Stable work environment but not quite encouraging for who hopes to advance career

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Not as desirable as people think from outside. Hires a lot of temp/contract basis employee, low job security and high turnover rate, waste of resources on training and learning (lose-lose situation for employees and employer).

Excellent place to work!

Management could’ve been more supportive, overall good management. Benefits are amazing, you get a generous amount of time off. The pension plan contributions are quite high which can eat up a big chunk of the pay chek.

Each department operates separately. Could have good management or support in one department and not in another. The company is as good as the management you fall under

Excellent starter job for people new to working in a office or call center. Opportunity to develop and grow with the company unlikely.

This is a great job to gain experience working in customer service in a office/call center environment. But be warned, when being hired as a customer service rep you are at the bottom of a large pyramid. The opportunity to be promoted or work in another department is very rare. Scheduling is very strict. You have to work your life around their schedule, they will not accommodate. You have to book time off a year in advance, and just because you booked this time a year in advance does not mean it will be approved.  At first I felt like a valued member of a team but now I have realized I am Just another number. If you're looking for a stable job just get you to retirement this job would be ideal.  But keep in mind you'll be given more and more work to do without a pay increase. The thing that's mainly keeping me here is the pay is decent for not having to do any hard physical labour.

Pros

Weekends off. Medical and dental

Cons

Strict scheduling. Little opportunity to grow

Top heavy

So many managers at FortisBC. It appears good on the surface but there has been so many changes from the top down. Leadership is VERY disconnected from the workforce.

Toxic old boys club.

The people who advance are the back side kissing, yes people. If you are willing to place your integrity on the shelve, you will fit right in. They coerce loyalty and punish challenging the status quo. Disjointed union with no solidarity leading to members reporting and backstabbing on each other. Very good pay for the work.

Pros

Good wages.

Cons

Toxic management. Double standards. Weak union. Weaker HR.

Great team to work with / comfortable workplace

FortisBC was a great place to work. In Kelowna the office and team had a really relaxed environment. People and management were friendly and helpful when starting out.

Very stressful and disrespectful

Team managers are very rude, gossipy and bullying employees. You are watched every second, micromanaged to the point they time your washroom breaks, if you go three times they pull you in and give you the 3rd degree and warnings. Graveyard shifts are forced upon you. If you call in sick or are 1min late they call you into a union meeting and insult you.The union is not in the employee side it’s in the management side, you will not be supported by the union. The worst place I ever worked.

Pros

Retirement Benefit only.

Cons

Graveyard. Favouritism. Childish management

Not a good place to work as a non-union employee

A company that looks really great on your resume, but definitely lacking in some very crucial areas. Most co-workers are nice and are doing their best with a very dated company structure and culture. The cliques have already been established, and the lifers are fine sitting around all day chatting, eating snacks, and taking extra-long lunches, until they get to retire with their big pensions.Despite being an environmentalist at heart, it looked like a great chance to gain some valuable skills and I assumed as a large, well-known company they would be amazing to work for. When people are away or it gets extremely busy, it's the only time you feel valued; you're involved in all the meetings, contributing to their successes and praised for your hard work...until you're no longer urgently needed. Sometimes you get invited to team-building and fun department events, other times only the "real" employees attend. I've actually been UNINVITED to an event once, because they forgot I wasn't full-time. After speaking to others, there was no real reason why I shouldn't have attended other than they probably didn't want to pay for my time (as it was a very general topic). You are told that there is an opportunity to expand to part-time and maybe eventually full-time, but after they suck you in, you start to realize that it'll never happen. The project planning was very disorganized and not planned ahead of time, even by one week...so you can never plan any other contract work, projects, or appointments. They make you come in 3 days a week to work for only an hour, when it could've been -

Pros

Good cafeteria, office is nice from the outside, free parking, pay was ok (as I wasn't limited to their 5 level structure)

Cons

They treat contractors badly, office is dated looking from the inside and confusing to navigate, and you feel guilty working here as an environmentalist.

Very competitive, Union

The work overall isn't difficult. Many long time employees are resistant to new employees and alternative ideas about efficiency and productivity. Very old school work practices.

Pros

Salary

Cons

Hard to get permanent position

Caution - Toxic Waste Inside

I enjoy the pay and benefits; however, middle management in Logistics is uneducated, unqualified, and ignores complaints of bullying and harassment. FortisBC is the classic case of the most senior workers being promoted to middle management, as if those two skill sets are the same.

Pros

Salary and Benefits

Cons

Toxic Working Environment

Supportive culture

FortisBC is a utility so the company structure is hierarchical. Coworkers are supportive and overall culture is relaxed. The company takes good care of employees.

Good company to work

Coming from a different background, it took a bit of time to understand some of the work environment features but, over all a lot was learned and probably could have taken more time to learn more about the organization. Valuable learning experience.

Fine place to work

It was a good place to work. I had many different opportunities over the 25 years that I worked there. People can have several different careers if they choose to do that.

Mis management

Managers hired are not hired for their experience or suitability. Promotion is with experience or moving problem employees up and into different roles

Solid company, decent wages and benefits. One of the few companies left where you could work your entire career

Varied positions. Good team atmosphere. You can be part of a group or work on your own. Generally, lots of availabilities. Very safety conscious company. This is a union environment with 2 unions and Management represented.

Pros

Benefits, general atmosphere, Employee / public safety.

Cons

Some positions do require exceedingly long hours.

Good Work Life Balance, Work can sometimes be tedious

Good work life balance but some of the work given is less engineering related and more like a supply chain. Each person on a team works on the same thing consistently and passes it on to the next.
