Very Political work environment (Shocker) and not a comfortable atmosphere. Ridiculous uniform.
Legislative Page (Former Employee) - Halifax, NS - 20 June 2023
Honestly, it was great to be a page and learn just how awful this system is. I can't believe we elect officials that make deals between each other without our input. Off camera you see politicians walking to the otherside and hashing out the specifics. I understand that an entire constituency can't be there but when it effects them their participation should be more direct. Yet, most in the house will settle on any deal with the opposition so they can say "Look, we did something, it's their fault it wasn't more". My other complaint would be that everyone on the page team thinks it's a golden ticket and that you're their competitor - or they were granted the position as a page because their parents or someone they know is an MLA. Whereas regular folk like myself had to stand out amongst the already limited spots for the program. Watch everything you say because your team or someone in this house will throw you right under the bus without hesitation. The politicians included. Next, this job is marketed for students to learn. However, management does not want you asking questions and talking to others too much. Which is fine and understandable. However, your expectation will need adjustment. Finally, Management was not very compassionate to employees with burnout. They address issues with discretion but they are just as political as the politicians - if not more. I felt anger everytime I entered this building as it felt like everyone had their heads in the sky. The last a negative lasting impression on democracy in Canada for me. Destroyed my perception of any of the parties -
Pros
Learn by watching, lots of people to learn from (mostly the lawyers/clerks), great experience to talk about, leaves a lasting impression
Cons
Will change how you see democracy, hot inside the building, Office politics on the strongest steroids ever, micromanaged with little leeway, policy, policy, policy.

Fun place to work, management not the greatest
Legal Assistant (Former Employee) - Halifax, NS - 23 April 2023
DOJ was great people wise. Any bullying or bad behaviour is quickly dealt with by management so that is a major plus. The office itself is in bad shape and needs new equipment.
Pros
Short Term Illness, Edo, Wfh
Cons
Office is not nice

Overall good but it depends on what department or who is your manager
Financial Services Officer (Former Employee) - Halifax, NS - 1 February 2023
Province has many good policies to enhance work-life balance and well-being of employee. But there are still toxic managers who think they are too powerful with their titles. They can write a very nice emails because it leaves a record in system but when verbally communicating to staff, they are the worst people I have ever seen in my entire professional working life!
Pros
Good pay and benefits. Flexible hours. Work-life balance
Cons
Toxic manager

I love being a Nova Scotia government employee. It's fulfilling and the management is awesome even when employees are going through a lot. The benefits are wonderful and the atmosphere is amazing. The diversity has been great since starting here 5 years ago.

The relationship with colleagues was great, the workplace culture was amazing, I can find myself easily comfortable here, however, the salary could be higher to live better in the province.

OK place to work but not great.
Labour Standards Officer (Current Employee) - Halifax, NS - 1 October 2019
Very backwards. Key organizational goals seems to be overlooked, not much oversight into the day to day operation of different departments. Could be providing a much better service to the public with better leadership initiatives.

Govt job with union/management issues
Financial Coordinator (Former Employee) - Halifax, NS - 27 June 2019
Often a challenge to change roles because of union limitations and "silo" thinking with in government departments. Positions often have a candidate in mind.
Pros
Good work life balance and benefit
Cons
Very hard to move between departments because of silo thinking

Jobs at Province of Nova Scotia
in Halifax, NSNever the same day twice
Technical Analyst (Former Employee) - Halifax, NS - 12 February 2019
Working here, there was always a new challenge everyday. Troubleshooting computer systems and interacting with the clients was my daily bread and butter, with the occasional networking install.
Management was great and let you tackle the problems in your own way within the structure of the organization. There is even some flexibility on the start and end times of the day.
The hardest part of this job is coming up with the solution to very rare problems that are sometimes encountered. It also happens to be part of the most rewarding part of the job. Fixing a problem and seeing how happy the client is when everything is working as it should.
Pros
each day is different, flexible environment
Cons
limited time to come up with a solution, can be physically demanding

Learning about the system
Legislative Page (Current Employee) - Halifax, NS - 28 October 2018
Learning about the legislative process is something that everyone should want to have the opportunity to be apart of. It's inspiring and gives you access to some of the most important leaders and decision makers in the province.

Good work-life balance
Director (Current Employee) - Halifax, NS - 7 April 2018
The government is a great place to work for stability and benefits. Salaries are lower compared to the private sector for jobs that require advanced skills but most people you'll work with are honest and hard working. Due to bureaucracy, it often takes a long time to get things approved.

Productive Workplace
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) - Halifax, NS - 17 November 2017
I have previously worked for Government of Nova Scotia and enjoyed the experience. It taught me about services that are available and how to contact them or have the constituent contact them directly. The hardest part of the job was being alone in the office most of the time as I prefer a team atmosphere. Most enjoyable part of the job was being able to make a difference in someone's life.
Pros
networking
Cons
getting bus home at late hours

A great place to gain new skills and serve the Public
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) - Halifax, NS - 9 February 2016
I found the workload to be extensive at times, due to shortage of staff. I have acquired many administrative skills and knowledge of the protocol of a government office and the policy and procedures.
Most of the management that I was required to work with seemed reasonable and fair, as well as the co-workers who were very accommodating when need be.
I take on all of my positions with an understanding that the job must meet deadlines and constant change. This I welcome, since I strive more in situations like this.
I enjoy working with great people and helping out the Public.
Pros
Working with good people who were down to earth
Cons
Heavy work loads at times, but not really a problem.
