Long hours little reward,frequent abuse

06.15 start Monday-Thursday 06.00 start Friday, finishing time when you get back! Average 12-16 hrs shift. Can be sent anywhere in the country with no notice. Run from a call centre by people who haven’t got much of a clue and can’t take advice from experienced staff, not all bad you’ll be paid £10.05 for the privilege!! Majority of staff are amazing but highly stressed

Pros

Excellent staff

Cons

Unpaid lunch hour, but don’t worry you won’t have time to eat

Low pay no support

Lied to in training. Understaffed No support Working on your own most of the time Not safe. Training is long and you learn nothing. 10 weeks but could be condensed into 3 days. Be prepared.

Pros

Cons

Long hours low pay

Don’t do it

You only get a start time and no finish time so you can never plan anything. Staff are leaving in their droves and because of this the days are getting even longer, think start at 0615 and if your lucky you finish at 1800 but can be much later. Management at the top are very poor and only care about profit not about staff, nobody seems to last very long and who can blame them! I like so many others are looking to get out .

Pros

Meeting people

Cons

No work life balance

For the love of god if you have values avoid this company and people who work for them

Very very toxic work environment, people will badmouth you if you dont get along with them , low life people working there b***chin all the time about everyone and all. Management there is some good and bad managers like in every company but be careful with everyone there , you can be badmouthed and they will sack you straight away even if its not yoir fault. Wages are underpaid for the job role about £5000 les you get than what the job is worth. A lot of pointless work to do at that place , to understand that you would have to work there. Long hours 13hrs shifts not enough days off , it will take your social life away .I have meet some great people there but like I said there is a lot of bad peoole working there , they will smile in your face and stab you in the back.

Pros

Free hot drinks

Cons

Long hours, Bad management, Toxic environment

Serco suck the life out of you

Do not work for Serco if you value your home/social life. You always have a start time but never a finish time. You start at 06:15 and finish anywhere in between 18:00-19:00, by the time you get home you just want to have dinner and then go to bed ready to start work at 06:15 again the next day. Forget about planning a spontaneous meal after work because you can't guarantee you'll be back in time, you can request return to base but the company ask for you to justify why you want to be back at a reasonable time (which I think is awful) Do not fall for Sercos lies, yes you have contracted hours but once you have done your contracted hours you are then expected to do more hours and you can't say no and if you say no you then get a disaplinary- on average we do 50-60 hours a week! How do they get away with this?! Over time should be optional not compulsory! Higher up management are awful, no support whatsoever and simply do not care for your safety. You feel like you are just a number and that is exactly what you are to higher management. You do not get recognised for your hard work and also the long hours you put into the job. Pay isn't all that either for what you actually do and the hours you put in. Working for Serco has not only harmed my home life but also my mental health. Do not work for Serco.

Pros

No pros other than the people you work with.

Cons

Long hours, poor pay, atrocious higher up managment, work life balance is non existant, exhausted all of the time

Good for quick stepping stone

Working in a court or a driver at base. Can be fast paced and dangerous work .No 2 days the same .Start time but no finish time.Management show favouritism all the time and jobs are not shared out evenly .If you are finished early because not needed you accrue under hours which you have to make up .I also believe the company is agest. Lots of lazy people who get away with it .The company needs a big shake up

Pros

If with a nice team can be good fun

Cons

No finish time.Under hours.Bad Management in Bases.

Do not work for Serco it’s trash

If you are offered a job with Serco while working for another job, think twice about leaving. They will make you do the 6 weeks training and once you graduate they will have you working for Serco thinking everything is ok. What they don’t tell you is once you finish training it does not mean you actually have the job. You could be working for Serco for 4+ months still waiting for the vetting to clear and if your vetting does not pass, you will be terminated from your contract and left with no job. If you leave a job for this job it is very risky. You could be left with no job in the end. They say that you can appeal the vetting decision if it has failed, however it takes the vetting team weeks/ months before they reply back to you, there is no support from Serco or the vetting team on how you can appeal the decision. It takes weeks for the vetting team to actually tell you why you failed. No one cares if your life is in shambles. They leave you to fend for yourself jobless with no support. I will never recommend this company to anyone I know.

Pros

Nice colleagues

Cons

Make you do 6 weeks intense training, make you work before vetting has cleared, They will terminate your contract if it has not passed, no support

Awful company, Awful job. just Avoid.

Life as a PCO can be challenging to say the least. The Middle management are often promoted beyond their abilities, Very few honest Supervisors.Lots of staff are illiterate, unprofessional, lazy drivers dictating to the control room staff daily.Poor pay for the risks involved, Annual bonus is an insult, so most staff don’t bother going the extra mile. Tinpot company, long term staff probably can’t get a better job due to their abilities or lack of. Awful job, awful conditions, awful pay, awful management. Steer well clear of this kind of work, it’s a thankless job with zero benefits. Most probably couldn’t make the grade as a Prison Officer. Most can’t even perform C&R properly, probably shouldn’t be in this job. Low pay, so low expectations are the norm.

Pros

None

Cons

Long unsociable hours, awful pay, dishonest staff and corrupt management.

Stressful and disorganised

It is a good job and an easy one, however due to poor management from your line managers and control, you are left woking a lot of overtime, as well as stressing to meet lockout times. Overtime is paid however, they are very quick to take that away from you, for example you work 8 hour shifts a day, so lets say today you done 14 hours completely exhausting yourself, the next day they will make you come in at 6am and send you home by 10am, not only making sure that the overtime you done is taken back, but they will do it a few days, so now u owe them hours and for that they will completely use you up.

Pros

Its a fun job where u meet a lot of people

Cons

Extremely long hours, and not worth the money for the headache and exhaustion you put yourself through

Unqualified and unskilled managers

I only worked for Serco for 6 months but in my experience as it took over from another organisation,. on thing I was very aware of was the favouritism, partiality and the lack of trained middle/line managers that were employed there. I have worked in management previously but I never saw such an organisation ignore countless complaints of mismanagement from the unskilled line/middle managers, and Serco choose to side with these deviants instead of being open and honest about the inability of their line managers and staff. Therefoer there is a culture of 'fear' ie don't upset the line /middle managers as they are vindictive and would treat you bad and give you 'bad runs'' or no rums at all ie no over time. However if you're liked/favoured by line/middle managers you get the 'best trips' and always get the Fridays and Monday you want off at the expense of other people not being allowed to have the time off, as requested. This is an 'open secret' every body knows who are the 'favourites' and its ovbious who isn't liked. finally the best part of the job is when you have a fun partner which makes the long hours worth it and the hardest part of the job is when line/middle managers treat you poorly and all the other staff ignore it coz thy don't want to get involved as they are only covering their own backs and jobs in this pandemic climate. And middle/line manager count on their silence and lack of back-bone to ensure their reign of terror continues as they divide and conquer

Pros

Some honest, hard working staff

Cons

Long hours, favouritism, no voice for the van drivers and escorts

It’s lucky the staff are good people.

Pay is horrendous. Work life balance is none existent. Company doesn’t care about employees and doesn’t listen to them. Upper management are nowhere to be seen. You’re just a number to this company, one that’s disposable.

Pros

Great on the ground team

Cons

Long hours, poor pay, ignorant to employee needs.

Avoid at all costs

Wow where to start no finish time can easily do 60 hrs a week that your told is your maximum until it suits then your told you can go over them. No work life balance very lucky if you get a break in your working day then you get reprimanded for not taking your break ?? Dealing with a control centre that doesn't control and has no idea of the logistics of the area. Serco seem to have no care for the welfare of threre staff

Pros

Free Tea and coffee

Cons

Long hours not appreciated by the company

Avoid

One word.. Awful. No support and at times very stressful you are just a number. Most of the the management are not good and don't care. Never enough staff as people leave all the time. Starting pay is poor considering what you have to do. Would give Serco a wide berth try HMP if you really want to be a Prison officer as they may not be much better but at least you'll get paid more !!!

Pros

None

Cons

Long hours, stressful, no support

Under paid and over stressed!

Not so lovingly referred to as 'Sercus' on the prisoner custody contract because the frontline workers are treated like clowns. The actual job is enjoyable but there is no respect from the higher-ups for the importance of our role. More colleagues are actively seeking other employment than not.

Pros

The PCO job itself is important and fulfilling.

Cons

Poor pay, Stressful work, Every day is potentially dangerous, Up to £200 taken from your pay each month for non existent breaks, No perks.

Challenging but rewarding

I worked for Serco as a custody officer and also a control room operative for over seven years. The work was interesting and the different levels of challenges made it enjoyable. Often one week was quite different to the next. Their were chances to improve and to show your iniative. I enjoyed my time with the company.

Pros

Variety in the workplace. Chances to improve.

Cons

Some long days.

Badly paid and poorly managed.

What an incredibly disjointed company to work for. They haven’t heard of the word logic. The current contract means you will earn £3,000 per year less than your workmates doing exactly the same job. You will also be expected to work over 50 hours every week on a 35 hour contract. There is no home/ work balance and the culture is toxic. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere.

Apply only as a last resort

Serco it's the last place where you want to work unless your profile fits that of a white supremacist or you become part of a clique. There is nothing that keeps you working for Serco unless you are in need of money.

Pros

None

Cons

Bullying culture

A really interresting & challenging job.

In the job as a PCO. Training was in depth. Well worth most of it. The physical demands during training is huge but worth it. I love it as I never kno

Pros

Good camaradie, interesting, sometimes exciting.

Cons

Like any job you have the occasional bad day and it is dangerous.
