I enjoyed my work for most of my career with Saskatoon Public Library. I did collection maintenance, programming with children of all ages and serving the public who visited the library. There were many changes with the structure and operations of the library system and our jobs in the last couple of years
A good place for young people to apply with a grasp on all the different technologies.
Not too many fulltime position openings
I've worked here for several months as a contract employee. I was paid alot lower than my full-time permanent counterpart with the exact job description, which is very demoralizing. I tried my best to meet the expectations and I think I did a good job during my stay because I turned out training (as per request of my manager) my full-time permanent counterpart whose skills are to whine and chat alot that's why she can't accomplish anything, destroy people's reputation, and brag about her connections to intimidate people. If you don't know politics and you are an employee who just work with integrity, you will not succeed in this organization. Employee suggestions are not respected as much, you will not grow and end up leaving with low morale. The Human Resources requires alot of fixing, they are still very much administrative and have not reached the business partner level. Considering the pay of the HR Consultants @87K per year, their skills are an insult to the tax payers. Their skills can be accomplished by an Administrator or Coordinator and will save the government money. Payroll sucks, they have violated several employment standards during my stay with their lack of standard processes. The Directors are very much detached, they feel superior. Employee relations and work processes in SPL needs to improve.
Some managers and staff are not educated in there position however continue to be promoted Payroll is a huge issue. Raises not executed on corrrect pay period. Missed ours not paid on next pay. Large over payments or large under payments occur then continue in noticed then the reconciliation and correction takes forever. Even after employee points it out. I feel an audit of their processesnneedsmtomocciren
Over the years the workplace culture became increasingly negative and toxic. I left as soon as I could see the tide was turning. The best part of the job was the fact that it is intellectually stimulating and most of the clients truly valued our services. The worst parts were the irregular and sometimes unreasonable work schedule, lack of support from management, elitism, and low morale. There are opportunities to move around the organization and try different roles but promotions can be difficult to achieve. I developed a lot of skills and knowledge when working at SPL. Over the past decade I have become increasingly sad as I witness the devastating impact of the current management on my former coworkers who are highly intelligent and dedicated. This is a great place to learn skills and get some early career experience but it is important to keep work-life balance and the big picture front and center when working there.
Interesting work, learn skills
