee forever than this is for you
Material Handler (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON24 July 2018
Always told it would be full time until it was contract time then another contract always offered never full time permanent with benefits. All they want is yes people who don't think and don't speak up for themselves. If you looking to go nowhere and do a mindless job but take lots of bull then this is for you.

Most managers have no idea what they are doing!!

Maybe if you really desperate for a job then go here but really you would be better off flipping burgers at a burger joint than working here.

Do not work here if you value yourself
Assembly Line Worker (Former Employee) –  Barrie, ON24 July 2018
The full time employees will make you miserable. First day was told I wasn’t fast enough and laughed at. Employees speak to each other in their language about you right in front of you. They have no respect. If your in a “clean room” and you need a drink of water it’s an inconvenience, your wearing gloves a hairnet a hood over your head and a jacket in the middle of a factory but if you need a drink of water your looked at like your crazy and stupid. If you start working there with a friend and they know that they will put you on opposite breaks on purpose. You are not trained on anything your shown how to do something maybe once and just expected to do it. The supervisors and managers literally just walk around. When I brought my concerns to a manager he tried to justify the way I was being treated because “that’s their culture”. Do. Not. Work. There.

Opportunity for career development abounds
Human Resources Coordinator (Current Employee) –  Barrie, ON17 July 2018
Get ready for a challenge and opportunity! Your attitude and drive determine your experience at SMI – since they’re a growing company, there’s lots of opportunity to move up within the organization, and I’ve seen it first hand many times. Positivity begets positivity and this is a great organization to have a career in. I am currently employed at Southmedic and don’t plan on leaving.
