Complex reporting hierarchies within Global business services team at IBM with expectations that weren't commensurate with ground realities. Once hired, as a consultant I was placed on a specific project for a finite time. The discrepancy between my salary and what IBM charged the end client as professional services fee was huge. The benefits of working as a consultant within GBS weren't that great - typical 2 week vacation with minimum health and dental benefits. IBM's coaching/employee review model was ridden with bureaucratic styled red tape - feedback on a consultant's performance was gathered from many bosses - Delivery manager, project manager, profile manager, team lead, and end client. This rendered the review process to be elaborate and ineffective - the model lacked the spirit and intent of coaching and feedback. Work assignments lacked collaboration, and employees were silo'ed into cubicles within sub-teams/teams/departments - an environment not conducive for teamwork.
The day with the client is always productive as it is. Every day, the client will contact us or we contact them for any issues. There, we develop a relationship with the client, where they are used to our types of calls or the issues which are the typical things talked about. The hardest part of the job is when the client is not very vocal about the way the job is being handled. The most enjoyable part of the job is when the client is very informative about our activities. But the most part is the professional culture between both companies.
I worked at IBM full-time for more than 2 years Pros Loads of information to learn and grow. Depends which wing one gets a job, work culture changes from one dept to the other.. generally, they do not micromanage. Expect employees to be responsible. Do not expect a good bonus. One can negotiate a good salary though. IBM GBS is the services wing and the work culture and over all atmosphere including bonuses depend on how. Cons Too process oriented and hence slow for innovation. Advice to Management Make processes leaner
My experience with IBM was mostly positive. The work environment was at the client site as I worked as It Specialist supporting Sears Canada! As Sears Canada had out sourced to IBM, there was a lot of turmoil and stress and most Sears staffed had left and the remaining staff plus new IBM staff were left to support Sears Systems. That in itself created stress. I find the training interesting and their facility at 3600 steeles intersting also
Its a good company to work for and they care of thier employees. There are lot of opportunity to move into different roles, if one does not like a role

Good Company to work with excellent training opportunities. Each day was an awesome day for me with tons of training and learning resources at my disposal. Good Management with an awesome workplace culture. I had the opportunity to work on both Oracle and SAP ERP applications which was the most enjoyable part of the job. I never felt anything hard about this job as it was my passion to work on these applications
I was part of a group that had been outsourced to IBM from a customer as part of a contract. From the very beginning it was clear that we would be giving a lot up. Our benefits weren't as good. Our ability to bill for overtime changed from time-and a-half to straight time, and then it was removed altogether. We would work overtime hours and BILL these hours to the customer (our former employer), but we would not be paid for this very same overtime. This does not make for a happy work environment. When IBM celebrated a major anniversary, there was a barbecue. Before our team could attend we received an e-mail telling us there wasn't any food left. If you are a contractor at IBM, be aware that they love to furlough contractors at short notice for weeks at a time.
No hope for advancement.
As the company works to reduce costs by laying off older employees, additional undocumented pressures are being put on remaining employees to do the tasks of the missing workers. New employees are not properly trained as the experience did not get passed on and tools/applications that are broken are not fixed or upgraded to be more efficient due to cost constraints.
