Nepotism/favoritism
Stores (Former Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 23 April 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThe benefits/pay are okay - pay could be better though. If you are related to or a friend of a manager/supervisor - you will most likely be able to get a job at this company - and if you are really favoured - you will get ahead. Have observed this pattern over and over again. It kills any motivation for employees who are not in those categories.
Pros
coworkers were good people
Cons
cliques are rampant - but inclusion/diversity are preached

Limited growth opportunities
Customer Care Representative (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 16 February 2023
Union secures jobs but not much growth based on just performance which is a pro and a con at same time depending on where you stand. Less pay for amount if work compared to other unionized organizations
Pros
Union
Cons
Shift bidding

Great work life balance but pay is below industry average
Program Manager (Current Employee) - Kelowna, BC - 12 February 2023
I have enjoyed my time at FortisBC. There is good quality people working in the company, but the best people tend to not stay for long. Advancement opportunities within the company are good as long as you can work from Surrey. However, excellence is not recognized as the annual "performance" bonus and salary increases are dictated by the executive rather than by people's achievements.
Pros
Work life balance, benefits and vacation
Cons
Pay and it is a fossil fuel company

Toxic

Poor pay, micro manged, toxic work environment. Poor union. No way to move up within the company. Poor HR department. Disappointing overall work environment

Favouritism abounds, especially in senior leadership and HR
Senior Position in Support Services (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 19 January 2023
Tons of politics. Need to be favoured in order to rise to the top. Managing up is the #1 skill for success, and no one is held accountable for leaving chaos with direct reports in their wake. Very disappointed that employee surveys do not exist, ever. There is a prevailing fear that 'since we may not be able to action the results, we better not get employees to tell us if they are engaged or not'. Chicken and egg problem which is never going to be resolved. Select HR leaders, even those who outwardly champion inclusion and diversity, show immense favouritism, micro management and two-face natures. In general, peers and non leaders are fine, pay is good and office facilities are well maintained.
Pros
Office environment, hard workers, job security, intelligent and competent peers
Cons
politics, favouritism, poor managing down, hypocrisy

Pros

Jobs at Fortis BC
Great work experience
Manager (Current Employee) - Surrey, BC - 4 September 2022
All in all a pretty good work experience. The work life balance isn't always there, worked some evenings and weekends to keep up with work load. Staff are excellent to work with and lots of opportunities to progress inside the company.

If you are an Engineer trying to get into this company your Development will be compromised.
Engineer (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 25 August 2022
Life-Work balance is excellent. Engineering Management has been going downhill for the past 3 years. If you are an Engineer you will be tasked with Co-op work, or it could go to the other extreme where work is hectic. Director and Managers love to micromanage. Not the place to develop as an Engineer.
Pros
Good life-work Balance
Cons
Micromanagers, office politics from the 90s.

Fun and engaging
Administrator (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 17 July 2022
I loved working here! Did two seperate contacting jobs in two different depts. Managers were nice and supportive. Teams were fun to work with. Make sure you meet the application requirements for education as union jobs can't make special considerations.

Private monopoly where who you know is more important than what you know.
Electrician (Former Employee) - British Columbia - 13 June 2022
They tend to hire friends and family to management positions. Toxic work culture where the only avenue to move up is to look the other way on morally and technically suspect decisions and tell management what they want to hear. Their safety culture is paper thin. Mostly exists on paper. They don't let facts get in the way of their excellent safety record.

Stable work environment but not quite encouraging for who hopes to advance career
Financial Analyst (Former Employee) - Kelowna, BC - 24 March 2022
Not as desirable as people think from outside. Hires a lot of temp/contract basis employee, low job security and high turnover rate, waste of resources on training and learning (lose-lose situation for employees and employer).

Excellent place to work!
Accountant (Former Employee) - Vancouver, BC - 18 February 2022
Management could’ve been more supportive, overall good management. Benefits are amazing, you get a generous amount of time off. The pension plan contributions are quite high which can eat up a big chunk of the pay chek.

Excellent starter job for people new to working in a office or call center. Opportunity to develop and grow with the company unlikely.
Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) - Prince George, BC - 26 January 2022
This is a great job to gain experience working in customer service in a office/call center environment. But be warned, when being hired as a customer service rep you are at the bottom of a large pyramid. The opportunity to be promoted or work in another department is very rare. Scheduling is very strict. You have to work your life around their schedule, they will not accommodate. You have to book time off a year in advance, and just because you booked this time a year in advance does not mean it will be approved. At first I felt like a valued member of a team but now I have realized I am Just another number. If you're looking for a stable job just get you to retirement this job would be ideal. But keep in mind you'll be given more and more work to do without a pay increase. The thing that's mainly keeping me here is the pay is decent for not having to do any hard physical labour.
Pros
Weekends off. Medical and dental
Cons
Strict scheduling. Little opportunity to grow
