Good place to start
Full time employment (Former Employee) - Ottawa, ON - 2 April 2019
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThe company was ok, but the political side in the work environment was very taxing. The staff was amazing and helpful, and the company was a good place to start for any physical work in the future.

Solid company, smart people, long-term employees - maybe a bit oldschool
Worker (Current Employee) - Ottawa - 4 December 2018
I've been with NM for over three years, and it's a pretty good company compared to others I've been at (big companies).
It's not a huge corporation with lots of CYA politics and fiefdoms - but it's also not some scrappy small company struggling to make payroll every month. The company got bought out last year, and honestly there hasn't been much changes, no one got fired, and seems like there's even more work than before!
Most everyone sticks to a standard work schedule - managers and some others do stay past 5PM regularly. There are some roles which obviously really structured, and others which are way more flexible. Sometimes overtime is needed but the work is steady - my boss has always been pretty flexible when I need time off to take care of my family.
Most of the managers have been with the company for a long time. They know the processes and systems inside and out, and know what they are doing. They are approachable, but can also be strict at times with following process. They have always been open to my suggestions, but they have better experience than me, so I trust their decision if they don't want to adopt my idea. I'd say the company is well run. A bunch of supervisors or managers all started at or near the bottom, which I respect a lot, but they are here for so many years - like soooo many... maybe 10+ years minimum (I dunno) - I hope one day I can get promoted too.
Culturally, its definitely not young and hip, but it's definitely not old school stuffy corporate either. Like any company with multi-generation, really. Work space is mostly standard cubicle -
Pros
Nice people, steady company, BBQs, not small but not huge
Cons
Not a super sexy industry that gets lots of attention (like Shopify)

Internal company politics create difficult work atmosphere.
SENIOR ACCOUNT MANAGER (Former Employee) - Ottawa, ON - 10 May 2018
NM is a typical small company trying to make their public image appear larger than in reality. At NM all decision making is performed by one individual who is biased towards the few employees protected within an inner company circle. The inner circle employees receive in return benefits and privileges that other NM employees never will, even though everyone in the company contributes to the overall performance. Although NM has achieved some success in the past, a long period of stagnating growth has allowed similar companies to outpace NM. It must be understood that a company that labels itself a manufacturer, but is really just another computer assembler, will always choose the erroneous path of selling anything by using the "Smoke and Mirrors" method.
Pros
Expense claims you will never have to validate.
Cons
The inner circle receives lower product costs to help them achieve their performance objectives.

Good learning experience and great people.
QA Tester (Former Employee) - Ottawa, ON - 28 March 2017
Easily got put under a coworker's wing that I would consider a friend. From the conversations I've had with the people around me, I can tell they are all kind and generous. I would want to come back simply because of the environment. The work itself was great and coming from lectures from school to real work experience is great. I learned a lot about the inner workings of quality assurance and also a little bit of user end and network architecture from their own setup.

A great place to work if you have the right skills
PC hardware troubleshooting in advance of QA (Former Employee) - Ottawa, ON - 21 February 2013
I have never had a better workplace. Those who knew what they were doing and kept the work flowing quickly found their place. Those who did not were quickly out the door. There is lots of opportunity to learn if one is willing. Jobs were accomplished with minimal supervision, and the work was always enjoyable. Unfortunately, Northern Micro only pays minimum wage and hires a lot of temporary labour, as they are a government contractor that frequently goes through periods of little to no work volume.
Pros
clean lunch room, workers are treated well, summer bbqs
Cons
hard to get to by bus, low pay
