Fast Paced
Sample Receptionist (Former Employee) –  Victoria, BC30 June 2019
A fast paced place with lots of work and available overtime. The pay isn't very high for the education they require. It's hard to get promoted and you have to move to another city to get better positions.
Pros
Free Lunches, Open Overtime
Cons
Long Hours, Too much work

Low pay for educated workers
Laboratory Technician (Former Employee) –  Winnipeg, MB9 May 2019
I worked as a co-op student at the Winnipeg location. People who worked there were nice but the job in itself was pretty repetitive. They paid 13.00 an hour for co-op students then if they decided to hire you after your co-op was done, they would pay you the same rate on a contract. Or they would end your co-op then hire you after a few months. The job is not worth the pay, your training is minimal and you get blamed for things that you were not trained for.

Free cake on birthdays

This is a starting point for many in the sciences. I would not expect to be payed well for anything I do but I am rewarded in experience and knowledge here.

COOP Student (Former Employee) –  Mississauga, ON19 April 2019
Did my coop there. They called me stupid and many other foul things for having a disability. They don't care about any of their employees, expected us to perform like machines, and treated everyone like garbage. Would never work here again.

Poor pay and even poorer management
Project Manager (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB9 April 2019
This company treats their employees very poorly. They expect you to have a degree to make minimum wage and you will only get a 30-60 cent a year raise unless you are promoted. worked there 6 years and the most I made (taking into account inflation) was the first day I worked. Saw the manager once a week if that, was unhappy and a hard worker so I asked to meet with him...took three weeks for him to make the time for me even though he was there in office.
Pros
When out of town was not micro-managed
Cons
Management, structure, pay, unfulfilling

If you need a first job is Ok but if you want to become a "sheep" for the rest of your days doing always the same forget it , you may have a MSc or a PhD or be more prepared than the supervisors, but they just want labor to handle a big amount of samples

Management sucks!
N/A (Current Employee) –  Burnaby, BC26 February 2019
Great place to start gaining experience, don't work here for more than 2 years! company gives no value for senior employees - they would rather hire new ones every season for cheap rates, than promote or encourage existing staffs. Company constantly changes organization, job insecurity is on everyone's mind almost everyday.Company has no thought on Employee Experience - no advancement opportunities.
The only reason some stay put is because of great colleagues and/ or great client relationships.
If you want to grow in your career, you got to be manager's buddy or go elsewhere.
Pros
free lunches occasionally - they are cutting costs on that too.
Cons
If you are willing to work hard, you will be taken advantage of

If you decide to go here, prepare to feel hopeless
Analyst (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB31 January 2019
Edmonton Environmental is OK, not that bad.
Some managers are very helpful. Some are very mean and not care the staff.
Basically repeat the same task every hour. Majority of the people feel hopeless, and depressed. It will be very boring, but don't be too sad, no one really stay here forever if they don't want to.
But if you have other choice, don't come here.
Cons
No future opportunity

Fun workplace that kept you busy, that's about it
Sample Logistics Technician (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB23 January 2019
The only saving grace from working for this company was that the people were friendly and easy to work with. It was common to engage in small talk with coworkers from different departments, albeit the topics usually situated around the terrible pay or how much they disliked their job. It seemed like everybody in the building did not want to work there and it's true, there were 5 or 6 higher up individuals that left to seek greener pastures during my time there, even the assistant GM jumped ship.
The position itself was nice because there are 4 or 5 different roles you can do to keep the monotony at bay. There is also the promise of interlab training and progression; unfortunately, this did not happen for me, but there are a few success stories. The qualifications required for this position are hilarious though; you don't need a degree or diploma. This job would be perfect for a recent grade 12 graduate who enjoys science/chemistry and needs a place to start their career. Just be careful if you do get this job, everything will be your fault.
Pros
people, overtime
Cons

A highly mundane work place.
Laboratory Technician (Former Employee) –  Mississauga, ON3 January 2019
Working at maxxam indeed teaches you a lot, but more about how to deal with people who are highly insecure about their jobs and they would rather complain about you anonymously and pretend to be nice with you. Majority of the people there are like that, only a certain percentage is genuinely nice and helpful.
They make you do labour work and do not even pay you properly.
They expect you to be on time daily, which every company does, but if you try to take leave early due to unforeseen circumstances, they would create problems for you.
Pros
Lunch area ia amazing, free coffee of every type
Cons
Horrible working hours, horrible work politics, bad salary for such tedious job, exploitation

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) –  Canada13 November 2018
Is working at Maxxam as negative as some reviewers would have you believe? On balance, working at Maxxam is not recommendable.

Maxxam Analytics functions for those seeking a job, not a career.
Pros
Scheduling flexibility, Standard benefits available
Cons
Workplace culture uninspired and uninviting, Executive management attitudes toward general staff border on sociopathy, Communication with general staff is poor, No professional development, No pension or stock options, Low wages at all levels

Avoid it
Pre-Processing Analyst (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB23 October 2018
The work is not very hard, which is okay if you are looking for something else in the meantime (which you should). But it is mind-numbing.

Pay is totally inadequate (the minimum wage in Alberta). The company over-relies on contractors. Practically everyone there is a contractor.

You will use maybe 1/100 of what you learned when completing your degree.

There is constant paranoia over losing your job.
Pros
Some staff were nice
Cons
Low pay, only short contracts available, no advancement, toxic culture, gaslighting
