Research and Teaching Assistant (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 3 August 2022
Relaxed environment but low pay. If your supervisor is nice and has enough fund they may top up your salary but I survived on scholarship and TA. I was in ECE department. Don't know about other departments

The university is great to work in
Postdoctoral Fellow (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 9 July 2022
Working as a researcher in the university. The salary is enough is cover my cost. But you can't save too much actually. My supervisor and the colleagues are great people. Therefore, I had a great experience there.

Postdoctoral fellow
Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 2 June 2022
It all depends on your supervisor. Work can be flexible and really comfortable as long as you deliver results. They offer good benefits as part of CUPE but your contract has to be more than 6 months

Jobs at McMaster University
Solid job undermined by a negative culture and low pay.
Custodian/Cleaner (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 9 February 2022
Its a straight forward janitorial job, but it's underpaid compared to other similarly unskilled jobs at McMaster which pay competitively. The work is moderately paced and low stress, but the workplace culture is gossipy and the management can be standoff-ish at times.
Pros
-Relaxing job - great work- life balance
Cons
- under paid - bad work culture

Being a TA at McMaster is a wonderful experience.
Graduate Teaching Assistant (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 31 January 2022
I had a lot of fun as a TA. However, I relied on this job as one form of income to pay my bills as a full time student. It took me months to get my first pay, both in the fall and winter term. My finances were affected greatly and HR took too long to sort it out. Me and my faculty staff scrambled to get things cleared up, but I didn't receive one email or call from HR to apologize for their mix-ups and provide a solution to get my pay to me as soon as possible. If you are depending on this job for a living, please be warned. It was a stressful term working here.

Custodial Services: Terrible pay, Toxic management, and tasks are a disorganized mess.
Facility Services: Custodial (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 21 January 2022
I worked for custodial facilities for a few months. Entire place was toxic, they take full advantage of immigrants and desperate people who don't know any better. Job is soul crushing after a few weeks. Management is completely apathetic, rude, and downright awful.0 Benefits, and terrible pay. People are constantly taking, breaking, or dangerously mislabeling supplies &equipment in janitorial areas. Everyday I was working with a new problem. There were unsafe situations there that I could have got WSIB involved but didn't bother with because I didn't have the money at the time. Stay far away if you're thinking about working in facilities.
Pros
It was a job.
Cons
0 Benefits, management actively worked against employees, toxic environment both figuratively and sometimes literally, complete lack of proper sanitation equipment and ppe, complete disdain for their workforce.

Great benefits, but the office politics is unbearable.
Administrative Assistant/Tech Advisor (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 3 January 2022
When I first started working there, things were great, but you soon find out there is a lot of office politics going on. No matter how much extra work you put in, management's friends advance even though they are less qualified than you.
Pros
Free university courses. Good benefits.
Cons
Office politics. Hard to advance. Stay there long enough to get your degree then leave.

Cons

Not the best Union
Cleaner (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 18 November 2019
I started working at Mac, there was a different Union in place. I was able to work a lot of different shift. Then a new Union came on board and I was cut down to 3 days a week. Nothing more

Awesome place to work
Chef Apprentice/General Cafeteria Helper (Former Employee) - Hamilton, ON - 20 September 2019
If you’re casual you’re making minimum wage minimum hours. But if you get into the union then it’s part of full time. But great pay this is in the hospitality section. Becoming an apprentice through them allowed me to achieve some dreams. Worked with some of the best chefs in Canada because of them. Plus the exec chef is an absolute pleasure to work for and learn from
