Can be a good starting place

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
SGS is a good starting block for those trying to get into the laboratory or environmental field. If your in the Geochemistry building most supervisors are good and will always try and help. Work life balance is pretty good. The pay is not the best but the benifts are good. The job itself is good, stress free and you learn lots, but SGS is still a global company there to make money.I don't regret my time spent there. They also try and provide company lunches or bbqs frequently:)

Pros

Benifts, co-workers, supervisors, Overtime if you want, extra training if wanted

Cons

pay

Job sucks. Schedule is amazing. Pay is good.

You will be micro managed during every second of your day. You will do the exact same thing over and over day in and day out. You wilI never be trusted to complete your job properly. The team is toxic, the management is inept, the client is a nightmare. This is not just my experience, it is universal. Do not expect to have good days at this job. Your mental health will suffer. But the schedule is amazing, the pay is good and it's all in town with no night shifts. I can't recommend working here, but if you need to use it as a stepping stone there's certainly worse jobs.

Pros

Work/life balance

Cons

Being a process monkey.

Poorly managed division on Vancouver Island

I enjoyed the work itself. The area I worked in was not supported by the manager whatsoever. Expenses were not reimbursed in a timely manner. Training was non existent. The regional manager never responded to emails. Raises were late or not there at all.

Pros

Good benefits

Cons

No support or leadership

*WARNING* If you have any experience, don't work here

Brutal! Tasks are simple and repetitive, high work load, lunch and break often not taken/given. No teamwork, problem solving, or advancement, do not work here unless you are desperate or as a first job. Any chemist with any self respect left.

Pros

Reimbursed safety shoe

Cons

long hours with no overtime, work weekends, no advancement, mundane tasks, no team aspect

Not a bad job just dont go in with any expectation of advancement. At most you may be placed in a different department to fill in a workload gap. Unless you physically are unable to perform your duties you will be relegated to working the prep line and the prep line only. If you are looking for a solid job that is the exact same day in and day out, low mental stimulation but high physical demand then this would be a solid fit.

Pros

Physical Fitness

Cons

Dull and extremely repetitive.

seemed like someone else was calling the shots

Typical day was spent driving construction sites looking for birds to identify, and then move them out with use of pyrotechnics, and use of the truck horn to prevent the birds from settling and nesting. Driving conditions were off road and depending on the weather, driving could be very challenging. Nest sweeps were conducted for the construction company before they went into areas to work with heavy equipment to ensure there were no nesting birds. Once birds were determined to be nesting there, then area was cordoned off, and it was checked daily to follow the progress of the birds. Some data input was done to track our daily bird counts. Management was ok with site issues, but did little if there was personality conflicts within the work group.... seemed like certain people controlled most issues even though they had no designation to be leads. Working outside, driving, could be the most enjoyable part of the job, or it could be the hardest part of the job, depending if you got stuck, and how much of a process that was to get you out.

Pros

staying in camp

Cons

long days... 12 hour shifts

Learned new inspection skills

management was highly disorganized. Availability of work was decided upon by favoritism. Work load was also highly irregular and uncertain. Knowing the french language was a determining factor in how you fit in with the rest of the group.

very average

factory oriented lab, you more or less do the exact same thing every day. the pay starts around minimum wage, I only made it to $16.50/hour after three years of working there which is maybe a dollar more than you would get at Tim Hortons and that doesn't feel good.

Decent Pay, Decent Hours. Management needs more supervision

Great way to gain experience in many different industries. Lots of room to transfer and move up within different sectors of the company. Upper Management in my opinion should take more time deciding who is best fit for site management.

Pros

decent wage

Cons

discrimination/harrassment at work

It doesn't take long to get used to the working environment here, and you can easily make a lot of overtime. This is the place for someone looking to become a good worker.

Pros

Simple S.O.P.s

Cons

poorly managed

there is no team. Because of the union people seem to get away doing the bare minimum over and over again. There seems to be no reproductions for poor performance, or repeated problems. Management seems almost afraid to manage the workers. They are slaves to imperial oil, and safety is just an idea. It is heavily stressed to be safe, to follow procedures, but the moment it jepordizes profits then it is overlooked.

Challenge place to work.

I am not interested in providing feedback here. I am surprised this is mandatory since I am simply looking for new jobs. Not intend to evaluate a company that I worked before.

Please consider about it seriously

This is a really toxic company. Stressful environment and heavy workload. Worst of all, they don't care about you. None of my college was happy about the work here. They do 6-month contract with an extension which means the probation period is one year. They're doing that because they think they're a big company and will make your resume look good. Please don't get confused by their title, SGS is a big company but it's important who you're working with and what your daily job is.

Pros

co-workers are lovely

Cons

toxic management, heavy workload, very repetitive

Disgrace of a company

Every morning before work I would hope to get hit by the bus so I wouldn't have to go in. I wish I was joking. I worked for this company for a couple of years, and overall it was good to get experience but looking back, maybe not good for the price of my entire soul and well-being. SGS is able to obtain many site contracts as they put in the lowest bid - where does the money come from? The money comes from the employee salaries. They pay very poorly and expect a lot of work. The healthcare plan was a perk, but most of the things were covered at 80% and only available to some employees. How they determined who got healthcare did not make sense - some people on contracts got it over the full time employees. The management and project coordinator have absolutely no idea what is going on 99% of the time. The project coordinator weaseled her way into the position and thinks it's appropriate to delegate all her work to her co-workers so she doesn't have to do anything. This type of attitude is celebrated by management as long as they are saving money. Cheapest company and I did not feel like my voice was heard at all. No opportunities for advancement unless you're brain dead or willing to adopt their core value of zero integrity. Get your experience and get out.
