Versatile work environment

A great Station to get experience with municipal, industrial, and wildland experience. Plenty of room for advancement and learning with the multitude of courses they offer. This job is a good way to get your foot in the door for the fire service and gain experience.

Pros

Lots of experience

Cons

Pay

Broken promises

High-ranking firefighters are all directly related to the chief.Worked like a dog basically to make more money for the chief. Not worth wasting the time.

Waste of time

An absolute waste of time . They promise you a dream of working industrial fire and medical Jobs but fail to mention that they don't pay you anywhere near industry standard. They give you a hope of "achieving" the next level of employment ( lead or whatever they call it now) and never actually get you there - regardless of doing their required courses. The cheif has had allegations against him multiple times. They expect you to work away for litteraly no pay unless you're on a job. The cultural is terrible. The only pro is that you do 2 weeks on 2 off and some of the guys that you work with are pretty cool. This should be advertised as a municipal paid on call position. Be aware as they have changed their name. Stay away from onoway

Pros

Decent schedule

Cons

Literally everything else

Great if you like working for free!

Broken promises and they only watch out for the employees who are part of the family. If you live far you better have money to pay for your own gas and when you get there you better have money to pay for your own food. When you finish a course they hold the certificate over your head until they are satisfied with the amount of free labor that you have worked.

Pros

Free training

Cons

Minimum wage paychecks

Company that needs work

No regard for covid during 2020 6 beds per room in fire hall at ab beach industrial equipment not up to par and over all a pretty bad environment to even call a work place they have a huge turn over in personnel and anyone how stays develops a god complex and honestly believes they are God's gift to man

Loved working there

I worked and trained at NWFR and would loved to work for them again. They came through on every promise they made, you are paid exactly how it is outlined in the hiring package, you can get a lot of training from them and advance up within the company. The Chiefs passion is teaching anything about firefighting. The work is hard! It’s long days, you’re working from home, you are pushed and stretched till you become a better firefighter and or medic. I am not related to the family that runs the company this was my experience working with them. The officers are incredibly passionate about teaching, firefighting and ensuring they are providing excellent care to their patients.

Pros

Training, competitive wages

Cons

Long hours, hard work, not guaranteed work because it’s the oil patch

Broken promises

Ever wonder why their alway hiring, definitely something to think about before leaving your current job to give them a try. High turnover of employees, when you start they make lots of promises but don’t always follow through. There are way better options to get your start in firefighting. If it seems too good to be true it usually is

Pros

You get to call yourself a fire fighter

Cons

You’ll never be able to use them as a reference or put on a resume

Definition of Nepotism

High ranking firefighters are all directly related to the chief. You won't get paid what you're stated. You're worked like a dog basically to make the chief more money. This fire station is paid by the local government. Something shady is going on over at Northwest/onoway regional fire department.

Cons

Nepotism, harrassment

Paid family members shouldn’t write reviews

Management is awful, they only look out for their paid family members . They lied about wages and how you would be paid . Great concept of the company as paid fire department / training and dipping into oil field work but mismanaged. They are very unprofessional and have seen the chief and captains belittle border line harass workers. Very high turnover rate due to management .

Pros

Good concept of the company

Cons

Everything

Competitive Salary and Great Team Enviornment

I have worked at NWFR for many years and believe that it is a great place to work. The team is very motivated and are always being given opportunities to improve skills and acquire new levels of training. Entry level positions do not offer great compensation but members are offered salaries after getting experience and meeting training requirements. I receive a competitive salary and benefits and am very satisfied with my job.

Pros

Competitive salary, saving lives, free training

Cons

Low starting wage, a few rig-pigs flow through and make the environment unpleasant from time to time

Garbage

They don’t pay you or their accounts if you want to get home you better have gas money management is a joke equipment is a joke, they treat you like a slave and then make every excuse to not pay. Entire company is run by a family that doesn’t know anything about this job
