Indeed featured review

Thy have cut to many hours and everyone has to many things to do with no time to do them. The chances for advancement was not there for most people, and now you can't even get full time.

Easy work, biased towards neurodivergent employees

Typical type of cashier job like other grocery stores. A couple of things to learn how to do, but only hard one was learning the produce numbers. All co-workers I met are great to work with, at the start, YET, once you're there for a bit, you realize that most of them are recently hired or on verge of being let go, so they have no choice but to be nice and have to put on a "good face" to all. Only ones I've seen that weren't let go were not under the probation period, so there were a few "newbies" other than myself during time I was there. Management was great at the start, yet after about a month, you realize there's enough that don't know what they're doing and/or not enough people higher than cashiers, (examples being "too busy" to write down possible break times, and often unable/unwilling to help you when there's help needed at the till and customer service desk, so have to call another cashier to help), so co-workers and customers do complain about that lots. If you make a small complaint to/about anyone that's in charge it seems you're let go ASAP. It may be unionized, which you pay for at the start, yet no help from it until you've done the probation period. Training has to be done at site, so it's common to be behind on that, (even if you should have time when there's little to no customers), yet they "let you go early" instead due to "not enough hours left on week for schedules".

Pros

Eventual discounts, easy with experience of point of sale, a little flexible with time needed off.

Cons

No true acceptance of neurodivergents other than certain places, too much staff turn around, not enough cashiers, and will let you go for doing something others do

Incredibly boring and repetitive

I would give this place zero stars if I could. Not only are you on your feet for the whole day but you stand in one spot and aren’t allowed to move. You do the same thing over and over again ie) bagging groceries all day. The employee discount is also a joke.

Pros

Nothing

Cons

Everything

Don’t work part time here

Managers have little to no respect for part time workers at all whether it’s about hours, availability or just plain being nice to you. Only way to get a shred of respect around here is to suck up to management. If you work part time here they treat you like a worker, not a person. If you value your time and want a respectful work environment do not work here, unless you’re willing to put in a full 40 hours or more. If you try and book days off you probably won’t get them, even if you have a valid reason(such as doctors appointment). Also don’t bother calling in sick either, no matter how sick you are, as they will do anything in their power to make you come in.

Pros

Coworkers are friendly

Cons

No respect from management

Good if you are 16

Good for student and people in dire need of a job to make ends meet. Relatively good flexibility and some good managers. 0 pay progression (35 cents per every 500 hours worked) or about 80 cents per year. Work hard in the winter time and don't make much but relatively easy in comparison to alot of other jobs out there.

Love working here.

Flexible scheduling, amazing co-workers, great benefits and management are all very supportive. By far the best place of employment I’ve ever been in.

Pros

Benefits, room for movement within, excellent support system.

Cons

The shirts are ugly but I hear we’re getting new ones.

It’s okay

Working at Safeway was my first job. It is fun working there with friends and the younger coworkers. Some of the older workers are terrible and very childish. One has mocked customers infront of them. I don’t think they have much self awareness as well. Also if you’re closing and have someone bad working with you, you’re gonna be struggling for the rest of your night by yourself

Pros

%10 off discount

Cons

They don’t tell you about any new changes, they never even showed me how to access my paystub, sometimes not enough staff

safeway

great place to work, however many feel they’re not compensated for the strenuous work they do. have been paid minimum wage since started and only got paid more when the minimum wage went up from 14,65 to 15.20 per hour and have worked there for over a year. plus, i worked as more than a cashier in the cash office customer service and in the bakery department. overall a good place to work but not ideal for long term success

Pros

great community and environment & hours

Cons

no room for advancement, unsubstantial pay

Good and friendly place

I would say It was a pretty good place to work and that I defenitly learned a lot Now I will say the one I worked at was very dead so that made it a bit boring and sometimes they would schedule u into a shift and not tell you right away but other then those things I would say It was pretty good and would defenitly recommend. One thing will say the dress code is a bit annoying, it took me long time to find proper shoes and also Safeway shirts are massive they don’t fit properly iam 5 feet and a small was like a dress on me,

Pros

Friendly, easy going, comfortable

Cons

Long hours, dress code, time management was bad

Productive environment, constant interactions with customers

The typical day involved stocking the products inside the storage and in the store. Keeping the products fresh by removing the ones that have gone bad.

Stressful, unaccomidating

Customers are not always the nicest people. When they are unkind, they are nasty. They would get right in my face to air grievances I had no control over, and would shout at me for minor mistakes. The managers and coworkers in my department were super nice and cool, but the store managers, not so much.

Pros

Long breaks and lunches

Cons

Long hours, few days off, rude customers, fast paced, hardly any breathing time

To much work, complains from people. Overload

Worked for Safeway for about a year. Overall I would say it's stressful because of manegnent. They would also ask you for extra shifts to work. Sometimes they ignore your schedule and go with whatever they want if you're new employee. Costumers always complain in the bakery, not enough people work in bakery. My experience was not pleasing at all. Management gets upset when you just stand in till doing nothing. Higher seniority employees do whatever they want, while newbies have to stay at register for long time. Pay is not even minimum. Many people call in sick all the time and you have to fill in for them which is stressful. Customers are actually nice most of the time in my experience but not management.

Pros

Friendly employees(depends) and customers

Cons

Shifts feel like for ever

Fast paced and meaningful

As a first year baker I was always learning new things. Both the Bakery Manager and Assistant Manager were helpful and instructive. I was able to learn many things that weren't learned in school.

Pros

Decent wages at the time.

Cons

Heavy lifting and time sensitive.

grocery store

I was a cashier there so I just rang customers' items through. It was at the beginning of the covid 19 pandemic though, so we had to stand at the door and wave customers through. I stood back because at the time masks were not mandatory and one of the managers (who did not know my name in the 3 months I worked there and had hired me) specifically requested that I stand closer, where the customers would essentially be brushing past me. I did not feel as though I was an important or valued team member here by the managers. The management at this store is terrible, especially in comparison to Save On Foods, where I have also worked

Excellent Management Poor Salary/Work Hours

Have Excellent Character References Respect Company Policy No Theft Reliable On Time CleanI received New Information although I came to the position highly skilled and educated. I was not renumerated for these and felt I was in an awful "service job" because of it. I spoke to workers across Canada who also felt let down by the low wage and minimal hours received at Safeway.Full time staff lorded over part timers and did not accomadate new workers well. I went out of my way to help others ie ethnics who English was not perfect although my skill and education level was far above everyone there. Management did not notice nor care enough. Most other work standards were excellent if adhered to. Overall if you need to feed you and your family look elsewhere otherwise an ok job. I was particularly careful because I did not want any of my University Degrees to be affected by a job of this nature. L. F.

Pros

Excellent Management A bit too tough on new people though.

Cons

Low pay/Minimum hours/A few arrogant/mean coworkers.

Good pay with benifits. And great union contract. when I was last working there

Was a good company to work for when it was canada Safeway. Since sobeys took over lot of rules and restrictions have been modified and put. Definitely Safeway store under union is still better than Superstore for sure.

Pros

Rotation of holiday shifts, overtime hours. Easy dealing with management
