Transfer and Shipment Organizer (Former Employee) –  Nanaimo, BC4 March 2019
Business for a building materials supplier slows down during the winter, meaning managers only want enough people employed to run during the slowest time of the year. This means when you fill a certain role, management wants you there as long as possible.

Office Worker (Former Employee) –  Sidney, BC25 February 2019
Ask yourself "why is there such a great turnover at Slegg?" If you look on media such as Facebook, Linkedin, etc you can check to see who worked there and follow up with them on their experiences.
I am most confident people will tell you their experience and then you can make the decision to accept or decline. Be informed?

Good job if your not soft.
Forklift Operator/Order Picker (Current Employee) –  Langford, BC9 February 2019
Decent place to work. Hard work though, and you must do it all outside in all weather conditions. The customers are always fun to work with and find out what projects they are working on and help them find the materials they need to complete their projects.

The pay is on par with the rest of the island. If you come in with little to no experience expect to be paid accordingly. But as you learn more you will get paid more, and there is a lot to learn.

The benefits plan is really good if you can pass the 18 months required for full benefits, but you'll get a smaller version of the benefits after 3 months, plus monthly company provided food days (bbq of some kind or pizza) not to mention many different discounts at random places on Vancouver Island, food trucks roll in as well, and of course an employee discount and uniform (shirt / hats).

There is very high employee turnover here though. I've found so far that out of the 20 (made up number) people that started working there since last year, 18 of them quit due to weather or hard work, Yes most left on their own, and all with different random reasons.

The training provided by other staff members is adequate enough, but you will really have to pick up a lot of knowledge on your own about the products and services provided at Sleggs, for which they have online learning programs free to employee's. You can also ask some of the more senior staff, they have good solid knowledge as well. But if you don't ask or can't find the information for yourself, your left to your own demise. They can show you the way, but it's up to
more... you to fine tune that knowledge. (I can show you where 5/8 OSB is, but it's up to you to find out what the customer will most likely use it for).

During the construction season (year round here pretty much) you can expect your full hours plus a lot of overtime, but of course, expect down time come winter as many construction sites will shut down or move to more indoor projects.

Overall I would say I enjoy working at Sleggs, and as long as I am still employed there by the time you read this (internet can host some very old information sometimes) the information I've posted here is as accurate and true as I can make it. For the Langford location at least.

Cheers, good luck on your job hunt, hope to see you soon.

Sales Associate (Former Employee) –  Langford, BC13 March 2018
Slegg's management promotes such great opportunity while interviewing with them and during your initial beginnings with them. You very quickly learn how toxic of an environment it truly is. Training is limited, you're more or less expected to sink or swim.Turn over is crazy. Someone is always quitting or being fired. Morale is very low among staff which doesn't appear to be of concern to management. Customers continuously complain how bad the service is since WSB Titan has taken over. It is very unfortunate as Slegg used to be a name known for its customer service, quality products and a great place to consider for employment.

Forklift and Skid Steer Operator (Former Employee) –  Langford, BC25 October 2017
Customer service is never an easy job, however this job did not have great management, they do not obtain the ability to treat staff well enough for them to stick around long. If staff was treated better by the company then there would be a much smaller turn over rate and they wouldn't end up with the issue of new people training even newer staff members.

Management/HR/Executives-lack of professionalism.
Executive (Former Employee) –  Victoria, BC4 October 2017
This is truly a bad place to work.
There is no other way to describe how toxic of a workplace this is.
Executives gossip, HR feeds into this all and there is ZERO structure in the entire workplace.

Look at the ads posted every week for help, there is a reason NO ONE stays at the new Sleggs that is owned by WSB Titan.
Executives need a lesson in etiquette and how to not gossip.

Worst workplace ever
Sales (Former Employee) –  Victoria, BC19 April 2017
Terribly toxic environment. New ownership has killed what was once a workplace of great pride. Customers are unhappy and the staff are dropping like flies. Too many managers with limited knowledge and inflated egos trying to run a bare bones staffed company. Promises were reneged, therefore staff are very hurt and looking to leave if they can.
Pros
Staff discount on lumber
Cons
The atmosphere is that of sheer dread

Sleggs used to be a great place to work , before the new ownership took over, now they are just a corporate company that gives little respect to the people trying to do their jobs ,don't expect much from here , you won't get it , nothing you do is ever good enough , and they are always changing how they do things, , most people that start , get out once they see for themselves . It Used to be filled with knowledgable staff that actually knew what they were talking about now its anyone they can pay min wage to ,
Pros

Bad ownership and management ( too much upper management)

cycle counter (Former Employee) –  Sidney, BC5 November 2016
Absolutely disgusted with this company. Slegg USED to be one of the best places on the island to work but since it was bought out by WSB Titan...it has gone completely downhill. These people could care less about their employees. To give you an idea of how these people operate their business, I was just recently laid off from this company....without cause!!!!!!!!.....and 3 days later there was a posting on here and on their website for my old job ..in the same store. Think long and hard....would you want to work for a company like that???

Corporate Manager (Former Employee) –  Sidney, BC18 December 2015
Slegg building Materials is quickly developing the infrastructure to support long term stable growth. They are working very hard to cultivate current talent and bring in the very best across the country to improve this business. I look to sledge to continue its dominance on the island!
