Software Engineer, Toronto, ON - 19 December 2014
A typical day at work involved arriving in the morning to view the latest tech news in the industry. Shorty after we would have a standup where the whole company would meet on one floor and discuss the latest tech news and opinions on developments in the field for about 15 minutes. The rest of the day was spent developing a mobile application with a partner engineer on one machine. This concept is called pair-programming and it is believed to be the most effective method for app development in practice.
I learned many skills by working so closely with other engineers including developing modules to scale with existing projects, reusing existing code bases where possible. Finding and solving tough bugs such as memory issues and data lost during protocol communication. I learned the principal software engineering methodologies and practices when developing large scale applications using many different platforms and languages. I was involved in communicating with clients to build their understanding of the exchange of information regarding requirements, features, and bugs.
The management was very lenient and easy to talk to. Often managers would engage in social events with their employees which made the work environment very relaxing. The co-workers were just as pleasant as the managers. They mostly ensured you were comfortable when transitioning to a new platform when allocated to a new project and offered help whenever necessary. They were soft-spoken, and often creative and valuable developers.
There was nothing really challenging about work at Pivotal Labs because most of the experiences were expected. Even when certain projects were behind on time, we did not necessarily have a difficult time completing tasks, but instead just required more time to ensure all features were included.
The most enjoyable part was the variety of projects and platforms an employee was exposed to during their time working for Pivotal Labs. There was never any shortage of work and it was a rare event to become bored. Not to mention the pleasant atmosphere and engaging co-workers situated all around the office, dressed in casual clothing.
