Good place to work
Metal Fabricator (Current Employee) - Victoria, BC - 22 March 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedBest wages in town, training could use improvement, good crew to work with. Lots of overtime and weekend work, can be hard on the body but that's just part of the trade.

Jobs at Seaspan ULC
Challanging work every day!
Engineer (Former Employee) - British Columbia - 23 April 2023
I always liked the diversity of problems to be solved daily, while communicating with different departments. This can be challanging and stressfull for many relaxed people. It is nice to be appreciated at work, but this comes barely, even after doing something very special or when people show the intention to leave!
Pros
Salary, benefits, diversity
Cons
Strange to find non-qualified/non-experienced people easily promoted. and advanced in their career!

Exciting workplace with opportunities for improvement
Project Manager (Current Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 26 February 2023
Pros: - Work is interesting, fast paced - Good benefits package Cons - Some standard processes have not yet been properly implemented meaning different functions can do the same thing differently - Tons of senior management with unclear scope with the functions under them under resourced for the amount of work ahead - Work/life balance dependent upon who your senior managers are - Old boys club/old fashioned expectations of working (WFH very limited for most, no progressive workplace practices, etc)

Great people, cool work
Production Coordinator (Former Employee) - Victoria, BC - 26 January 2023
Seaspan is a great company to work for, the only downside is, the work life balance, Seaspan is very needy of your time, other than that, they are a great progressive company with lots of room for advancement. The work they do is specialized and only a few thousand people can say they work at a company that does some really cool stuff like they do !
Pros
Great people, lots of room for advancement, great pay and great benefits
Cons
Seaspan is very needy of your time, overtime is required on most projects

Class 1 shipfitter (chargehand) (Current Employee) - North Vancouver, BC - 8 November 2022
Benefits are good and pay is good. Everything else is like serving time in a federal instution. Worst management ive ever seen or heard of in my 35 years as Fabricator. Dont trust anyone!

Revolving door at Seaspan. Ver high risk company to work for.
Procurement (Former Employee) - North Vancouver, BC - 29 October 2022
Management does not promote from within, they do not help you in meeting goals or providing support for growth in the organization. Revolving door, letting good employees without cause and hiring for cheaper.
Pros
Good benefits
Cons
Poor management

Good company but lots of politics
Anonymous (Current Employee) - North Vancouver, BC - 1 September 2022
It is a good company with good benefits and good pay. However the work is stressful and people are extremely competitive. Lots of politics and male dominated environment

Good pay, low satisfaction, minimal growth, abundance of bias
Operations Supervisor (Former Employee) - North Vancouver, BC - 19 July 2022
Pay on the higher end of industry, but watching the way leadership mismanages the increasing costs on the NSS projects and don't accept ownership knowing it is our taxes is discouraging. Management and HR allow bias to influence decisions, whether intentional or not doesn't matter. Promotions are not based on capability; especially in the trades as well as the office. Mostly foreign senior leadership, and female management only in the office and more for visible equality than actual capability.
Pros
Good benefits, minimal overtime unless paid
Cons
Low job satisfaction, minimal opportunity for real mentorship

Stressful work place with management destroying moral
Worker (Current Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 24 May 2022
Good work life balance with decent pay and benefits, co workers are good when they aren't in a bad mood from the awful moral that runs rampant, Not recommended, they pay good but own your soul

No concern for the workers.
Tradesman (Former Employee) - Victoria, BC - 30 March 2022
The company meets most minimum standards as set out by the government. They offer a few little perks to entice people to join or stay on. They don't have much actual respect for tradespeople who do the work there.
Pros
Free mediocre coffee
Cons
Toxic work environment

Steel Fabricator/Welder (Former Employee) - North Vancouver, BC - 2 December 2021
this place sucks, absolutely stay clear of this place. they preach safety and job advancement but unless you're sucking off a supervisor literally or metaphorically, you wont get ahead. If you miss highschool level drama then this is the place for you!
Pros
pay and benefits
Cons
everything else

Used and abused
Contract Specialist (Former Employee) - North Vancouver, BC - 14 July 2020
I am finally ready to give this company a review. It was the best and worst company to work at. Great projects yet the execution and company culture are so poor.
The company states it promotes inclusion and diversity: well, it only looks for those values while making a video of how it is inclusive. Women were asked to step out before government officials while they are touring company, yet you can count in one hand women being promoted or occupying management or c-suite ranks( you probably need less than 1-2 fingers to count).
When it comes to retention - 50% people leave seaspan. Thats states something about the company. Within 2 years - everyone i was working with was either let go or left.
The company states it builds “canadian shipbuilding industry” yet the majority of people managing and working are from abroad: uk, usa, ireland, Australia. There is very little of “canadian content”.
The values of the company: safety, care, efficiency and acountability - those are unfortunately just written on the wall. Lets address those. Safety - when I raised a concern that our contractors are not notified about safety issues or even the fire alarms - that unfortunately “could not have been done because of the system”. Care? They dont care about its own employees, let alone others. Efficiency - none observed; If anything - everything is inneficient. And it sad that these are our canadian tax payers money that are burned through inefficient processes, procedures, mistakes, poor management and staff who is mediocre. Accountability - well the company cant meet its own deadlines. -
Pros
Interesting projects
Cons
Everything else

Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 13 May 2020
The company is big and job security is there for you if you are their direct employee. Enough tools are provided to you to perform your job. Salary is good.

Not an enjoyable place to work...
Technical Support (Former Employee) - Victoria, BC - 21 November 2019
Management typically focuses solely on schedule and pressuring staff to meet deadlines without providing enough resources, support or communication. Especially communication.
There is no team atmosphere or encouragement to collaborate. Staff and projects are segregated into silos
pro - compensation is generally good
