Management ruined the job for me
Key Holder (Former Employee) - Greater Sudbury, ON - 8 July 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedCompany was an okay experience, management wasn't great. I really wish retail companies took advice from workers on what products sell and should be focused on.

Sales Associate/Key Holder (Former Employee) - London, ON - 26 June 2021
My experience with Payless was that the management uses lower staff to do all the duties they don’t want to do. Things such as running shipment, presentation changes, sale changes, etc. Very micromanaged at this company. And no chance of advancing after almost 2 years without having to relocate. Not for a retail job! Also only received 30% discount which was less than customers discounts half the time.
Pros
None
Cons
Lots of work, no incentives, no benefits

Insights into Payless ShoeSource
What people like
- Support from manager
- Feeling of personal appreciation
- Inclusive work environment
Small retail store with relatively friendly staff
Key Holder/Sales Associate (Former Employee) - Burlington, ON - 20 May 2020
The work environment was mostly relaxed and fun, my coworkers were friendly and became like family. Problems with upper management and a failure to keep up with modern business practices caused the company to go bankrupt, so obviously would not recommend applying as they no longer exist.
Pros
relaxed environment, friendly coworkers, generous employee discounts
Cons
outdated policies, no online store, bad upper management.

Productive and a fun environment with co-workers
Sales Associate/Key Holder (Former Employee) - Newmarket, ON - 4 December 2019
A typical day involved putting away stock and then keeping the store organized, I learned how to do sales and how to handle key holder position, My manager at payless was really great at helping out and giving work advice, The hardest part of the job would have been when we lost our assistant manager and us key holders where pretty much put into the assistant manager position. To me the most enjoyable part of the job was the environment and how we as co-workers got along and would have fun though-out our shifts.

Stressful and disorganized
Sales Associate and Trained Key Holder (Former Employee) - Toronto, ON - 15 March 2019
Very little organization. Little to no order, along with the fact that management was not connected with their staff. in addition breaks were only given if you worked more then six hours.
Pros
If you needed a day off it was approved if you notified your management two weeks before.
Cons
Disorganized, no leadership, and breaks only given if worked more then six hours.

Manager was a mess, but a nice place to work
Key Holder (Former Employee) - Guelph, ON - 3 December 2018
Gave me my first retail experience.
Was a fun environment. Had a great employee discount rate.
However, they want to keep you as a part timer as long as possible. And their choices of managers aren't always great.

Decent place for a short time
Sales Associate and Key Holder (Former Employee) - Guelph, ON - 27 October 2018
Hours and shifts vary greatly from season to season.
Very regimented on exactly what to say to customers when they enter, during the middle of their "visiting journey", and at the end when they are leaving or when making a purchase.
There is very little room for personality or creativity, but dress code is nice and informal.
Not crazy busy, and usually there are lots of staff there so not much to do except really focus on customers and every single need they might ever have.
Longer you work there the better you will understand inventory and how the large company works, and then eventually if the manager trusts you and likes you enough you will get more regular hours, but not always.
Many student workers, prepare for mainly night shifts and weekends

Team is amazing
Sales Associate/Key Holder (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 12 September 2018
The team itself gives a comfortable environment to work in and many of the customers do make your work more interesting because they give you that positive vibe to work and give services. The salary however lacks as compared to the amount of work you do, it is very less. The management team is great and understanding which makes you want to work for this company but sometimes they have to be a little strict when it comes to the sales of the stores which can be a positive intuitive.

horrible
Sales Associate/Key Holder (Current Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 11 September 2018
I have never worked in such a dramatic work setting. Management is a joke and all they do is talk about the other staff and then complains that there is drama. The other staff is perfectly fine and super friendly. I will never ever recommend to anyone that they work here.
Pros
Nothing
Cons
Everything

Busy multi-tasking
Key Holder/Sales Associate (Current Employee) - Grande Prairie, AB - 4 June 2018
A typical day, receive the shipment, unpack, sensor tag, promo tag and run product, keep racks clean, organized, and properly price tagged all while managing customers. Multi-tasking is Key.
Pros

Cons

Under paid
Keyholder (Former Employee) - St. Catharines, ON - 12 May 2018
I think management was not very good when I worked here. There was no real training, manager was always complaining and wanting days off. I was over worked and forced to take on more responsibility than I signed up for and was making minimum wage with no benefits so I ended up leaving.
Pros
Discounts
Cons
Ling hours, under paid
