Low salary, low hours, no room for advancement

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
It's a job if you're a makeup artist and in need of an extra paycheck. There is no real management support, youre just a sales number. The favoritism is ridiculous, not to mention gossip and bullying. Their favor and your sales is what will get you to move up, even if you work hard and are an amazing makeup artist. The hours are ridiculously cut where you sometimes get 8-14 hour shift weeks. Its never consistent with hours unless you are a "part- time or full-time" permanent artist. There are rarely any full time opportunities and even if you are "full time" hours are cut down to 25-29.5 hours.. (.5 a literal joke). You can have a degree and often it's overlooked, they will still pay you low and you get no benefit out of it unless your sales are good. It's an okay job if you want to learn makeup application and interpersonal connection with customers, but you won't make enough to live.

Low pay, no benefits, lack of support

Not the same

I had worked for MAC for a few years, I had stopped and came back a couple times. Early 2000’s the pay was good and swag was awesome, then as the years went by you got less and less. You were no longer employed as full time but on call. No benefits no swag. Maximum 4 hour shifts.

Changed to save money, even their culture

Hands on Makeup Application but Huge focus on SALES

MAC has more training than other makeup retail places I know. However, the sales goal is competitive and could cause some disagreement and competition among artists. Some managers play favourites, micromanage, and could be unprofessional at times.

Makeup Samples, 30% discount for part timers, Hands on makeup application (not anymore due to the pandemic), cool coworkers

no work life balance, no benefits for part timers, discount for part timers is only 30% and for full timers is 60%, difficult to get full time/contract position, competition among coworkers, unprofessional managers

Lots of workplace politics and zero work/life balance

Stopped being fun. Hard to move up to a full-time position (it took me 3 years). The management could be self-serving, often forcing you to work through big life event (i.e. wedding and funerals) while granting themselves the weekend off.

Reasonable pay and benefits

No weekends off

Great company culture and employee training and benefits NO work life balance

Worked for MAC for four years was over-qualified for the position I was in but was unable to move up in the company due to politics, I was not as pretty as the other girls and I wasn't the managers favourite.
