Emotionally rewarding but financially terrible

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
There is always support available and getting to see the difference you make in clients lives is so rewarding. Only 2 days of training is not enough and for a while you're just pretending you know what you're doing and hoping you dont mess up. Travel time is not paid so you end up spending a lot of your own money and time on transportation costs. Office says they do their best to reduce the amount of travel time and keep you in your part of the city but this doesn't happen

great communication with office, safe environment

You can chose your time and they will try to find clients that are really close to you. I had great communication, always felt that I'm part of a team and that they got my back

Excellent

Good staff and management. Nice place to work. Seniors are all good and friendly. Happy to be a caregiver with home instead for two years. Managers are great

Horrible place to work

We are not paid fairly for the hours and effort expected from us. They lie about the wage and will try to nickle and dime your pay down any chance they get. They say the pay rate is $23 per hour but then only gave $19.50 for working and any training done in the office was only paid at $16.75. They claim that they will pay milage but then deny to pay milage unless you work with multiple clients in the same day. There is no support or understanding from the staff. If you say no to 3 shifts a month they will fire you regardless of how many other shifts you have picked up. They have very unrealistic expectations of employees.

Pros

flexable schedule based on the avilability you give

Cons

unrealistic expectations

My clients are very nice, but is very low pay you not get what you want are worth and hard work

Not rewarded for your worth or value had a hard time getting things that you deserve and are entitled to. My clients are great. People never had any problems but it’s hard work and you jump from house to house for very little worth. Senior care you should be getting paid more than what you doing.

Pros

None

Cons

Hard work, and no rewards

Very bad place to work

I don't know how others have felt working in Home Instead Vancouver, but for me, working in the Vancouver location was the worst short period of my life. Poor management, the owner is still living in the 19th century micro-management, untrustworthy staff members and they ask people without a care-aide experience or license to cover care aide shifts when there is a staff shortage. They peek into our personal life and search our social media channels to check what we are doing and use it against us to let us go. Very high staff turnover and zero job satisfaction. I am not sad cos I left. I am so angry and feel bad because I did so much for the company that they just have to maintain for the next year. I shouldn't have worked my heart out.Highly not recommended. Thanks

Pros

Everything is fancy and good when you join

Cons

Everything is con about the franchise.

Home Instead is a great place to work for independent health field workers.

Typical day started with arriving at your client's location ans logging in before starting to work. Organizing and executing task needed as well as communicating with client. Once completed, logging out, and moving on to your next client. Forming a relationship with your client enables an easier work experience for both you and the client.I learnt that even though a task may be requested by may different clients, the same task is not applied the same. Each person is different with different routines, and require different attention in different areas. Nevertheless, the physical tasts remains the same.Managing my look loard and life came easy for me as I used my off times to complete my personal endeavors. The work culture was familiar as I had worked in the health field for numerous years prior to working at Home Instead. The independence you have over your job is amazing with the security of the team to assist.Hardest part of the job would be the remote areas we served in the winter. Going out at 5am to get to a client location for 6 am , and walking from the cold into a hot shower is a recipe for illness. Most enjoyable part was the freedom to detox after every client while you drive away to your next client. Using music therapy to relax and prepare for the next experience was most enjoyed. As you know....this is a hard job, but it does not have to hurt if applied correctly.

Pros

Choosing your schedule

Cons

Inability to choose clients

Rules and guidelines were always changing.unpaid travel mileage between clients homes.

Terrible Employer

Office staff are terrible to deal with, feel they are better than you. Treat you like you are worthless. Tend to bully you if you don’t agree to what they want. Threaten you constantly with your job, but half the time there isn’t any work. Suppose to be minimum three hour shifts but call you constantly for shorter shifts and give you attitude for not taking them. Training? What training, they train you for a max four hours in how to do care on people that you should be going to school for. No wonder they are constantly looking for staff, people quit as fast as they are hired. Wouldn’t recommend working for this company

Not Worth It Financially

The clients are lovely but the most common shifts are three hours and it usually would take me 30 minutes to drive there and drive back without getting any travel compensation.

The best part is meeting clients

It’s got good points and bad. I love the work and enjoy meeting and connecting with clients. The office is always there and supportive, unfortunately there are no benefits and you only get paid from client to client. If you have more than one client shift in a day then you’re spending your own time and money going between clients. It’s more like piece work for getting paid. I drive about 1-1.5 hours some days and it totals my workday hours to about7/8 but I will only get paid for 6. So if you want more money you have to work almost every day and pay your own way between clients.

Pros

Flexible scheduling

Cons

No benefits and you don’t get paid to travel between jobs.

Very supportive office staff.

Show up and love up your clients (elders) and the office staff will give all the support and respect you could ever need. I’ve moved to the east coast or I’d still be working for Home Instead. I loved this job. It’s all about making people feel safe and happy.

Pros

Very flexible hours- great staff-

Cons

Pay

Great learning experience

Ive never worked homecare before, so it was a great experience getting my feet wet into this industry. The hours werent bad, and they tried their best to accommodate with my schedule.

Do not take care of their employees

Doesn’t pay enough for the amount of work you do, schedulers favourite certain clients, two days of training, more needed. Needs to be more training on safety of showering, dealing with family members of clients. The answer for everything is call the office. Bit of a copout.

Good workplace and not enough hours available

A great company, they are reliable and provide 24/7 support to employees. Lots of shift availability too and they are really flexible with your schedule and hours.Unfortunately, they provide few hours of work, less than 10 hours a week, and the shifts are not consistent. Even if you communicate your availability, they constantly call to offer extra shifts. They should say in the interview that they are On call.

Part time job

It’s a good part time job for someone wanting to get out of the house, and/find some purpose. Sometimeshard to get full time hours without driving all over the city for different clients using your own gas money and car.

Fun ,productive and uplifting

I work with the Brampton office and I can't say anything bad about the group there, after 5yrs I feel like family and sometimes get treated as such. If you are looking for a job in the field and with this office you get bonus love from the office and the people you're working with.

Pros

Choose your hours
