Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedGrand Erie is understaffed in almost all areas except for management. Days of being 20 positions short are the normal day to day operations. Schools are very old and showing there age

Productive
Full time Educational Assistant (Current Employee) - Brantford, ON - 16 April 2023
I would recommend others to apply. We definitely need more Education Assistants in the board. It's a great reward to know you are making a difference in one little ones life st a time we work sometimes 1 on 1 and sometimes in several classes or groups. Always got to be ready when called cause someone needs assistance.
Pros
Supporting staff especially primary teachers and DECEs
Cons
Not enough EAs for high numbers of students who need support

Without a doubt, this is probably the best place I’ve ever worked in my 30 year employment history.
Graphic Designer (Current Employee) - Brantford, ON - 19 May 2022
The work is diverse and interesting, the staff is passionate and focused, and you often get a firm sense of accomplishment from project completion. The benefits package is pretty great, the pension is one of the best in Canada and the pay rate is above average. Management is eager to learn, open to ideas and friendly. Senior management are ego-free and approachable. The Director is driven, personable and accepting of fresh ideas. This is not a place for people looking for a lazy, menial, nothing-job. With 72 schools and six education centres within Grand Erie’s umbrella large projects come thick and fast, so you’ll definitely need to be prepared to work hard, think on your feet and be challenged. But, for me, the work is almost always fun and rewarding. As horrifying as this sounds, sometimes I actually look forward to Monday morning after a long, boring weekend…
Pros
Flexible working environment, staff who actually care about your well-being, permanent work-from-home options, updated technology and tools, openness to self-improvement goals, monthly one-on-one sessions, great benefits, above average remuneration
Cons
The workload can be overwhelming if you don’t plan effectively, the constant barrage of surprise projects can lead to frustration, for some positions there isn’t always a clear path for organizational advancement

Undervalued, Underpaid, NO Job Descriptions
Elementary School Office Coordinator/Clerical (Current Employee) - Brantford, ON - 9 November 2021
Clerical staff have no job descriptions. There is no pay scale based on employment experience, duties or level of responsibilities. No incentives for promotion from within. Very little training. No adequate clerical support. Three unpaid layoffs a year. This affects retirement packages and eligibility dates.
Pros
School Hours & Summers off.
Cons
Unpaid Layoffs

Guaranteed paycheck/ amazing benefits
Custodian/Caretaker (Former Employee) - Brant, haldimond, norfolk counties - 22 April 2021
Guaranteed paycheck every week, amazing benefits, management was always available to answer any questions or emergencies you had. When you do a good job you are noticed and appreciated. Hardly see the managers whatever shift you are on, unless you are not doing your job or you called them for something. Great people to work with. Will miss working here and will miss the relationships I built here.
Pros
Benefits, very well managed, staff is great
Cons
Pay could be better

Very disappointed
Payroll Clerk (Former Employee) - Brantford, ON - 15 June 2020
Very disappointed with the school board.
Had high hopes for them.
I was made to feel like I was incompetent and very stupid. I was not treated as a equal and very unfairly. Even took their recommendations on how to improve and did them but still was not good enough.
Not a very good place to work unless you want to feel like that.

Large impersonal school board
Educational Assistant (Current Employee) - Haldimand County, ON - 29 April 2020
Very large board with lots of employees therefore communication is terrible.
Ancient hierarchy of have and have not, is terrible.
The board values documents instead of people.
Pros
Working with children
Cons
Too large

Great co-workers
Secretary (Current Employee) - Brantford, ON - 12 April 2020
I am a school secretary. You start out as a casual secretary. 95% of training is on the job. A great group of secretaries that help each other out. I like that permanent jobs are decided based on seniority. Some senior management team members don't give secretaries the respect they deserve. As a school secretary you are usually the first person in and the last person gone at the end of the day. The job includes much more than taking attendance and answering phones. All in all it is a good experience.

Fun place to work
Camp Counsellor (Former Employee) - Brantford, ON - 4 February 2020
I enjoyed working within the Grand Erie District School Board by being a camp counsellor. All the staff were great to work with and it was a nice environment.

Very political
School Secretary (On-call/Casual) (Former Employee) - Brantford, ON - 22 October 2019
If you are looking for a job free from political drama, this is NOT the place for you. However, if you don't mind all that and want a good wage and benefits then this is a great organization.
The teachers/EAs were never happy with their circumstances so they do a lot of complaining on the job. I always thought school were about the children but apparently I was wrong. ;)
If you wanted to apply for a new position you were hired based on years worked, not your skill set. This can be very demoralizing.
But if you work the hours, keep your mouth shut, work hard and make a good impression you will go far. It may take a few years but it will pay off in the end.

Its an ok place to work
Casual Educational Assistant (Former Employee) - Brantford, ON - 23 June 2019
I was supply, and had been doing it for 7 years. I did not get contract. Its good for training, but not good for trying to get a contract. I feel like EAs should have more contracts.

A challenging and mentally demanding position
Lead Educational Assistant (Current Employee) - Haldimand County, Norfolk and Brant County - 15 November 2018
The job can be very challenging at times as the role of the EA has changed drastically over the past ten years. Helping people to understand this can be very difficult, but that is what drove me to work harder and teach the EA's throughout the board the skills and strategies they would need to support our most unique individuals. I for one am passionate about children with behaviour needs and therefore I loved my job.
