Hard to answer alot of the questions as I was on a Short Term contract

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I was on a short term contract with Fortis, I can't speak to any benefits or perks the company provides. Friendly environment, very high commitment to safety, ergonomic paradise. I had a perfect work life balance, I never needed to think about work from when I left at night until I was there the following morning.

Pros

safety focus, ergonomic environment, work life balance

Cons

open concept

great place

It was a great place to learn about the utilities industry. FortisAlberta like any organization has its challenges but there is more good than bad things to say

Decent Company with toxic culture

The company is inclusive and co-workers very easy to get along with. There are utility industry training opportunities and given that the company is very simplistic in operations it's easy to pick up and understand. Promotions are not based on merit, some people are given a promotion, others have to apply for a promotion. No equality or fairness in decisions made by management Alberta only distribution company. So the business is a boring and not a lot of room to grow.

Pros

work/life balance is appropriate

Cons

Compensation is VERY low compared to peers

Good working relations

Canada is a layback country as compared to Corporate America. And this company is even more so. Very cordial and relaxed relationships. Actually I am more productive in this environment than an oppressive one.

Overstaffed and very earnest workplace

Fortis is clearly overstaffed, with many people underutilized and too many HR and corporate-ese policies and events. They are the kind of company who's staff cheerfully participate in many fundraising and other events because they have the time capacity to do so. Their accounts are very clean, all the people work on incremental improvements to processes and they are a good place to work with few self inflicted emergencies and ad hoc stuff. When I worked there after an oil and gas environment, I felt like I had about 8 full working days in a month. The rest of the time I surfed the web. Speaking of web, they have no wifi for staff, and their internet is locked down to the point of babysitting. It was annoying since we all have ways to circumvent this. The management is genuinely good. No power tripping, everyone very thoughtfully moves corporate goals down the line. You can tell as a regulated company they were unaffected by the downturn and can seriously trim staff, but hey, at least they provide jobs. The long hours are annoying. Even though they are offset by PD days, it's hard to sit there for 9 hrs and not have enough work.

Pros

Quiet work, very clean and professional, good culture

Cons

Long hours, offset by personal days off

Egocentric workplace with poor safety culture

FortisAlberta offers great salary and benefits but the workplace is rife with factionalism and backbiting. Employees are chronically overstressed and productivity is subpar.

Cons

workplace culture

This Company is not Loyal to Long Term Employees

Great company to work for if you are not older. My husband was just offered early retirement after working for Fortis for 36 years. Starting with Calgary Power, then Transalta, Utilicorp etc. Working his way up from power lineman to management. Working day and night for 36 years. He was just terminated without so much as a thank you. We suspect it was because he said no to a VOLUNTARY early retirement package. I am EXTREMELY angry at the way this company handled this. My husband worked extremely hard for your company. Many many nights of on call working in freezing weather to ensure the power was on. Many many family holidays and family outings delayed or missed because he had to stay loyal to his company. Not one single thank you from the higher ups for his long and loyal service to this company. Fortis Alberta you should be ASHAMED of yourself.

Pros

Hard to say anything good about this company after what they just did.

Cons

They will fire you when you get older. No company loyalty

CRM Contractor

I had an opportunity to work in programs that were new to me and it was there that I gained experience and confidence to create new templates that would be used company wide in the future.

Pros

One on One mentoring

I worked at FortisAlberta as a contractor, but I still felt welcome. I learned a lot about different places in Alberta.
