Expense Consultant (Former Employee) –  Philadelphia, PA20 February 2018
I was in a newly created position establishing procedures. Upper management was helpful in getting completing my tasks. The were obstacles as expected with a newly created position but most of the people I dealt with were helpful.

Systems Analyst - Field IT support (Current Employee) –  Hamilton, NJ15 January 2018
Very little micro management and not a stressful environment.
Only problem is no career path. Everybody is cooperative and the pay and benefits are fair.

I had a good time working there. A typical day is fairly smooth as long as you do your work. if you are not keeping up managers will call it to attention.

Fun workplace with interesting customers.
Sales Associate (Current Employee) –  Raleigh, NC11 July 2017
The culture is one that breeds starting early and staying late. This is probably one of the larger electrical distributors in the area.
There is not a lot of structure which requires you to be a self starter and utilize the resources to figure things out. Overall it is a good and fun place to work.
Pros
Cookout every Friday
Cons
No company vehicles

MRO Storeroom Coordinator (Former Employee) –  Washington, WV9 September 2017
Company forced overtime and the manager had no management experience. Promotions are based on who you are friends with in upper management, not job skills.

Paid time off and good benefits

Lighting project estimator, Counter sales manager (Former Employee) –  Hagerstown, MD30 March 2017
I lost a more than 20 year carrer postion due to poor management from many levels. Management listens to and acts on gossip regardless of validity. No questions asked removed from the property after over 20 years of faithful unrelenting service. I never received even one bad evaluation.

This is not a company that I would suggest working for. There are many other electrical distributors that will treat you better with more respect for you and your family.

Too many unqualified managers, every employee is only worried about themselves

Material Handler (Former Employee) –  Jackson, MS3 June 2017
This company wants you to do a job that should be paid 20 dollars an hour but only wants to pay you 10 an hour if that tells you anything. Poor management and can't keep anyone due to low pay and no advancement.
Pros
Weekends off.
Cons
Low pay, do not pay overtime, no room for advancement, poor training.

Tool Crib Attendant (Former Employee) –  Portland, TN29 June 2017
You do not want to work for this company in portland, tn. The boss there treats everyone like dirt. He is always right about everything, and will treat you like you're dumb as a rock and laugh at you in your face about it.

Web Designer (Former Employee) –  Philadelphia, PA23 January 2017
Sonepar is a great, steady place to work. The company does seem to utilize consultants too much at too high a price. The workplace is a bit behind the times in tech, and the culture is a little bit older. Overall I would work for this company again.

Outside Sales (Former Employee) –  Lewisville, TX25 April 2016
This company is a great place to work if you are working for the right managers. This corp mentality is a distant one considering the lack of communication.

This is a company that would have been bought by grainger a long time ago if sonepar did not own them.

3rd shift warehouse (Former Employee) –  Eau Claire, WI6 November 2016
Lead was always on the phone. Driving the forklift on the phone, and putting everyone in danger. Lead was not a team player, and only did the bare minimum. Everyone else on days was great. This is a third shift nightmare position.

Profit at any cost.
Outside sales (Former Employee) –  Regional Branch21 January 2016
Sonepar bills their company as a conglomerate that purchases existing distributorships and maintains the small company feel.

The small company soon disappears, cell phone monitoring software is added to the phone that the employee must purchase. Computers are loaded with software that is so secure it prevents you from being able to perform your duties.

.....Then the profit requirements are implemented, every order must meet a minimum gross margin, successful branches are expected to pull extra load to support the mismanaged branches. If you are very good are your position and happen to have a few good years in a row, your commission will be reevaluated to align you with your real market value.

Mid level mangers are purely political entities, very few have real knowledge of what it takes to succeed.

I truly enjoyed my job for many many years, when the authoritarian regime took over it was no longer a career I could be proud of.

Large Private Company

Great way to enter and learn an industry, but not a place to stay too long
Network /Desktop Support Specialist (Current Employee) –  Hamilton Square, NJ28 October 2014
Sonepar is a good company. Its success and growth have been increasing dramatically - growth in the states It's pretty amazing to see, and honestly, pretty fun to be a part of.

That said, you have to be careful that you don't stop learning. The environment is fairly one dimensional, so it's pretty easy to be forgotten about. If things stop getting challenging, you're staying there too long. For most people, this happens in about 2 and a half to 4 years. By then, you'll learn everything you can about the company. I say this as a caveat to anyone looking to apply.

Sonepar is a great company and worth applying to. It has a lot to offer to people with not much experience, but it's important to know that it won't take long for you to want to take the experience and move elsewhere
Pros
Pretty good work environment, co-workers become your friends, health care benefits are good, frequent cater lunches
Cons
As the company gains so many users, it corporate model continue to be a bigger issue, new positions/structural changes seem a little arbitrary
