Co-workers get you through
Security Guard (Full Time) (Former Employee) –  London, ON12 November 2018
Management has no regard for labor laws or employee compassion. Ask for a day off months in advance and they always say no, force you to use vacation days.
Always asking for proof of days off called in (bereavement, sick, emergency, personal)
Company is a joke. Management talks behind your back. Union does nothing for you, absolutely nothing.
Co-workers were the only reason I kept going to work.
Ask for new uniforms, they take 7 months to get you any.
Terrible company. Promise raises, never happened.
G4S wonders why they can't hire or keep employees, maybe you should realize how terrible you treat people.
Pros
co-workers
Cons
everything, mainly management

Decent pay but an unbalanced/unfair scheduling system
Screening Officer (Current Employee) –  Richmond, BC22 September 2018
The training is just about adequate. there's a lot to learn & remember at first, but the flow comes with time.
The job itself is ok & it pays well for what you do, but the work/life balance and schedule flexibility is very bad. Like all companies, everyone respects the seniority of other employees, but G4S (under contract from Catsa) operate a totally unbalanced & unfair scheduling system.

Employees should not expect a shift including a single Sat OR Sun off for many years and the same for booking a vacation week during the peak seasons of summer and the holidays. Shift modifications & leave of absences are also seldom accommodated for all but the most extreme circumstances.
Sure, they have a shift giveaway/trade system, but it's old-school archaic, slow and getting someone to work a weekend shift is practically impossible.
There is no accommodation for students and people with other jobs, the company will expect you to put them before all else in life.

The union appears to focus on protecting the feelings of the more senior employees.

Immediate management are mostly friendly & try their best to help you out, but can only work within the parameters they have.
Pros
Pay, benefits, a mostly friendly work environment
Cons
Shift and vacation scheduling, An inefficient union

Its seems to be going well i just hope i can grab hours very soon
Security Guard (Current Employee) –  Sudbury, ON4 June 2018
I just started working here I like it a lot but I've been reading some of the reviews here and I hope that this low hours thing does not happen to me as I need to work. I need the money badly and something to keep me busy so I'm not stuck at home all the time. Now what people are saying about the wages being low all I have to say is just be happy your getting money at all and the long hrs is what a guard is for. If you all thought there was only going to be 6-8 hour shifts you picked the wrong line of work. But any ways here is to a good career with G4S thank you guys for welcoming me a board.
Pros
Good people, pay is good, benefits
Cons
Not enough contracts.

Don’t apply if u want a life! Not the best job for stufents or for ppl who wanna work part-time!
Ex employee (Former Employee) –  Yvr17 September 2018
Its an interesting job u meet so many new ppl. You make new friends. The pay isn’t too bad but i do feel like the company should pay their employees more due to the stressful environment. The service delivery managers are awesome!!! the ppl up at the office don’t care about anyone or anything. Your attendance is tracked on a whole new level. If u need time off it’s literally impossible!! Doesn’t matter if family/friend/ or u is getting married, if u have medical reasons or even if u have an all paid vacation u still have to struggle getting time off, most times you’ll be denied!!!! This company has the worst Scheduling ever!! They stalk ur profiles on social media and nail u when u call in sick.
Pros
Make New friends, ok benefits.. tims has better benefits
Cons
Scheduling, no appreciation

Pad your resume and get out
Service Delivery Manager (Former Employee) –  Richmond, BC3 July 2018
Crazy culture where they are constantly changing the goals. Zero support for middle managers. Basically disposable employees as there is constant turnover in all departments. The union is strong and the brains of the operation. The company bows to the union and will sacrifice their young (managers) instead of fixing issues.
Pros
Resume builder
Cons
Zero job security

You do not go no anywhere
Guard (Former Employee) –  edmonton, walmart31 January 2018
May be big company and this is why some mistakes go unchecked. This company is greedy, no management skills to run it. They can change your wage any time they want. Management Never checks with employees about their sudden rash of judgements. Other people mistakes may land on your page and you may be dismissed without knowing why. This company like wagon that runs on three wheels that runs only on a flat road. If the guard spends hundred years working for G4S he will never be noticed or rewarded or actually getting pay raises (may get pay cut). bad work culture. Over all, not good company to work for.
Pros
you are invesible, do what you want
Cons
same pay for 15 years

It's okay
Screening Officer (Former Employee) –  Richmond, BC17 July 2018
I really enjoyed working here the first year, then I don't know what happened in management but it went down hill very fast. Scheduling makes this job extremely stressful, to get a day off you pretty much need someone on their death bed before they will give you a day off. You need to be here minium 5 years to MAYBE just MAYBE get a Saturday or Sunday off. They also implemented some tracking devices you need to punch in where you are going so they monitor your every movement even if you go to the washroom. Flexibility used to be fantastic till G4s decided they didn't like the shift give aways and made everyone take full time lines so no one can give away. You will also get in trouble for give away shifts even though it Is our right and in the union hand book

They are very behind the times everything is still done by paper and pen.

If you speak French you will get very bad shifts as they have different bidding lines (shifts) for them. People who have been here 5+ year who are French still get terrible shifts. They get shifts as if they just started.

Students will be screwed over, you will definitely not get a part time line (shift). They do not accommodate students. In fack they accommodate no one.

There is room for advancement into management but I suggest you be very good as a screening officer and make sure everyone upstairs likes you, do as they say and raise no questions.

You are not a Human being to the people upstairs in that office all you are is a number, they don't care about your life outside of work, and its extremely sad.

Terrible place to work
Screening Officer (Former Employee) –  Richmond, BC9 August 2018
Been working with G4S for over 2 years at YVR Airport and I absolutely HATED it. Management and Scheduling don't care about you. They treat you like dirt. You want to modify a shift or take a day off? Forget about it. They won't ever approve it even if your dying from cancer.

They've started to doggy tag everyone, tracking everyones moves. CAN I NOT USE THE WASHROOM IN PEACE?

They hire complete idiots, everyone is two faced and A LOT OF DRAMA GOES DOWN. Everyone sleeps around with each other just to make it to the top. You have managers AND coworkers sexually harassing the females. You have everyone spreading rumours about each other and what does management do? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. They don't care about anyone or the health of their employees

Decent job
Security Guard (Current Employee) –  Toronto, ON24 October 2018
Very unorganized company. Pay is decent but thats probably due to the union that you're automatically in. Mind numbing work. No ability to progress within the company. Waste of time if you're serious about a career in security. Just a job, nothing else. Co-workers are professional but the job is similar to working for an agency. If you need money badly I'd say go for it but if you're looking to learn things and gain relevant experience its probably not in your best interest to work for G4S. All in all a decent job.
Pros
Consistent hours.

Pre-Board Security Screening Officer at YXS (Former Employee) –  Prince George, BC11 October 2018
It was an exciting job opportunity working at the airport, interacting with the passengers and knowing what you are doing is so very important in ensuring the safety of everyone, not only in the air, but also on the ground. It could really be a great company to work for if there wasn't so much back biting going on in the work place.

G4S is a relatively new company on the air security market and they care more about their profit then their employees. Team is great, that helps to go trough the daily stress load, demands from management are high but the salary is average.

Camp security
camp guard (Former Employee) –  Fort McMurray, AB14 May 2018
Worked 3 rotations in a camp setting with this employer.
The group of guards I worked with were cliquish and if they didn't like you made sure you didn't last.

The work environments in the camp were gossipy and childish. There is 0 support from management.

The camp guards are treated like "mall cops" from the shift OC all the way up to the head of camp security.

The staff were nervous about losing the contract to a competitor so were telling the gate guards to include useless info in their log book in order to give the appearance of being busy.

Management and staff are very insecure individuals.

Pay was decent but one could get a labourer position with another camp employer and fair just as well or better
Pros
2 week rotations
Cons
rules for the sake of rules, a childish, gossipy environment
