It was an okay place to work, not amazing but not great. Worked half the time a year pretty much decent pay, but that's how they get you stuck working there.

Great Coworkers - Pay low

The work environment was great but the pay was a bit low considering the cost of living these days and compared to other lab jobs . Overtime hrs expected .

Shiny HellHole

Reality of the situation is SGS looks like a great job on paper but that’s all it is, a job, careers have growth, this is not that. Corruption stems from the top down, management doesn’t hold themselves or anyone else accountable, favouritism and bias are the main choice selector of moving people up, not skill and knowledge which it should be. Give it six months and you’ll be looking for the door.

Pros

Canteen, free coffee, work clothing, benefits

Cons

Nepotism, wage inequality, corruption, biases, no accountability, no integrity

Not that Good

Too much work load , stressful , so demanding managers. But good , very suppotive coworkers. Salary is not that bad but not comparable to workload .

Bad hours, easy work

Always on call, long shifts, work its self was not bad. Good managment. Safety equipment was not provided but training was good. I was unexpectedly laid off.

Good place to get lab experience

SGS Lakefield is a good place to start when trying to gain lab experience. Most people don’t last more than 2 years. The pay has gotten better (started at $16 an hour, now making $21.50), but still living paycheck to paycheck. Management is alright, but has its bad moments.

Pros

Staff BBQs

Cons

Shift work & overtime

Not a fun place at all

Co workers are good but the management is extremely bad and non supportive salary is fairly low and expect to do overtime no team lunches or other fun activities very stressful experience

Very busy and stressful sometimes. But you can always get support from your team

Everyone is working multitask. Busy but salary is just fine. Can get support from management, but that depends on your team. Overall good cooperation within the company and management is fare in dealing with work relationship.

Pros

Time flexibility

Cons

Too much pressure

Annual Contract Work

Workplace - terminal work with the big three oil companies, they decide all the contract terms and change them when they feel like it. Management - management is off site and not close in proximity, atleast three hour drive from Toronto. So management only checks in when there are issues and are distant. When there is no work to be done or lack of hours they cannot help you.

Pros

Good pay and benefits

Cons

Long hours, outdoor work, manual/hard labour

Very demanding job, lots of work and not many breaks. Management created a negative culture.

Very demanding job, lots of work and not many breaks. Management created a negative culture. Constantly push the amount of railcars loaded with process procedures Constantly being broken. Good entry level job but keep pumping resumes out. Job looks good and gives plant experience, but be ready for some tough labor. Guys are beauties that work there.

Pros

Use to get food and coffee, that's rare now lots of of ot

Cons

Long hard hours, outside all day. Rare to get a break.

Poor workplace

The turnover rate is very high because we are overworked and underpaid. All they care about is getting results out. There is no such thing as a work-life balance with this company.

Cons

Long hours, low pay

Very Mentally Taxing Workplace

There were good and bad factors to working for SGS Winnipeg, also depending on your lifestyle and needs. I'll list some examples:Good: -Phone, food, mileage, travel expenses all covered-benefits were good but took over 1 year to come into effect -travel all over Canada to grain facilities, exploring and meeting clients-interesting job, learning about the grain industry and how to inspect many types of commodities. Gained a lot of skills and knowledge-co-workers for the most part were pretty cool, fun, enjoyable people to be around-Office is really nice, good-ish location (downtown, nice view)-rack up tons of banked overtime and can take most of summer offBad:-Very little control over personal life, must always be available at a moment's notice. -Scary management. Lots of lying, mental games, pressure, stress, always worrying about making them mad. Lots of backstabbing, talking behind backs. Extremely toxic culture. In the past 5 years, easily 25 people have come and gone as inspectors, on bad terms with the bosses.-Unhealthy amount of overtime between August-April. Borderline illegal amounts of hours at some times (18-22 hour shifts) _Summary:The Bottom line is, this is a cool job, very involving, and can be a lifelong career. I enjoyed traveling, bonding with people, learning a lot, but it is definitely not for everyone. The spontaneous travel and extensive overtime is not compatible for a person wanting to life a settled down family life. A perfect candidate would not be the type to celebrate christmas, birthdays, new years, or any type of weekend activity. -

Pros

Mileage, travel, skills and knowledge

Cons

long hours, scary bosses, no work-life balance

Stressful place to work

High workloads with pathetic salary. Scope of growth is minimal unless you are well connected. You should be prepared to leave after a year. Join only if you are desperate for a job.

Pros

Good starting point for freshers to gain industry experience

Cons

High workloads, pathetically low salaries, no appreciation, analysts are just "pair of working hands"

Can be a good starting place

SGS is a good starting block for those trying to get into the laboratory or environmental field. If your in the Geochemistry building most supervisors are good and will always try and help. Work life balance is pretty good. The pay is not the best but the benifts are good. The job itself is good, stress free and you learn lots, but SGS is still a global company there to make money.I don't regret my time spent there. They also try and provide company lunches or bbqs frequently:)

Pros

Benifts, co-workers, supervisors, Overtime if you want, extra training if wanted

Cons

pay
