Long hours, low income
Plant helper (Former Employee) –  North York, ON1 September 2019
Long hours to work , when you need help it's kind of hard to receive it, everyone has there own task to do. A work area called liquid box hurts your shoulders and wrist. People go on different break timing. The pay isnt the best. The benefits are good.

Awesome place to work honestly.
General Labourer (Current Employee) –  Teeswater, ON13 July 2019
I worked as a ghee processor when I first started at gay lea. And it took some getting used to but I grew to love the job honestly. Now I am working in a different area. And although it’s not my favourite overall the job is pretty good. And I like my colleagues for the most part they are all pretty good people.
Pros
Great people.
Cons
A little spontaneous.

As a company they are quite well put together
General Labourer (Former Employee) –  Salerno Dairy, Hamilton, ON7 June 2019
Disclaimer: I worked at the Gay Lea Foods Salerno Dairy, Hamilton, ON, Canada; I cannot speak for any other locations except in very general terms.

Typical day: Depending on which location under the Gay Lea Foods umbrella you find yourself working at,and what shift you are working, you will have a very different experience day-to-day. Different plants have different amenities and different machinery with different maintenance schedules and requirements. In the plants with mainly human labour and little automation, day-shift workers will find themselves in a buzzing environment where the main task will be to get a large variety of tasks done without running each other over; whereas the night shift workers find themselves in a slightly more strenuous and somber environment where they need to get a larger volume of fewer tasks completed before the day-shift comes in.

Management: Management is typically very friendly but stern, as is needed in an environment where mistakes can injure many people both amongst the staff and the consumer market.

Workplace culture: Culturally, the workplace is rather relaxed, everyone more or less wanting to get the job done to the best of their abilities.

Hardest part: The hardest part of the job would have to be trying to pace yourself correctly as to not burn out.

Enjoyable part: The most enjoyable part of the job depends of the shift you are working; in day shift it would be learning how to function as a team to such a degree that the job takes moments to complete, whereas in night shift it would be getting a large order done as fast

Pros
Two breaks at appointed times to aid in prevention of employee burn-out.
Cons
Easy to burn-out if you don't pace yourself.

Great Company to work for
Truck Driver - Class 1 (Current Employee) –  Teeswater, ON11 May 2019
Great company to work at. Some shifts change but it can be expected for a dairy processing facility.
There is room for advancement as well. The dispatch does what they can to accomodate time off.

A poorly run organization with no respect for their employees. The Operations Manager sits in his office watching camera monitors to spy on employees.

Forklift Operator (Former Employee) –  Hamilton, ON3 October 2017
Great place to stand around and do minimal work as the leadhand and supervisor are self absorbed with there own lives.Hourly wage isn't competitive enough and with only a 19 cents as a raise wasn't enough to stay after that
Pros
Extra long breaks
Cons
Bad management

Professional work environment
QA Technician (Former Employee) –  Guelph, ON22 March 2017
At my plant workers were generally happy and unionised. Work environment was very comfortable. Very professional and clean with kind staff and work ethic. Staff feel empowered and respected. Numerous fun theme days and fundraisers throughout the year keep things interesting. Individuals are respectful but fun to work with. If you're in the union you're paid much better than non-union workers.
Pros
Free gourmet coffee machine, great work environment, generally happy staff who are pleasant to wok with, theme days and lunches to celebrate
Cons
Depending on department it's hard to move up, non-unionized pay, retirement plan no longer available.
