Company is in trouble, needs direction and innovation

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
This company has some very smart and talented people working there but it gets squandered on endless meetings about meetings with no clear direction and an unhealthy financials. The company will go under if they are not able to get their technology in order and actually provide a product that meets market demand.

Won't be winning any 'Best Places to Work' Awards anytime soon

Majority of management team is a carry over from the Janna days. Lack management abilities, communication skills, empathy for others. Many employees are made to work around the clock and get little to no recognition for their efforts. Meanwhile the slackers come in mid morning, leave right at 5, call in sick frequently and take long lunches. They should have been fired years ago. History of promoting unqualified people into more senior roles as a way to keep them from leaving. Resulting in a slew of Directors/VPs who have no idea what they are doing.

Pros

Subway line. Indoor parking garage. Food court in building.

Smart people working with a great product

This company has an enormous amount of talented and smart people. The company has recently changed their culture, values, mission and vision. It’s helping us all feel recognized, important and on top of that we want to commit ourselves more to the business. I believe that as the time goes by, we will become the #1 tech firm to work at. This will take some time but we will get there. It isn’t difficult - just make sure your employees are happy, you have a solid product and you promote the business as a great place to work. This will all help towards the bottom line.

Pros

Positive culture, smartest people, amazing product, well known business

Cons

None

Lots of Opportunity to Grow! Love the Freedom of Hours!

Ok so NexJ is pretty cool when it actually comes to the hours of work. Recently the Exec team has been switched up and it’s WAY better. People actually come to work feeling free!! We can make our hours. Core hours are 10-4 pm and it really does depend on the wok you do, but most managers are sticklers. They also recently came up with a values, a mission and vision which is really good. Now there’s actually direction. The CFO and CEO and all othe ppl are really cool, and helpful. They know their stuff and really try to make everyone feel comfortable. The ppl are amazing here - it’s the reason I’ve stayed for so long!! So I recommend. Try it out and see if it’s for you. Good for new grads for developers and other positions!

Pros

Perks, Comfortable Attire, Chill Environment

Flexible Working Hours, Positive People, Open Door Policy

Being at NexJ Systems, you can really see that there is a lot of collaboration between teams and people are relatively happy with their pay. The compensation is very fit to what the market pays and the people seem very happy with their managers/leaders. The leaders have many years of experience and are focused on making sure that their team has development plans for personal growth. I would recommend this company if you are looking to grow your work experience in technology, are a new graduate, want to learn the ropes and then become an exec one day.

Pros

Great Perks, Flex Hours, People Love Their Jobs, Excellent Pay

Cons

Quiet Office, Not Much Talking

Official response from NexJ Systems

11 October 2018
Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us! It's always great to hear how NexJ has left a positive impact on all our employees, past or present. Thanks again!

Disappointing

A software company that is stuck in the 1990s in both technology innovation and people management. They haven't been able to innovate in product and technology due to the stubbornness of management. It really does seem that upper management are in their seats due to convenience of a paycheck. The product is subpar, I don't know how they are going to complete over the next 5 years. People management is very poor on both the HR and team leaders. There are many passive managers who are very selfish in the way they operate. Vacation requests are often left unapproved, which isn't the worst deal-breaker, but it does show that managers are simply irresponsible and don't pay attention to the small things that matter. As for HR, - there seems to be a high turnover in HR within the last 5 years. Not necessarily HR's own fault but it does make you wonder if HR gets any support from management. Location isn't the greatest being at Yonge and York Mills. Not much around the area, therefore, you cannot 'escape' at lunch. Cubical land for days. I'm not looking for beanbags but it would also be nice to have a more informal space/lounge where you can actually collaborate with other colleagues. Pay isn't great. You ask around and you'll soon find out that everyone's pay is slightly below market average. Also, it's super top heavy and there are too many VPs for a small company. There seems to be some individuals who have been at NexJ for 3+ years, which sounds awesome on paper. Once you meet some of these people though, you'll come to the realization that they probably couldn't -

Avoid at all costs

Pros Mediocre pay and benefits and an excellent line item on your resume for a couple of years. Cons An organisation in decline and living on past success but there are pockets of excellence. There is a total lack of vision and understanding at the Executive Team level as to how Private Banking & Wealth Management are delivered and managed across the globe in partnership with other financial institutions. As a result there is continuous wasteful spending of ‘client’ dollars by duplication of effort, fixing poor quality data or continually changing strategy and direction after never ending consultation and evaluation. Anyone who disagrees or attempts to offer alternative viewpoint is marginalized and forced out. Directors and Vice-Presidents are constantly terminated, a revolving door, with no clear explanation as to what is going on. Often inexperienced Directors and Vice-Presidents are appointed based on qualifications only, lacking real world financial services experience, resulting in the same mistakes time and time again. HR only serves the senior management team to terminate dissenters, never asks as to what the root cause of the constant turmoil is. Advice to Management Focus on delivering improvement to the financial services system and collaboration with other financial institution stakeholders rather than just sucking in data with no consideration as to the hoops providers have to jump through to deliver it, in many cases duplicate information. Hire people who understand how financial institutions deliver services and information systems and have a strategic -

"Many changes required..."

Please take this review with a grain of salt, it was not the right fit for me as the Director of Human Resources because: 1) Lack of resources and the expectation that the work gets done regardless of what you need to do to make it happen (no clear distinction of work between titles - all hands on deck situations all the time means your team is doing the same work but some people are paid more for it) 2) Difficult to get work life balance; no acknowledgement from leadership when it was pointed out that there just isn't enough time to finish the work during the work week and all projects are high priority 3) Difficult to take any vacation time, because by the time you get back you'll have so much work that you'll end up making up vacation hours anyways 4) Every day people were eating lunch at their desks 5) Weird hiring and promotion policies, and despite the constant barrage of "our people matter the most!", it never felt like NexJ current employees were that important 6) HR Policies applied when and where managers felt necessary, no consistency across departments/programs 7) Employee extremes of type As or "it’s not my job" people, neither of which are fun to work with 8) Leadership spent most of their time congratulating themselves on their great work or pointing fingers at each other rather than working together to solve issues 9) Departments felt silo-ed, something that is not mitigated when VPs sit together at town hall and say their department is the better/best department (aren't we one organization?) 10) Meetings all day, no space, and a -

Poor Management & Culture

The executive team is made of partners of the old Jena Systems, who made billions in the Oracle deal. Back together in NexJ, they are micro managers without clear strategic goals. Directions changes from day-to-day and they are used to engage in verbal fights using foul language. New grads and entry-level employees enjoy the culture that offers simple treats, but senior staff struggle as they role changes from frequently and bullied by the executive team. Thier healthcare division is a failure and has survived by FedDev funds without any stable revenue.

Pros

Free treats, location

Cons

Lack of direction, poor management, too many cooks

Good for new grads

It is a good work place to start a career, but not good for experienced workers. low wages and long work hours makes life outside the work almost impossible.

BEWARE - Lackluster Struggling Startup

Very intelligent people from the industry Good place for new grads or short-term entry level positions Unusually high turnover rate (even for a startup) Basic perks - free bagel Friday, fruit Wednesday Lack of work/ life balance - Be prepared for long work hours Absence of clear strategic direction and bullish antics from the executive level are only counter productive to this company’s growth Note: Check the current stock price and latest fiscal results

Pros

Free bagels, Free fruit

Cons

No clear direction, Aggressive environment, Clash between the Business and the Product

Used to be a fun productive workplace

The company used to be a great place to work when it was growing. Doesn't seem to be growing that much anymore. Scrambling for clients and work. Developers are being bounced between various projects and being treated like consultants.

Pros

Location is great, TTC accessible

Cons

Proprietary Software, Disorganized, lack of focus, lack of proper vision

Productive and very good work place with Ping Pong/Foosball

NexJ is a very good place to work at. I manage and maintain the network infrastructure of NexJ, it is my first job in Canada so I learned a lot about the new organizational culture and it also polished my skills. The management here is very cooperative and so are the co-workers.
