Working for the board comes with a lot of the challenges you would see in other industries, it just comes off differently. Admin can be hit and miss when things are going wrong, if you are casual and don't have the union to lean on it can be extremely challenging. But the work is so rewarding at the end of the day. Working with the children makes each day unique. Never a dull moment.

Think Twice

If you have respect and integrity for yourself and for others look elsewhere. Management at the Board office have mostly been grandfathered into their roles. Nepotism is huge. Starts at the top.

worked in library with others but individually

Started day at beginning of school time and was consistently working tutoring 14-15 children a day. It was fast paced and a little stressful. It went well overall. I enjoyed the small group work and helping others.

Teaching

I really loved my job as a teacher. My favourite grade was grade one because they was the grade where you saw the most growth. I always kept current and tried to make each school year for both myself and my students.

Challenging, yet rewarding job

Great to work with students and staff in a dynamic, but challenging environment. Able to partner with various professionals; social worker, speech and language, behaviour therapists and community partners like Lynwood Charlton to provide best support for students.

Pros

weekends, holidays and summers off, benefits

Cons

can be physically and emotionally demanding

Fun, engaging, a great learning experience.

A typical day at work would be preparing the classroom, Supervision of students, toileting and assisting Special Needs Children with school work and dressing. In my position as a EA, I have learned that Special Needs children need instruction to be broken down in small tasks. If given many tasks at one given time they will be unable to process those tasks, and become flustered. If the children are distracted, it is important to use visual cues and to be creative. Positive encouragement is vital in their learning. The workplace culture for me depends on how my relationship is with the staff. If they are welcoming, understanding and supportive, my job performance, and my disability, my mindset will be positive and I will want to push myself to do more. I will do my best to ask questions on how I can improve myself. This makes a big difference in how staff and I can work together. I try not to let it bother me. The hardest part of the job has been gaining full time employment. I believe my disability has been a factor in this process. My disability does not define who I am. I am capable of anything, even if it will take me longer to complete a task. I will follow through with a task until it is completed 100%. I am determined to be successful, and I will! The most enjoyable part of the job for me is how rewarding it is to wake up each day knowing that I am making a difference in the children's lives, whether it is a smile, a high five, a picture any simple gesture. When my kids are grown, I dream they will see me and remember "That was my teacher and because of her I am -

I love teaching and helping young children grow to their potential.

Ii have been teaching for 28 years and can retire this spring. I am interested in part time work. Working in a Catholic environment allows me to proclaim my faith and I still Catholic values.

Productive place to work.

This school board is a good employer to work for and it is well managed. My colleagues especially the other ocasional teachers are very helpful. The most enjoyable part of the job is interacting with the students and seeing them move forward as they learn. Meanwhile the hardest part of the job is dealing with students who do not want to learn and cause problems in class. My overall experience has been positive and I have learned a great deal about people, teaching and learning.

Pros

relative freedom in performing my job

Cons

Great place to work

I was a seasonal summer student employee. It was tough work but a good place to work. The only downside was that it was only June to August.
