Great Culture

I love working here. There is great culture, work-life balance and lots of learning opportunities. This is a great place to start your career as a software developer. The work does get boring and monotonous depending on what team you are on and what part of the codebase you work on.

Pros

Rrsp, work-life balance, learning opportunities

Cons

Monolithic codebase

Do not recommend

Terrible place to work, stay away. Too much red-tape. Very poor culture. For them it's not about getting work done. It's all about shirking responsibilities.

Relaxed, Productive, Collaborative, Inclusive

Heavily promote a healthy work/life balance with casual beer time on Friday evenings. Never have I been pressured to work more than what is fair. If anything, the lack of pressure makes me wonder if they've just given up on me but so far I still work here and am happy about that. Flexible work hours. An entire month worth of paid time off per year! Benefits are pretty standard. People are friendly and helpful and as long as you genuinely want to succeed and do good work, you will be valued here. I can't speak on career advancement as I haven't worked here long enough but what it seems is that if you go after it, you can make it happen. They won't just toss promotions on your lap so if you want it, don't be lazy, make it happen.

Technology Associate Morgan Stanley Montreal

I was a software developer but my official title was technology associate on Montreal. Also, the following review might be different depending where you are in the world / company. Pro: - Work life balance. - Workplace diversity. - Great policies in general, felt like they were also enforced. - Great colleagues. - Lots of opportunities to mingle and socialize. - Montreal has standing desks. Cons: - Terrible banking style. - Loads of useless meetings. - Loads of regulations. - Bad software development practices, not agile, weak technology stack. - Stuck in the 80s. - Improving things was not really encouraged. - Difficult to transfer the skills you learned. - In the technology department, lots of talking, not much achieved. Overall: It depends what you want to do. I dislike imposed hierarchical structure and I like things that are well done, effective and accurate. Also, I like working. unfortunately, I could not fully concretize theses goals at Morgan Stanley in Montreal. I would describe the role as to being much closer to a Business Analyst.

Productive

Family Atmosphere- Family comes first, and they strive to make you part of a work family. They truly care about you both professionally and personally. They have very fun work environment and encourage methods of lowering stress levels. Upper management is easy to talk to and receptive to new ideas. They offer lots of perks, they may seem little but they really add up. That Company also ensures that "training" is …

Great place to work

great technology infrastructure (definitely missed it after leaving for a smaller company) - many people with lots of technical experience that are more than willing to answer questions and help out! - excellent training program for new grads (this is really a great experience and you get to meet and work with people from around the world) - related to previous point: the company is massive and it's exciting working

Sweat shop for developers/architects

One guy dictates technical decisions. Their code base is one ginormous 10+ years old java web app utilizing 3 different frameworks. No technical challenges exist.

Pros

Great setup for developers

Cons

They just need code monkeys

Volunteer experience

Morgan Stanley has a multitude of experience programmers at it hands. The projects we were tasked with was ambitious but achievable. They provided excellent guidance and theoretical training and were always available for questions.
