Absolutely horrible and way too stressful for what is expected

What is the best part of working at the company?Holidays and watching the students succeedWhat is the most stressful part about working at the company?Lack of compassion for staffNo cap for number of special needs students to an EANo update job description for EAsWhat the board says about wellbeing of staff and students is only for students. There is a “no contact” unwritten policy for when staff are off sick or stress leave especially to check on mental being. First hand experienceWhat is the work environment and culture like at the company?Stressful, crowded, lack of adequate ventilation especially in hot weather. One small floor fan does not help in a classroom when all students are present. Staff are expected to handle disciplinary situations instead of Admin. EAs are used as an Octopus. - too many students to one person. Leaves safety and security in question. EAs are instructed to help students who are no identified. EAs should only be focused on those students with special needs that have been identified.Burn out is huge and so is morale.Leniency is huge because students that harm others are not dealth with. Admin and board turn the tables so that the educator has to prove they were harmed and did what they could to stop student while not touching studentWhat is a typical day like for you at the company?Very stressful. Expected to do more than job description states even if it is a very outdated desciption. Board refuses to do a new one. EAs are expected to deal with spec needs students all day long while teacher is “hands off”. Teachers expect -

Underpaid. Overworked

The pay does not amount to level of work that’s required. Severely undervalued and underpaid. Overall great experience for new college graduates, not a place for the long run.

High Expectations

PDSB doesn’t care about special needs kids. They want us to babysit. They don’t care about the kids’ academics at all, it’s not a priority, toileting, safety and dealing with their behaviours is the only thing we’re asked to do. Not to mention, the amount of kids to 1 EA is a joke and how they group children together in one classroom thinking that all these kids are compatible to make the EA’s like easier..administration doesn’t understand the stress it is to deal with some of these kids. Most of them don’t belong in mainstream classrooms yet they’re closing the ASD/DD/etc. classrooms..

Great Workplace

Peel is a great place to work. The staff are amazing and administration is there to guide you throughout all the challenges that come your way. Working for Peel has been amazing!

Amazing coworkers, management needs adjusting

This company is reactionary. When trying to be proactive, it is frowned upon and put in a position where it's too late and must react. On the other hand, when media concerns are brought up, they come up with the most extreme option to solve the problem almost to prove a point or to "undo harm" which in return creates more harm. Most admins seem to have gone through a brain washing and become unrecognizable. Students are taught to think critically, however when they stand up for what they believe they are told it's some type of "ism"

Pros

Help children of our future

Cons

Don't get paid over summer, Christmas break or March break. Low salary - can't cover cost of living

Communication with HR

Despite I had low expectations from other people saying, I honestly had great experiences with HR to communicating the status of my hiring process. They were very prompt and provided me clear time lines and directions.

PDSB is the 3rd largest schoolBoard in Canada

PDSB has a drawn- out hiring system, acquiring permanency 1.0 takes approx. 5 yrs. Most staff and administration are very friendly and helpful. Overall good board to work for.

Pros

Cons

Maintaining behavioural issues

Invest your time in a different school board

Does not value EA’s - limited pay- no increases job description from 90’s. Director / higher management know poor work conditions and low pay. Don’t invest in the organization apply to another board where they may value you. PDSB is a joke. Not inclusive of people and needs either.

Pros

7 hr job

Cons

Under paid, under valued

Rewarding and challenging with lots of opportunities to grow

Peel is an excellent workplace that thrives on diversity and professional growth opportunities. Excellent employer. Highly recommend. Hardest part of role was juggling curriculum expectations with classroom demands with work culture of the particular school you are at. Staying focused on your practice is the key to success!

Poisonous environment

Culture of fear and apathy amongst burnt out staff. Lower expectations for behaviour has resulted in schools that are in chaos and significant increase in violence in school.

Fun work place depending on school

The Pay isn’t great. If you have a good principal it will make a world of difference. Teachers attitudes make a difference too. It’s similar to any job.

Overall good schools, teachers and programs

I enjoyed working for the Peel District School Board. I learned a lot from fellow staff and administration about important educational strategies, addressing the needs of all students and valuable teaching approaches.
