Your coworkers will be your failsafe. Holt Renfrew, at store level, does not progress your career as it advertises. Terrible management at Yorkdale, Very engrained in "Workplace politics".

HR is a good company with all great benefits. But working there, you would have a lot of pressure. The sales goal is high, especially if you are new in this field. Overall, it is good experience.

A typical work day involves finding which manager would be around and briefing the duties of the day. Are there any VIP guests? Special events? Issues? Feature sales specials? A thorough setup is conducted by opening staff, and the remaining floor staff arrive to set up their sections, check reservationsand prepare the cash and computer system for service. The culture of the Workplace is fast and furious for a continuous 8 hours in the busy fall and winter seasons and then typically light and even paced during the warmer months. The hardest part of the job is the sheer pace of activity involved to fully look over all the duties of a section, maintaining turnover and providing high quality service Most enjoyable is the service time during the day because it leaves evenings open and free for personal use. Also, the employee package and benefits provided are of good quality.

My experience at Holt Renfrew was good. The compensation could improve The OTB process is a bit strict in trying to drive and build a business considering the competition The approval process can be cumbersome in getting things done.

Holt Renfrew is a great place to work at. It is young and dynamic, the benefits are good (RRSP match after a year and health benefits). The bonus could be hit or miss, the executive team will have outrageous bonus and employees will have crumbs, the difference is ridiculous. There is opportunity for growth or to move around, but there is some pressure (which is normal) to achieve numbers and stay within budget. People working there are all about fashion so if you are like that you will like t he discount

Overall fun workplace to be at as everyone is very friendly and willing to help. Always room for growth but the pay wave is very bad as it is not compensated well for back of house employees.

Over all, Holts is a great company to work for. A true Canadian luxury house! Even with latest competition from US, Holts still stand strong as the only luxury department store in Canada. What is pro can be a con at the same time, Holt is true Canadian, which means the whole executive team remain all caucasian including head quarter as well as all stores. I would prefer to think it's culture difference instead of racist, but after all these years, it's hard to only look at positive side.

- A typical work day consists of selling, cross selling, learning about skincare, cosmetics and fragrance. - Learned about the clientele and products sold at HR. - Constant pressure of highly unachievable sales goals. - No training provided. Employees are expected to know how to operate in the store without proper training. - Negative work environment - Poor management. High turn over rate with new managers every year. Managers show favouritism to some employees. Employees who do not achieve their sales goals are treated differently. - Corrupt and biased Human Resources. Only there to protect management. Does not listen to concerns from staff. - No job security. - No culture I have never worked in such a negative and toxic work environment in my life. I truly hope someone reads these reviews and changes are made so future staff can have a safe and positive work environment and experience growth.

When I was there it was good now I heard they have now changed it to commission based pay which I am sure it made the work climate very tense. They used to do base pay plus commission.

BOH is nice enough, always friendly and approachable team. FOH can be decent but a little cliquey. Some really grouchy staff. FOH and BOH management plays favorites, openly disparage managers and staff in front of you. Makes it awkward and hard to trust that you are being treated well given this type of behaviour. Chef is known to verbally abuse staff. Has 'good days' and 'bad days' which dictate how carefully the staff should engage with him and which rules will and will not be enforced. This is understood amongst everyone. As a new hire, I was warned to keep a distance and to 'be careful' with the chef. In my opinion, a bad temper is not a substitute for a personality, nor is it 'just a thing that chef's have.' Really uncomfortable environment for bipoc. Staff does not reflect the city that we live in.
