Large variety of responsibilities with increasingly stressful demands
LEARNING COORDINATOR (Former Employee) –  Vancouver, BC16 September 2019
The jobs is fast paced and stressful at times - compounded by the high anxiety levels that can be common in retail environments.

To succeed in this environment you must be focused not only on work but also work life balance.

Great environment to work in overall with lots of great perks and learning
PRODUCT ADVISOR (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB8 September 2019
Would work here again, pay is low but so is everywhere. It's a retail job so expect retail working conditions but much better than most other retail environments.
Pros
shower and locker rooms
Cons
low pay

Awesome place to work
Bilingual Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) –  Vancouver, BC14 August 2019
Incredible place to work to make lasting connections with like minded colleagues - if you're in to the outdoors or are hoping to get more active outside an entry level position is great. Training is perfect and you'll spend your days surrounded by people who love the same activities to you do - the company pays for staff to try new things like climbing, trail running, camp etc . Tasks were repetitive in the service centre, it's a call centre after all, but the culture and air made you happy to come in to work even to face another day behind the computer, the building had a fitness centre, climbing gym and lounging areas making your work day quite comfortable. Would definitely recommend the position.

Good Company
Advisor (Current Employee) –  Barrie, ON11 April 2019
Good place to work.

MEC has a sustainable way of doing things and that is what makes it great.

The only bad side is that they will only hire part-time employee so they don't have to give your insurances and benefits. The only full time employee are the managers.

Don't work here
Bicycle Mechanic (Former Employee) –  Langley, BC11 March 2019
As a bicycle repair mechanic, during repair season you are busy all the time. Offseason dead, Standing around with nothing to do. Management did not care about staff especially if you are a visible minority. The rest of the staff were fine. Average pay. Work schedule never consistent. Just another retail store nothing special despite all the hype
Pros
Store discount
Cons
Racist management

Fun and Active place to Work
OVERNIGHT MANAGER (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON11 March 2019
Fun place to work. Emphasis on product knoweldge and skills with helping members. Continuous learning through various programs including field trips and equipment lending. Very busy and physically demanding. not much room to grow as most senior staff stick around for long periods of time

Frontline Staff (Former Employee) –  North Vancouver, BC10 March 2019
MEC values partnership and community like no other retail environment. They are flexible with schedule and their products are of extreme quality it makes easier to sell. If you look also for knowledgable co-workers that is the place to go.

Best retail job i've ever had
FRONT LINE STAFF (Current Employee) –  Toronto, ON5 March 2019
I benefited greatly & really enjoyed the many, multi-disciplined employee field courses. From hiking & paddling vast, beautiful Algonquin park to mountain biking at Hardwood hills, MEC takes hands-on-learning to the funnest level possible!

I learned much about: Multi-member service. Educating people on technical products. Communicating the benefits of membership in a Co-op. How my level of excitement, AKA: Stoke for the activities we support, effects the members whom I help & engage with.

Good family culture, competitive pay, some politics in promotion
Cashier (Current Employee) –  400 King St. West5 February 2019
Good place to work for young people and those who do not want to be tied down. Good for working a lot and then asking for long periods of time off. Health credits program for casual employees and many outdoor free courses offered through your job to improve your outdoor activity skills. Also offers free EPA for counselling and mental health concerns.
Management listens and does their best.
Promotion and training is not obvious, lots of politics, favouritism and cliqueness when it comes to upward movement.
Fast changing company so expect many changes, most of them not easy and inefficient.
Pros
Fun environment, family culture, good treatment of employees
Cons
No chance of promotion unless you are a taken under the wing of someone higher up

A great work environment where you are constantly working with other passionate co-workers and customers. The employee benefits are quite good and you will always get treated very well by the management. I wouldn't mind working there again!
