Friendly Atmosphere and a Learning Experience
Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Hamilton, ON18 December 2018
Working at a busy location has its pros and cons. Pros being that you meet a lot of different people, and get to interact with a variety of different clientele. Sometimes the amount of work that is required may seem overwhelming (as a supervisor), however, it is an amazing experience for any future career in customer service, as you really strengthen your customer service skills, time management skills, and organization skills. This position is definitely something to consider if you like being busy, and like the challenge of a customer-oriented work style. Cons would have to be the salary, as the workload is hefty and the salary is.. well... not so much. I would consider being full time if the pay were about... $5/hr higher than it is... But overall, great experience for students, or a casual job (to keep your stress levels up!) lol
Pros
Great customer atmosphere, Diversity of Clientele, Positive Work Enviroment
Cons
Salary, Workload vs Pay, People Swapping Shifts

Bad Management.
Supervisor, Cashier, Receiver, Cash Manager (Former Employee) –  Grande Prairie, AB10 November 2018
The management is always awful regardless of which SDM you work at. Don't expect any encouragement or praise from anyone. And expect to work in multiple depaetments. For example: if you were hired as a cashier you'll also do the job of merchandisers on top of your other duties. Supervisers have their own responibilites as well as being a cashier-merchandiser. And so on and so forth as you (if you're lucky) climb your way in the store you work at or possibly the company.

If you hate yourself and want to make less than what your reaponsiblility amount is, then by all means, work for Shoppers Drug Mart.

Leader in Retail
Front Store Manager (Current Employee) –  Gananoque, ON11 January 2019
Shoppers Drug Mart has pretty much been my entire working life. I was given the opportunity to grow from entry level to management. I learned all aspects of retail management from this company. Culture is currently in a shift due to the Loblaws acquisition and it still does not seem defined. But they seem to be working on it. Worst part of this job is the ability to maintain a level work/life balance. Best part of the job is the relationships that one can build.
Pros
Fair management compensation, leader in the industry
Cons
Long hours, sometimes unrealistic demands

Way too much negativity, only care about money making
Receptionist/Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB11 January 2019
This is an intensely negative place to work. Everything is not as it appears, so if you work there I would be very careful about who you trust, unless you like working in a place that pits people against each other. This company cares mostly about making money, they only have specialists there, two of whom that are the most diva like people and have made several employees go home crying. They do not value hard-working, loyal people, they value people who step on other people to get ahead in the company. The office politics are awful. This is a huge company owned by Loblaws. There are very mean people there that pretend to be nice.
Pros
Free lunches from drug reps, good benefits
Cons
Mediocre pay for workload, gossipy, negative environment

Supervisor (Former Employee) –  Pickering, ON20 November 2018
store was constantly under pressure from management. the staff were mostly good workers, but it was hard to keep them. a lot of capable people left for other locations to escape the stress.

hours were okay, but promises for promotions or raises were rarely kept. if you did well, it was expected and left unacknowledged. if you did poorly, you were chastised. a lot of negativity in the workplace, especially towards long-term staff.
Pros
good discount, useful entry-level skills, easy to book days off
Cons
unreliable managers, broken promises, high stress for even a retail job

Can be amazing depending on the people.
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) –  Hamilton, ON17 November 2018
Shoppers Drug Mart requires management to be !00% self starters as there is no real consistency in the training and development provided. If you don't take the reigns into your own hands, you may not even be noticed or considered for advancement. There is no planning or nurturing of employees or managers. It really is sink or swim.
As for culture, each store is a universe unto itself and depends on the personalities of the people you work with on a daily basis. The job is demanding and fast paced and that means that many times efforts go unrecognized or unappreciated. The sense of accomplishment is not obvious or even attainable at some times.
The hardest part of the job is trying to be the best you can be without any guidance and staying positive. You really have to be able to see your own potential and learn how to maximize it on your own.
The best part of the job is seeing staff thrive when given tasks and seeing customers leave with a full bag of products and a smile on their face. Also the Optimum program is #1 as well as a good employee discount.
Pros
flexible hours, great discount, room for advancement if you know how to sell yourself.
Cons
lack of training, long hours, mediocre benefits

Supervisor/Cashier (Current Employee) –  London, ON7 September 2018
If you are great with people and know how to put yourself in someone else's shoes, shoppers is a good place for that. With working here for 5+ years I am always learning something new. It can be difficult though when it comes to pharmacy. Customers are sick, terminally ill etc., so when you tell them something is wrong with their medicine or benefits they can get upset. Benefits for full-time staff are not bad either. Paid vacation-time, stat-holiday pay, easy to move up in.. Theres not many con's more then pro's.
Pros
good for people just starting out.
Cons
you may be asked to work holidays depending on some stores. Some are open christmas eve, easter, family day etc.

Fun, easygoing workplace and culture
Merchandiser / Receiver / Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Edmonton, AB20 August 2018
Typical day consists of filling in your assigned customer-oriented role, completing the day's routine duties, and taking care of spontaneous tasks.

Excellent opportunity to learn people skills, basic time-management, learning to be useful and independent, and being the creative drive to make things better.

Fantastic management at certain locations, combined with a
'Family style' culture.

Can be difficult to balance workload while tending to customers, Morally dealing with the cyclical nature of the job (your hard work only lasts until the customers make a mess of it),
Dealing with customers (attitudes, pet peeves).

Freedom to pick and choose your role(s).
Decent turnover means quick advancement.
Fair compensation for the work provided.
Flexible schedule for those who seek variety.
Working in an environment with people who care about you.
Rewards for those who put in the effort and show initiative.
Great benefits and discounts.
Workout while you work (always moving)
Proximity to other essential stores (grocery, clothing, etc.)

Overall, a good job (or side-job) for those seeking a stress-free, healthy environment. Perfect for part-timers, those going to school, and 'lifers'.

Photo Lab Technician - Merchandiser - Cashier (Former Employee) –  Brampton, ON19 August 2018
Working at shoppers was fun and exciting because it was a new experience everyday. You'd meet someone new every time you into the store to start your shift. The management team was excellent and they got right down to business so you knew what you were doing from the beginning. Overall it was a fun experience and would definitely think about working there again when I'm more available.
