Was a nice place

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
the organization had seen an exponential growth and with that came a lot of redundancies, which was some what adjusted in 2017. The current leadership is quite inexperienced and as such make a lot of rush decisions that cost of the taxpayer a lot of money that could have been otherwise directed or realized as savings for the citizens.

Suck ups get ahead

Worked here for years, was a good place. Now hiring Temps and casuals. New policies and now monitoring everything you do and everywhere you go. No procedures or training but accountability on the floor, what a joke

Very poor culture and management practices

Pros: Great pay and benefits. Immediate supervisor and team members were excellent.Cons: Management is run like an boys club where decisions are made regardless of whether they are lawful, ethical or sound in judgement. None of the principles of good leadership (ownership, communication, honesty) were demonstrated beyond the supervisor level. Culture in the workplace is one of silence and poor communication with no emphasis on honesty or excellence in service. No wonder the Municipality has a reputation of being difficult for a member of the public or a business to deal with, they couldn't even demonstrate respect internally. Even when they ask for honest feedback, they don't really want honest feedback even when it is supported by objective data. When people make mistakes they won't admit them, emails go unanswered and instead phone calls are made so that there isn't a written record or anything that can be later FOIP'ed. I can't emphasis how disappointed I was with the leadership in this organization. Supervisors seem to run in fear of managers and the result is a workplace with poor culture and values.

Everyone leaves disgruntled - seriously!

This is a toxic place to work.I was warned beforehand by many in the Region, but I couldn’t resist the money. The RMWB pays well and the benefits offering is second to none. Well, I’ve learned (obviously the hard way) that money & benefits is all this place has to offer. The Leadership consists of inexperienced wannabe’s and once challenged by anyone w/experience - rest assured that individual will be fired without cause and paid to go away and keep quiet. Unfortunately, I saw this done time & time again. The Government of Alberta really needs to step up and take control of the spending and lack of business controls here. Save yourself - look elsewhere for employment.

Excellent place to work but no growth

Best place to work if you just want to do repetitive work and stay at the same position for longest period of time with excellent pay and benefits. I was working with one of the best supervisor I worked with so far.

Wasted 10 years of my life at this Horrible, Horrible work place

-A typical day at work involved me being yelled at and harassed by upper management, mid management (there's lots of those) and the majority of the self entitled, arrogant, and mean co workers I had the misfortune of having to provide technical support. -IT Management in particular was an absolute nightmare. people being placed in positions of authority that had absolutely no experience or desire in making work a better place to work in. -I truly feel that they think they have the right to treat everyone terribly because everyone makes so much money and that is not correct!! Everyone deserves Respect. When I was there and not sick, I tried my very best to provide Professional IT support for clients. -I have never met so many cut throat, corrupt c-level officials in my life. One example was one of the deputy CFO'S that worked in his temporary position for less than a year and ran out of town with a $500,000 check for his part in signing a "hush" clause. Absolutely disgusting! -The greatest lesson I learned from working at the RMWB is: Money Isn't Everything in This World! If you are in a situation where people are constantly treating you badly, find something else. Thanks for your time

Great Place to work

Union is a double edged sword, constant, some times repetitive changes by management. Overall it's a fantastic place to work and I'd highly recommend working for them. Lots of training for advancement.

Great wage and benefits

RMWB is a great place to provide for a family and have ongoing training and education. Working for the parks department you spend most of your day in parks and greenspaces beautifying the city.

Awesome job, poor planning

Well paid job, nothing too physical, great co workers, poor leadership and poor management, benefits are great, chances to advance are slim unless you become part of the boys club

Great learning opportunity, great benefits and Work life balance. All of these are at the RMWB. The staff and leadership work as a team. If you have the opportunity to work here you will not regret your it.

Great for getting experience but very poor culture

It's no doubt this plays offers a lot of experience. Remuneration is also tops along with their benefits plan. However, it comes with a great price. Pretty well anyone you ask who has once worked at the municipality will tell you that it is the worse when it comes to culture and treatment of staff by the senior administration. It is a dog eat dog place where you need to keep your head down or you will lose it. Don't speak up because good ideas are not rewarded. What is rewarded is conformance to management.

Great schedule and salary. Horrible upper management.

The upper management at the RMWB is the worst of anywhere I have ever worked. They treat their staff horribly. If you are not a yes man you will not advance. Morale is awful. The staff are treated badly and it shows. Even with the good schedule and decent salary I would never, ever work there again.

Great place to work

Loved working as a Pulse Operator within the Communications & Stakeholders Relations department. The atmosphere and the team, including management, are wonderful to work with.

Very busy and interesting place to work

The most enjoyable part of the job was the great people I got to work with; very diverse staff. The duties were different day to day and with it being a very busy department, the time just flew by.

Salary, benefits, vacation

Lack of job security for exempt positions

Short term position, good salary and was able to get out and meet new people.

I enjoyed working with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as Field Coordinator. Even though it was only for a short term, I had the opportunity to manage and supervise many enumerators of different ethnic groups. A typical day of work entailed contacting and meeting with the enumerators; encouraging them and providing assistance with difficult situations. It was a very fast paced environment as we were working on a short deadline and had to meet our target of ensuring that all designated areas of the community were fully enumerated. The hardest part of the job was contacting the enumerators that were not performing and trying to encourage them to meet their targets. The most enjoyable part of the job was the interaction with the staff and meeting new people.

Great compensation, poor culture

Great total compensation program for non-unionized employees. Very poor organization culture. Oftentimes management is in pursuit of individual interests over public interest. Current Municipal Council and CAO are working hard to rid the organization of the culture of waste, nepotism, low productivity, etc. They need all the support they can get, although their decisions may not be popular to those who stand to lose.

A work environment where you become an integral part of the team very quickly.

Working for the RMWB allowed me to have a very diverse career in my field of education. I was rewarded for my successes, encouraged to take training pertinent to my career position, and felt welcome at all times.

Management Needs Work

Management and Culture is bad to work with. Senior levels are good, but directors and managers make the culture not good to work in. CAO is trying to change for the better but the favoritism of the few leads the hard workers to never succeed.
