Reviews about Pay & benefits for Police Officer at Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Good Job

Rewarding career with lots of opportunity for growth and movement. Pay, benefits, pension and relocation benefits are top notch, equipment and resources not so much.

Lots of opportunities but difficult work

What can I say? It's the RCMP. Known the world over with the iconic uniform. Training is the best in the world. That's where the glamour stops. You're typically going to be transferred to the farthest most isolated, high crime and understaffed locations in the country for at least 5 years and then good luck trying to transfer out. Chronically understaffed, all the work falls on the ones that are left.Compensation wise, it's always a fight to be compensated fairly compared to other police departments however, with the new union, things have been improving but slowly. Lost a lot of benefits however unlimited sick leave is still the best out there but other medical benefits had been on the decline with implementation of annual limits. the sick leave is a big one though so you never have to worry if you get a major illness or injury, receiving full pay until you are able to return to work. This does introduce those that will abuse this system however management will start pushing for a medical discharge after two years on sick leave. One plus is the vast types of duties you can have the opportunity to move into after your initial posting. The types of investigative work or jobs is immense. Definitely something for everybody.Advancement/promotion system is absolute garbage unless you're in a specialized section. You are more judged on how well you can write rather than your actual abilities and experience.Pension is also a big plus with a possibility of early retirement and indexed pension after meeting certain criteria.

Pros

Training, Job opportunities, experiences, benefits, camaraderie

Cons

Salary (comparitively to other depts.), promotion system, management, stress, low morale

Challenging and exciting. Good benefits and decent salary

With my experience with the RCMP I have experienced many ups and downs. It is an amazing family with tons of opportunities and experiences. However, management makes or breaks your career. Some postings with allow their employees to attend courses and further their career as others do not and seem to hold people back. Over all it is a decent job with good benefits and a good pension

Pros

Benefits and pension

Cons

Stressful
