I got to work as a research assistant in my last year at mun and it was definitely a good learning experience. I got with highly trained professionals, it was also a very friendly environment

Friendly Coworkers

Management not the best, but coworkers are great. The pay is decent, but what really sets this job apart is the benefits and work/life aspect. One of the best positions you will have.

Good

School is good, some of the profs are hard to understand at times. New core science building is nice. Munnels are leaking unknown fluids and ridden with asbestos.

Good position

This position was perfectly reasonable in scope and expectation. The work was never difficult, and it made me feel like an integral part of the community

Fun place to work

Very welcoming place to work. The people are nice, the atmosphere is nice, very less stress and they pay you fairly. Very flexible hours to work and you get paid promptly.

Productive and supportive workplace

Great atmosphere for an academic to work in. You are supported by your department whenever you need anything. The only issue is the pay, it is extremely low for the job.

Excellent work environment.

The colleagues and leadership are excellent. However, the compensation with respect to the amount of work can be better. My overall experience there was great.

Not Bad

Workload depends on the professor, they are usually very understanding towards your own stuff regarding your degree. Pay is rather low though, so I wouldn't depend on income from GAship only.

Rewarding experience but without job securit

The graduate teaching assistant job was rewarding but there is no guarantee that the upcoming semester(s) you will have the job or not. There are tons of announcements for temporary (per session) opportunities to be a teaching assistant but they mostly will not get back to you when you reply the nnouncement.

Nice environment to work

I was a student at the time, working on various projects. Overall, it was a friendly, collaborative environment to work in. I learnt a lot and horned my skills as a researcher.

Collaborative and innovative

I felt like I was trying to make the world a better place every day that I went to work. It wasn’t always easy, but it was always rewarding. My co-workers were generous and fun to be with. I loved working in the trenches with them.

Pros

Interesting work

Cons

Institutional politics

Good place to work at at the start of your career.

Good place to work at at the start of your career. Very closed university community. Hard to get in if you don't have connections. Very few opportunities for career advancement. However, work-life balance is great! The location is beautiful but remote from the rest of Canada which makes it hard to travel off the island. The salaries are very low: either for academic positions or staff. The workload for per-course instructors is huge.

Best workplace ever

Think of all the things you want in a job. I bet I get most of those things at my job with MUN. Everyone I work with is respectful and considerate. I get paid fairly for the work I do.

Fun & Educational, Meet Interesting People

Volunteering @ CHMR has been an enriching experience for me. I’ve been a DJ these since 2002 & have met & interviewed so many cool people. Heard so much great & varied music, too. If you have a hankering to do either or both, I highly recommend it

Pros

Music & people

Cons

No pay

Loved it

Loved working here - I only left due to Covid (the first wave). If I was still a student, I would certainly still be happily doing my student position!

So many great people

People here are very friendly and supportive. Great flexibility with scheduling and easily able to accommodate time off for appointments and such. Dealing with certain offices can be a little slow and frustrating, but overall have definitely enjoyed my experience here

Productive

It is a nice to go if you school there it makes things really convenient and it gives you this ability to structure your time to make it adjust to any new thing that needs to be put in.

Pros

Easy movement

Cons

Lots of standing requires quite the stamina

Fine enough, though pay isn't good enough

They use bureaucratic methods to discourage advancement/promotion for staff. Pay is scaled and hard (if not impossible) to negotiate. Salary is currently too low for the job description. If you need to go through MUN to get anything done expect delays, it's a bureaucratic nightmare. The benefits are a joke: Not enough dental to realistically get two cleanings a year, the fitness/wellness benefit is a discount at the Works (whereas most places will give you an allotment to spend on things you'll actually use), and they make their employees pay for parking as much as $400 a year (even though their parking garage is practically empty). If you're in a good department/unit you can have a good work/life balance, and that's the only thing that has kept me from taking other jobs.

MUCEP positions are great for students

Worked in a mucep position that continued on into the summer. I found working MUCEP during the semester was great for my grades because I had more time to study compared to working retail.

Great gig

Love this job but wish it was permanent, not just a contract. I should be better compensated, however, I enjoy it so much that I stay on anyway, my colleagues are the best! My boss is very understanding and fair,

Pros

Great colleagues

Cons

On contract
