Great place to work if you can put up with whining co-workers

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Operator role as a whole is a pretty good gig, some days are very busy but most are not. Always something to do to keep you busy though if that's what you like. The maintenance and modernization is kept up pretty good.

Pros

Great pay and shift schedule, the training can be good. Great experience and nice mix of fast pace and slower work environment.

Cons

Crybaby co-workers who don't know what the real world is like

Very collaborative environment. Caring management

NOVA culture is such that leaders and most of employees treat employees as human being with most of respect and care. Innovation centre plays a key role in company growth with many educated and talented people. Company stakeholders value research and development in company advancement. Highly recommend NOVA.

Pros

Collaborative, innovative, team setting, leadership

Cons

Sometimes over loaded with high level of stress and short timeline.

Excellent Role Clarity

Roles are well defined. SOPs are clear and concise with a standardized change management process in place. Nothing is rushed unless it is truly emergency. Excellent safety culture.

Pros

Contracts are clearly defined. KPIs are regularly monitored and performance is maintained evenly.

Cons

Drive to the plant, traffic in and out. Bus service and in town parking has since been implemented to my understanding.

Significant decline in the past couple years.

Used to be a good place to work but I’m recent years NOVA has brought in teams of ignorant and incompetent management and directors. These directors and managers have shown willful ignorance in taking the time to learn what has been successful for NOVA, and instead are hellbent on trying to blindly copy the previous organization that let them go. Ignorance and nepotism has made internal progression and advancement a thing of the past and hard work is not rewarded.

Pros

Lots of good people work at NOVA

Cons

Ignorant management and directors.

Very toxic environment and fake culture

CliqueNepotism More leaders than doers - (at leas at the Joffre site) Inept and VERY unexperienced leadersKnowledge and experienced don't count"Yes" person only listened to, and/or promotedSay something that the leaders don't like hearing and... you're out, or your career path is doomedPack of wolfs-promote their own species withinMid/low level leadership don't convey messages to upper management

Pros

All the Pros are gone. Used to be a decent company to work for, not anymore

Cons

Too many to capture

Very stressful and management is terrible

Management will throw you under the bus to save there own jobs. Very stressful environment to work for would recommend staying away from this place If you have other opportunities.

Pros

Free lunches and team building events

Cons

Management will throw you under the bus at any given opportunity

Inept Management, that really think they are something special

Very dysfunctional management, some leaders are good, but many are on power trips, and live to cause employees to live in fear for their jobs. They even actually said, they want to instil a “constant sense of unease” (anxiety), amongst employees. Its no wonder they have so many fatality incidents, As everyone is constantly walking on eggshells, which is how they want it to be.

Pros

Decent pay

Cons

Everything else

Great place to work

Great company, good environment, and coworkers, innovative projects. Safety culture company that cate for the well-being of their employees and extends to providing a responsible, collaborative and engaging workplace.

Pros

Good benefits, smart and excellent teammates

Cons

Nothing bad to say.

Challenging environment

Overall its a great place to work, if you like to work in a maintenance role, this is your place. Benefits are adequate but are being erroded to match the divisions in Eastern Canada and USA. The company operates in a manner that if you are a "yes" person and don't challenge anything you can progress through the ranks quickly and can be soon leading a group of skilled technicians without any idea of what they actually do.

Pros

Great location, challenging positions

Cons

Transitioned from Self managed teams to top down industrial management.

High quality personal in key Leadership, Engineering, Operations and Maintenance positions.

I was at NOVA for 20 years. I came from Suncor. Far more civilized work place at NOVA than at Suncor. Hard work is rewarded. They work to analyze and improve their project processes and performance. High quality of engineering in design packages that work well in the field. High quality personal in key Leadership, Engineering, Operations and Maintenance positions. Always a great working atmosphere. Bad apples get moved on, but only after a dedicated effort to help them get back on track. Internal moves are available to broaden your experience in different areas of the site. Training available. I would work there again with out any hesitation. You do not see the hire and then Layoff cycles that EPC firms have - it is steady work.

Pros

Great location (in Red Deer or Joffre site) - central to Edmonton Calgary or the mountains, commute is in open countryside, excellent safety programs, very good to employees, they work very hard to be environmentally friendly.

Cons

Can't think of any.

Good company that is going through a re organization

Top rated company with a solid business focused effort. They are in the midst of re organization now. With the CEO retiring it appears they are in tough internal times.

Pros

Nice work environment

Cons

Market instability

Pay decent, very disorganized.

Poor leadership and management. Several manager's had very little construction experience and had no idea what they were doing. Many people were not competent in their job, affected the performance of the project.

Pros

None really

Cons

disorganized

Very challenging work environment

Have contracted to them in the past. Great company to sub contract to. Great culture and mentors to collaborate with. Have gained a lot of knowledge and experience with them

Pros

Challenging but rewarding

Cons

Stressful at times

Used to be a good company

Good money and benefits, but don’t go taking on any debt! They have turned from a great company, to a totalitarian regime in the past few years. They are now skidding loyal, competent, hardworking people out the door during the covid crisis, without cause. This is breeding a culture of stress and fear of losing ones job. So the moral is extremely low.

Pros

Salary and benefits

Cons

Has been invaded by former Shell management and policy. Zero employee loyalty, you can be fired out of the blue, until then you get to be scared of it..

Dedicated and knowledgeable workforce make this a good place to work

Complex but rewarding career. Very high energy and productive workforce. Train as much as you want and need. Most managers are great. Shift work can be difficult.

Culture of fear

Sacked out of the blue. During the Covid crisis. Brutal. Of course their airtight contract allows them to do as they please without repercussions. No support from management. Dictated to from above.

Great Company

I enjoy working at Nova Chemicals. They are an excellent company and treat their employees well. The work life balance at Nova is excellent and they want you to take your vacation and time off so you don’t over work yourself.

Watch your back

No staff loyalty. Management will cut your throat and terminate you on a whim. Illegal, immoral employment contracts written on behalf of ownership in Abu Dhabi and administered by anti-labor, ultra conservative agencies and their bosses, the conservative Alberta government.
