Fast-Paced, intense training hours

I liked working there with the exception of the favouritism and the "feedback" binder. There are too many people running the show. You have different managers telling you to do 2 different things at the same time. Constructive criticism is important but when it seems you aren't recognized for the positive things you do as well... you often wonder if you can do anything right.

Horrible unfriendly and biased staff

I worked at VV in Peterborough for over two years, and there was not a time which I enjoyed it. The environment eerily mirrored tv high school- with cliques and favorites for every manager. Value Village offers yearly raises, but that's about the only benefit to working there.

Pros

Yearly raises

Cons

Everything else about the job

No Respect

If you work as a cashier, or CDC you will not get enough hours to live off of. Further still, they constantly send people home early during the slow season (which is most of the year) - sometimes this is by a few hours and sometimes mere minutes believe it or not. Anything to save a buck. They have "call in" shifts where you don't know if you work until you call in at a specific time of the day where they will either tell you to come in (within the hour) or to stay at home. The front end manager physically works hard but has no people management skills. Truly none. You will not be respected at this job by about half of "management". The other half are fine and actually know how to talk to other humans. The easiest part of the job is the actual job itself. It is fast-paced in the busy season but it's not difficult work. The hardest part of the job is living with such truly awful management. Morale is low. Pay is low. Thankfully most of the front-end employees are friendly, easy, and enjoyable to be around. Your sanity will come from them.

Awful

Worst place to work. No advancement, treated like garbage from management. Suffered an injury from being forced to do the same repetitive action for 8 hours straight because I was good at it.

Too many supervisors but good for a short term applicant.

Too many supervisors. Constantly was told to do different things at the same time. Management does not co-operate well together. Management works well with availability but does not incorporate the amount of hours given. Enjoyed the job and would recommend for a short term job.

Could be worse

The whole operation was slapdash and a workday depended heavily on the quality of the manager which was not often high.

Avoid the Peterborough location

Value Village Peterborough management was horrible. Management is on you constantly about your speed, and usually doesn't care if you work your hardest, it's never good enough for them.

Pros

Multiple departments to be trained in

Very clean and well organized for a thrift store.

Typically perform cashier duties as well as general recovery and tidying on floor as well as accepting donations. I learned over the course of my employment a little bit about the partnership with non-profit organizations. Management could be better organized. Co-workers were for the most part friendly, co-operative and polite. The hardest part of the job would be dealing with customers who decide to take out the bad day they're having on the customer service operations employees. The most enjoyable part of the job for me was accepting donations and sharing information about non-profit partnerships.

Cons

Not enough hours, no full time operations positions except in special cases (biased).
