Amazing organization, culture and support

Featured review

FunctionAbility Rehabilitation Services selected this as a representative review
I love working at FunctionAbility. There is a strong culture of support and striving for excellence. I feel proud to be part of this group that highly values education and best practices and is even accredited. I love the education days they run, and all the resources offered. The industry and processes are challenging and there is a huge diversity in client presentations - this can be overwhelming at first but is an amazing learning opportunity and there is tons of support from management and from colleagues. Everyone helps each other out. There is even funding to go out once per month with your colleagues. There is lots of flexibility in terms of scheduling and caseload, but you also have to be responsible for managing your time and keeping things balanced for yourself. This is also a learning curve, but well worth it! And the yoga retreat in June was the best!! I wouldn't work for any other company in this industry - FunctionAbility stands out above and beyond the rest.

Pros

support, education, tons of opportunity for learning and growth, connections with colleagues

Supportive, flexible, great co-workers but could improve

As a Rehab Assistant you have flexibility with your schedule plus little micromanaging. You have to be ok with working on your own in the community. Great co-workers! Met some really great people. If you cannot work independently, this is not the job for you. Also, your pay is dependent on your caseload/number of clients you see/hours you work. You will have highs and lows, so be prepared for that.

Pros

Flexible schedule to fit your life

Cons

Pay is dependent on hours worked, can have low paying months

Great balance of profressional autonomy and support

Solid company organization with management team that is both proactive and responsive, accountable. I have confidence in the leadership and feel trusted/respected as well.

Awesome work culture

I used to work at FunctionAbility as an OT. Loved it. You can choose a client population to focus on (mental health, paediatrics, acquired brain injury, orthopaedic injuries) and you will get referrals mainly for that group. There was a lot of report-writing (long reports) where you'd use your previous reports as a loose template/guide - I found this relaxing and interesting - a nice break from direct client care. My colleagues were great - the rehab clinicians, the administrative team, management, supervisors.

Pros

Supportive management, intersting work, lots of variety in clients.

Cons

Some client work tasks were unpaid because the insurance company would not be reimbursing.

Focus on the bottom line, power dynamic issues , non- supportive.

What is the best part of working at the company?Make your own schedule. If you have a full caseload the pay is good. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Despite the “family vibe” there is a lack of clinical support and guidance. Supervisor lacked flexibility and expected you to struggle (and cry) alone, for the first 6 months- at least What is the work environment and culture like at the company? They try to facilitate a social environment and offer mental health funds but these aren’t available the first few months- when you’re struggling the most.

Supportive culture with growth mindset

FunctionAbility is a hightly supportive workplace. It starts right from orientation processes to support from supervisory staff, provision of growth opportunities for clinicians, and opportunities for leadership roles within the company. They value collaboration and community and provide many opportunities to engage with colleagues on a professional and casual basis. The work available is a diverse caseload allowing you to build your clinical skills.

Supportive workplace with prioritization of clinician flexibility/autonomy and a diverse community caseload with incredible clientele

FunctionAbility is truly a fantastic place to work! Having come from working in the hospital, I felt very used to being treated as just another number/employee, but coming into this company really opened my eyes to how much some companies genuinely care for every single one of their employees no matter what. I have been shown incredible training and continued support by all managers since joining the company, and have even gotten to learn from one of the owners herself, which was such a treat. The SLP supervisor and Ottawa regional director are both such genuine individuals, and I can really get along with both of them on a personal level, beyond just the scope of work itself. I thought that it may be harder to be in a community role when I first started, because you do not get to really share a common workspace with other clinicians regularly, but somehow, we are all still so connected to one another, and FunctionAbility puts such an effort to ensure that is the case by funding monthly meetups for fun, as well as different events in the office. I love each and every single one of my colleagues so much, and they all have a special place in my heart. The client work that we do here is also so meaningful, and the clients we see for the most part are really great, and so appreciative of us coming into the home and being able to help them with functional daily activities. You can really feel and see a difference that you can make with these clients, and that is one of the most gratifying things, plus being able to build those long-term relationships is just invaluable. I am so grateful -

Pros

Flexibility/autonomy of scheduling, incredible clientele, great management support, salary for first 3 months of orientation, comprehensive training program

Cons

You get paid for what you bill vs. salary which can sometimes be a hard adjustment, hours can fluctuate from week to week, no included benefits (you can pay to enter into the program), no EI top-up for maternity leave, no pension plan

Great place to work with attention to detail

I am so happy with my choice to work at FunctionAbility. Management truly listens to staff feedback and works to improve things all the time. The work is different from my previous environment. There is actual clinical freedom to be creative with my clients.

Not very ethical

Would not recommend working for them. They had poor ethical standards and pressured staff to make inappropriate recommendations and misrepresent assessment findings.

Official response from FunctionAbility Rehabilitation Services

23 March 2022
This was very upsetting to read. FunctionAbility has many processes, systems and oversight to ensure that we provide a high level of client care while following various legislative requirements and the many college requirements. We do want to reiterate that we are an Accredited company that holds high organizational standards.

Dynamic and Collaborative Workplace!

Community-based work that is dynamic, flexible and demands a high level of organization, planning and self-discipline. FunctionAbility is successful at offering the tools and resources which enable clinicians to collaborate effectively, share resources and feel supported. These factors also enable clinicians to provide consistent and high quality services. Equal emphasis is placed on caring for employees (promoting work-life balance and self-care) as well as on providing high end, consistent, reliable and client-centred care for persons throughout all stages of recovery. From an SLP perspective, the SLP Director has been successful over the past 8+ years at teaching, guiding, providing encouragement, advocating for and offering constructive feedback to clinicians. Other members of the FunctionAbility administrative and leadership team are also consistently responsive, approachable, patient and helpful at guiding clinicians through navigating many aspects of the Motor Vehicle Insurance industry.

Strong Clinical and Supportive Environment

I have been working at FunctionAbility for over 10 years. I have never worked anywhere that is so supportive and sees you as a person and not just an employee. I feel confident that the office staff, supervisors, and my colleagues are my safety net and have my back. There is constant sharing of ideas and resources to keep my treatment functional and evidence based. My fellow SLPs inspire me constantly. FunctionAbility is a fantastic place to work!

A collaborative community practice!

The FA culture is that of a wide-reaching supportive family! Despite clinicians working independently in the community, there is consistently a sense of having your team members behind you and on your side, ready to help when needed. The team is filled with bright, talented, and highly experienced professionals who strive to build each other up and bring out the best in everyone. The autonomy and respect you are entrusted with makes you feel confident and reassured in your work.
