Collaborative and Fun Place to Work

Featured review

Irving Shipbuilding selected this as a representative review
As a recent hire I have had a great experience onboarding with Irving. Management has been extremely personable, helpful, and involved with the process. In my short time working for Irving, I have already had the chance to collaborate with others and network extensively. The culture at Irving is exciting and inviting- best place to work in the Maritimes!

Pros

Collaborative Environment, Growth Opportunities, Valued Employees

Cons

Terrible

It’s not a bad place to work if you participate in the gossip with crew members and supervisors. It’s like elementary school and you can’t avoid it. Apply if you enjoy toxic environments.

Fair pay, terrible management, very unorganized

Great spot if your local to HRM and can block out the mismanagement, drama, negativity and unfairness. Fair pay, decent benefits, rrsp match (5%). 10/10 would not recommend relocating to this province just "for a job".Will be hanging tight until something better comes up.

Good place to work

No complaints really. Its like any other job. Has its problems but has many perks that out weigh them. Lots of room to improve yourself with internal career choices.

Decent job

A decent place to work and stay close to home . It has its problems like everywhere else .. it's what you make it . Show up, do your job and go home.

What future for ISI?

Employees are fired without notice every two weeks, the atmosphere is execrable, management powerless and unable to retain talent.

Cons

Dress code, no flexibility, no bonus, no evolution

Toxic Environment

ISI hires and promotes managers that don’t know how to manage people. The union makes everything more difficult. Supply chain is a revolving door. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Gets worse and worse by the day.

This went from being an amazing place to work to a major disappointment over the past several months. A new CEO came in and the changes became apparent very quick. Departments left short handed, external company reviewing our company’s structure and constant chatter of “changes are in the future”.Covid taught his we could work remotely with effectiveness. This also solved some key issues in the yard (office space and parking). Today a backwards step was taken by immediately stripping employees of the ability to work from home.Last week we found our our quarterly bonus was being slashed with effective immediately written all over it… coincidentally when said quarterly bonus was due and expected as part of our salary.Overtime is expected and noses are turned up when you submit to be paid for overtime (which means you worked 5 free hours for the company minimum as hours 40-45 are unpaid.)I wanted to spend my career working here, other Irving companies are not taking these drastic cuts.. just the shipyard. Hopefully I can step aside a different JDI company.

Pros

Working on a cool project. Shipbuilding is part of the JDIrving family

Cons

With immediate effect no more hybrid work ability, bonus slashed, Casual Friday’s slashed, Office location is up in the air, limited to no parking available

A place with so much potential ….

Where hopes and dreams of a better tomorrow come to die. If you are unskilled and hoping to be trained to be something better keep dreaming. The best way to control someone is to keep them scared and keep them stupid.

Stressful and Disorganized

Unclear expectations, vague job descriptions, high-stress with a lack of recognition. Coworkers were excellent but had high potential for toxic work environment.

Insanity

Good money... ok training if you're lucky. Lots of smoke n mirrors and silly games. Good people do work there but it was the most soul sucking and toxic place I've ever worked. Can be a hilarious place. Careful who you trust. It can be very detrimental to your mental health.

Unfair childish company

Working at Irving shipbuilding reminds me of a bad high-school experience, they treat you like a child and they hold grudges if you try to better yourself. They are selfish and not likely to help you out in any way. They are extremely political and the management is immature.

Pros

Lots of tools

Cons

Pretty much everything

Training only offered to management favorites

Regardless if you want to further your career professionally, if you want it to happen in this lifetime, you are better off to pay for yourself and if your not an engineer by trade, you are overlooked for salary increases despite your skills and background and/or promotions.

Pros

Christmas Party is descent!

Cons

High Turnover - More people leave than stay

Terrible place

The worst employer I have ever had. 80% of the Senior Management need to be replaced. The business needs to listen to its experts to be able to drive the business forward, Until this happens the old boys club will slow everything down.

A good place to work overall

The wages are as good as can be expected for the region. The worm was quite demanding at times but never a dull moment. Good team to work with. Great learning experience.

Good work for welders

I enjoy working here, but alot of coworkers don't. It's a union so alot of lazy and bad workers stay and make everyone else's job harder. If you can do your job without listening to all the whining then it's great, I like that I get to weld all day and work in interesting spots (tight spots haha). Some days are grueling, some days not.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

There are certainly pockets of good culture but when it solely depends on who you work for rather than a consistent culture of belonging and safety this may not be the ideal company for you.Working here is like being on a roller coaster! One minute things are going great and the next a situation occurred that leaves you scratching your head.

Pros

Some wonderful leadership

Cons

Terrible leaders who should not be still employed.

Great place to work, feels as though the company cares

Regular bonuses, helpful supervisors engaging management, good staff and manageable pace of work. The only downside is sometimes their seems like there's not enough equipment to go around. Other than that I've never worked at a better company.

Pros

Manageable time frames

Cons

Daily set ups

It's all about the wage.

The pay is what keeps people there because the environment you work in is toxic. The pay rate might be better than other places, but it is not nearly in line with living expenses.
