CEO is the perfect example of someone who suffers from the Napoleon complex. He is nothing more than a corporate shill to ensure shareholders are pleased. Has had no people leadership training, No ability to be in touch with the evolving needs of people and culture. Fails to inspire. No forward future mind set.

The company is the industry leader in profitability but nothing more.

Managers/leaders are devoid of soft skills. Almost formally coached to demean the efforts of the field. Nothing you do is ever good enough - if you are not favored.

There is a hierarchy that head office employees are a class above the field. They don’t respect reps to the point that at corporate events they host separate social events so they do not have to associate - (so much for inclusiveness).

Leaders and head office constantly frown upon what the field delivers.

Although none of them could execute to the expectation that they themselves set.

Strong existence of nepotism and favoritism. For career growth, delivering performance on KPIs are a small metric to success. It’s mostly superficial that’s based on appearance (physically), fashion, use of buzz words and sports metaphors, and showcasing small projects that have no lasting benefits to the business.

Salary is below industry standard.

The bonus structure is awful. You are based on achieving volume targets that are built by head office objectives (not market reality) and changes constantly to control payout factor to maintain budget.

-Company vehicle is inferior to competitors.

-Work life balance is non existent
 - more...
Pros
Company vehicle and pension matching.
Cons
No growth, pressure to deliver challenging targets, management

Highly stressful work culture. Promotions/advancement dependent on who you know and not skillset. Management made us work long hours. Provided a company phone so they can contact us at any time, including weekends and be asked to work. No work/life balance.

Not a good work atmosphere.

Since BAT took over operations they have micromanaged the business to the point its highly stressful and not focussed on the customers or retailers that brought them their earlier success.

There is zero corporate culture and they don’t care about individual employees or their families.

They do their best not to pay you the commission that they owe you. They aren't understanding and don't treat their employees well. More worried about their personal careers than helping you.

If you picture the tobacco industry as slimy manipulative and crude...you ain't missing much from their corporate side. They basically act the same way. Theres no real development, territory account reps get the brunt of things. They are connected to convience stores and gas bars, but most vendors dislike you and will find ways to give you a hard time. They have money (or had) and they have invested it in a lot of stupid things like their annual conference in Montreal or hiring a psychologist to analyze management trainees. Love to see a 22 year old, fresh out of college get checked on what spectrum they fall in. Useful? Not sure, but for ITCO, it seems to be. oo yea and lots of firing to get in with the times. Least there are some creative HR peeps/consultants out there who would glamorize their work/life culture
Pros
Discounted smokes, free car, gas
Cons
Everything else

During my time at ITCAN, the tobacco industry was stil thriving. Management and people are excellent. The only downside is the competitive culture and fear of the global organization.

Most enjoyable part is working with really world class people.

Least enjoyable is legal framework around commercial and financial operations.

Pros
Bonne paie, horaire flexible
Cons
Les tâches sont routinières et au téléphone

Employees are being over worked and under paid. Management makes weird decisions when comes time to promote employees. Most non-management employee are contractors and have no benefits whatsoever.

Overall job is good to gain experience with various softwares used within the industry (SAP mostly, and some excel). After a year or two, you should move on to something better.

Great if you are a part-time student or recent graduate.
Pros
free food, gym, on-site doctor
Cons
low salary, shady management decisions

Very disorganized place, I always had technical issues working as a customer service representative. People from the other departments are very lazy, lack of communication, they promise they will call back clients but they never do so.

Great people, slightly disorganized as far as management of the call center goes, otherwise very great company! Many meetings, operations are generally smooth. Great teamwork, whenever there was a problem the whole floor would help out to ensure productivity and make deadlines.
Pros
Friendly atmosphere
Cons
Little incentive for sales projects

a place where you will work with great people. However, if you are there on contract, your treatment will be significantly different than the rest of the company. Very unorganised, extremely poor communication between departments. It is a great place to learn things, especially how not to handle them.

This can be a good start for a freshman right out of school. However for a long-term career development and advancement this may not be the industry you want to be in. With the external pressures to the industry, the typical day of a salesman gets tougher by the day and the culture is very rigid and top down.
Pros
Good pay, car, medical and dental coverage etc
Cons
Incompetent management, less sensitive HR policies, field being kept completely away from the company

Negotiation, Stakeholder Management, Agency Relationship Management, Cost Effectiveness, Business Acumen, Prioritisation and Efficiency are few of many learnings throughout my career at Imperial Tobacco.
Great school to learn from with much opportunity to grow, although company is shrinking with many budget cuts and increased centralisation.

Engagement is low, culture and legacy is disappearing, budgets being slashed, leadership is weak but salary and benefits are high compared to the market although the gap is rapidly decreasing.
