GHD Peterborough is a well managed office with helpful - likable employees. Many departments seem to pay well however materials testing is not an ideal department to be in. While the job requires a college education it pays poorly and is very physically demanding, especially at the entry level junior technician job. This job should either be given to non-college grads as the education is not necessary for the tasks required, or the salary should be dramatically increased to make it worth while for college graduates to take this job. I would certainly consider working at GHD again however it would be in the Hydro-geology or Geo-technical departments rather than materials testing.

Toxic Work Environment

Environmental Scientist (Current Employee) - Toronto, ON - 13 June 2023

A typical day at work involves not knowing what your'e doing at all until the morning of the work day. Some days there is no work and unpaid time must be taken to make up the 40 hour work week. Management does not care about you and mistreats employees with bullying and harassment. The workplace is mismanaged and perpetuates a constant toxic workplace with no work/life balance and no morale. This job is very demanding for low pay and no chance of promotion. The benefits are terrible. The only good part of the job is the relationship with fellow grunts. At this company it is a dead end and they will work you to death.

Open concept and "fun"

Technician (Current Employee) - Waterloo, ON - 25 October 2019

PROS It's a lot nicer office than most you'll come by. An automatic coffee machine with 8+ varieties of coffee including multiple Starbucks (not as good as the real stuff). They are big on Wellness so the Waterloo office has fresh fruit everywhere (apples/bananas/oranges), a gym with free classes, and a great benefits package for wellness. Rest of the benefits are pretty darn decent - unlimited sick days, 2 weeks vacation (3 once you hit a year), wellness benefit (up to $250). Parental leave they don't cover anything past what the government gives you (55% of pay). Depending on the position (hourly vs salary) you can get paid OT. They have tons of events and lunches in the summer. Generally great atmosphere of people. Nice location, close to a Tims and a bunch of small business lunches. Desks are adjustable height and you can request ergonomic equipment. Very accessible building for those who need it. CONS Advancement is tough. You'll bust yourself but the PM or your manager will just take the credit pretty well. They are super competitive and all the PMs are ruthless. Not nice people. They take up all the budget and don't keep track of the budget so they will just put your hours to overhead without telling you so your billable hours are lowers and so you don't get a raise or are given a "talking to" in your performance review. It's true that most of the PMs have their position because they're friends with other PMs or their parent is one. There are multiple PMs or Principals who have gotten their children jobs here, some barely have the credentials and are already being -

Productive fun place to work with table tennis

Great place to work but unfortunately contract ended. If there is a job heaven this was it. Snacks and fresh fruit provided daily encouraging healthy eating. FRESH GROUND COFFEE/TEA LEAVES 10 varieties ALL FRESH Bring a lunch and warm up in one of the mini kitchenettes or order a meal from the kitchen. The LRT stops at back door but there are bicycle racks indoors for the bike enthusiast

unqualified management including project mangers. Social activities strongly encouraged. Lots of emphasis on BBQ and free snacks. Not much technical time spent on projects. Project management wastes a lot of the budget and very little chargeable engineering hours for technical aspects. Principals say one thing and do another. Wannabe engineering company.

Very low pay, Zero appreciation for jr staff members, no sense of social or team atmosphere

I worked for GHD for a little over 2 years. There is little to no recognition for going above and beyond the very mundane tasks given to jr staff. Because of this, advancement within the company feels unlikely. There is extremely little to no interaction with upper level managment, resulting in employees feeling secluded and under appreciated. The workplace environment would be ideal for someone who enjoys working independently while being around other people. My time at the Missassuaga, Ontario Office was overwhelmingly difficult due to the constant language barriers. My direct superiors didnt know my name and called me the wrong name for the first 3 months. It was very difficult to have pride in your work and show pride of ownership in this atmosphere. The entire lab space was consistently a mess and unsafe; a result of poor management and zero sense of ownership and pride felt among staff. I do not recommend this company to anyone. My experience led me to leave industry.

Great for Starting or Finishing a Career

Starting a career is great with GHD as there are many opportunities in a variety of fields. The same goes to finishing a career as you will have opportunities to own shares in the company. The worst place to be is mid career as it's very difficult to move up without basically killing yourself and having no life outside of work. Work/life balance is terrible in the company and raises, most years, are max 3% but on average ~1%.
