Toxic work environment

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Toxic team environment, while some members are friendly and helpful others are not and much information withholding occurs. Management is unsupportive and works against staff rather than doing their job to support staff and nurses are working against each other. Very dysfunctional team environment. Very sad.

Pros

Good facility

Cons

Mean staff

Fun workplace

Residents and staff always having fun. Managers on site and staff are unionized and priveledged. Care is good but staff morale is horrible. Pay is good

Very poor leadership team!

This place is owned by the city of hamilton, therefore it is very top heavy. Lots of bosses making lots of money but not much support for the front line workers.Little to no appreciation or recognition for all the hard work being done at the bedside. It's an excellent place to live, but a very poor place to work. The Union (CUPE) does nothing to support frontline staff either.

Cons

One weekend off every 6 weeks for psws, dietary staff, nursing

Toxic workplace

Horrible management, no room for advancement, no educational opportunities, unsupportive work environment, critical thinking is suppressed rather than encouraged, toxic hierarchy between RNs and RPNs

Friendly Staff

I did my Pre-grad Placement at Macassa Lodge for Practical Nursing. Overall, it was a friendly environment, staff were welcoming, residents were very nice. Would recommend for practical students to take their Pre-grad Placement at Macassa Lodge.

great place to work

during my co-op I met great people, the workers are amazing, hardworking, determined, and fun. working there was a great experience. the hardest part of the job was the walking back and forth to get residents to where they needed to be. The most enjoyable parts of working there would be the staff, and the residents. I have learned so much from both.

Productive and friendly

Productive and chill workplace with a nice atmosphere and nice staff/people. Would recommend volunteering if you want to get a first step into the work place.

Pros

Cons

Hard to understand customers

Overall great place to work

My day at work would include cleaning meals on wheels bags, convention oven. Then I would help feed residents and after dinner i'd either help the residents back to their room or to the activity room. I would also help clean up dishes from the tables, wipe the tables and sweep the floors. Management is amazing for the most part. The hardest part of the job would be when one of the residents would pass away that you work with. The most enjoyable part of the job would be seeing the residents and having a relationship with them.

The management was absolutely horrific. They did not help you out at all. Not lenient on time table changes. Very bad hours with even worse staff. The job overall is really bad, do not recommend.

Great environment!

I loved being a co-op student at Macassa Lodge. I did the same tasks as a normal PSW would and I enjoyed it very much. Friendly staff and great residents!

Average working environment

The Personal Support Worker job requires hard work and this is true to Macassa Lodge also. Some organisational issues make the work harder than it should be.

Positive work environment

Volunteering at Macassa Lodge is very rewarding because I get to interact with the seniors and build a relationship with them. Most of their families live far away and are unable to visit them regularly, so it is very fulfilling knowing I am keeping them company and just basically attending to their social and emotional needs. The staff at Macassa are very warm and considerate, and they really take their time to attend to each resident, and so it has shown me that this is a place of work for someone who has traits like compassion, empathy, patience etc and it makes me happy that I have adapted to the environment because I possess these traits. Just being able to be part of the residents lives, making them happy and showing them that even though we are not related by blood, we consider them as our family and because of that we make it our main goal to provide them with the best services and activities, just to show them how much we care.

Excellent management and team work

Macassa Lodge has been a wonderful employer to work for. They have a variety of shifts to choose from that allow flexibility, and a great management team.

Good people that helped me any time I needed it.

It was a pretty straight forward, eight hour working day. I learned a little about elderly folks (like they seem to like being called "folks") Management was easy going and very helpful.

Pros

Quick walk to work

Cons

A lot of time spent working alone
