Good job overall.

Indeed featured review

Good pay and benefits. Working with most people was good however some managers you had to watch your back. Working most of my career on the frontline was very rewarding. I would call myself a real police officer and not some out of touch manager who has no idea about real police work. Some people that started to get promoted were good people at the constable level but as they went up in rank they changed and became real jerks. I call this the constable to God syndrome. One example is someone I know got promoted, transferred and constantly refered to his platoon members as my children. However working with most people was good and some managers were also good. The biggest problem with this organization is and trying to put it in the right context is you go out and do your calls and somebody complains and they will go after you even when you have done nothing wrong. The image is more important than what is right and any officer reading this knows exactly what I mean. Overall it's a great job because you meet so many different people over your career and experience things that others will never have. When you retire you have a pension and benefits for life which others don't have.

Pros

Secure employment.

Cons

Some managers.

Steer clear. Toxic/Corrupt work atmosphere and practices

Worked here for more than 23 years. The work culture and management are corrupt and it is very toxic. Management is mostly incompetent and promotion is usually based on nepotism or being a sycophant or by being incompetent and therefore like them. The focus is on laying as many charges as possible. There is no thought given to work/life balance and you will most likely end up working shifts (days and nights for 12 hours) and investigating and constantly being exposed to traumatic/violent/horrifying incidents with no cycling frontline officers off the road to admin/support/unit positions to recuperate and recover. You are nothing but a number to management. People who seek help for mental health reasons are treated poorly by management and by a surprising number of co-workers. Courses and job skill development are awarded in a biased way, with preferential treatment often to some over others. This organization has a management style that is straight out of the 1940s ad 50s. Harass, criticize and punish is their style. Save your wits, health, and family life and don't become a cop, especially with the OPP. 1/3 of the force is off on sick/stress leave. That should tell you all you need to know. And remember the salary sounds good but you lose 40% in tax and will probably end up an alcoholic/divorced/ mental health issues, anxiety and depression (maybe all) with little to no support from them.

Pros

Good pay and benefits

Cons

Long hours, little chance of promotion or advancement, much abuse suffered from management and public, dangerous, toxic work culture. Shift work and constant high level of stress will greatly shorten your life.

Relaxed work environment, paid well.

Stress free work environment. Only problem was the hours got cut. When hired on I was 4 days on 4 days off. Shortly after that changed to 4 days on 8 days off, requiring a second job. Still a good job though regardless.

Pros

Work life balance, can always get time off that you require

Cons

Hours being cut

It is a good place to get started and get your foot in the door

The unit is run efficiently and with great need for professionalism due to the fact that we are front line support and help them with all their reporting and forms so they can be out on the road keeping the communities safe.

Stressful but rewarding

Very rewarding, very stressful career. I absolutely loved it. Very fast paced, tons of training, lots of room for advancement, lots of support from fellow employees - not much from extreme upper management or the association. Lots of people suffering from extreme PTSD with very little help. Miss out on ALOT of family functions and events..but saving lives makes up for it. You HAVE to have a strong support system or you won't make it.

Pros

Amazing wages/benefits

Cons

Long hours, and if your not mentally stable -this job Can kill you and ruin family relationships.

Good people, poorly managed

I work in a unit of 150 civilians and the office manager is an officer who is moving up in rank. We need an experienced civilian office manager who will actually get things done and who understands what it means to operate a unit so big.

Pros

Possibiliy of advacement and good pay

Cons

Long hours, poor management and morale

Awesome career

Great opportunities throughout the years of working for OPP. Variety of work. The greatest part of the career is helping people, which is normally not at a great time of their life. The hardest part of the career is seeing people at not a good time of their life and dealing with their problems.

Pros

helping people

Cons

shiftwork

A very honourable career

Being a police officer, regardless of which service, is a very honourable career choice. I would recommend the OPP for any individual interested in a policing career.

Hard Working

Filed fingerprints and worked on everyday police work. Hardest part of my job was communicating with furious criminals on probation. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to learn everyday police work.
