Pros
Great atmosphere, great people, average benefits, they do a lot of charity, they take care of their employees and show a lot of appreciation to us.
Cons
wages can be low.

Residential Property Tax Administrator (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON15 January 2019
I worked for there for 4 years. They provide extensive training for every department, job shadowing for any department should you be interested in transferring. There is always room for advancement within one department or in another.

Great place to work if you want a business career
Bilingual Customer Service Administrator (Current Employee) –  Toronto, ON5 October 2018
Good opportunities for advancement - you can change positions after one year, level headed management, great location, benefits from the first day. The work itself isn't too interesting but it is steady reliable work.
Pros
free candy
Cons
8:30 to 5:00 shift, squeezing an extra half hour out of your salary

It can be either a hit or miss
Underwriter (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON11 September 2018
Overall a really good company with great internal culture, location and staff, however, who you end up getting as your direct manager and the immediate team you have to work with can either make your work days really amazing or simply miserable.

Advice to management: you need to listen to your staff, be aware of your team surroundings and take actions to manage the team rather than wait around, hoping that problems will somehow disappear on their own.
Pros
Nice coworkers, social events, great office location
Cons
Unequal work assignment and treatment of some staff based on race, gender and perceived level of competence

Comfortable work environment
Investor Reporting Analyst, Loan Monitoring (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON31 August 2018
Interaction between departments/individuals was easy going, but with the inherent understanding that professionalism would ultimately prevail: very much results oriented.

Transferring between departments encouraged increased learning and understanding of the industry.

Comradery among employees encouraged cross-departmental assistance where needed.

Could be better
Specialist (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON21 May 2018
Pros:
- First National is big on Internal Transfers - Once you get in (traditionally as a Customer Service Admin) you can apply to any jobs there, and they have a preference for internal candidates.
- The culture is great - the teams are fun to be with, actually some more than others.

Cons:
- There is hardly any professional growth. It's a fairly flat organization, with Directors and Senior Managers - NOTHING IN BETWEEN - and then the rest of the jobs. Therefore, you are almost always going to be stuck in a Job Grade 3,4,5 and never grow to a higher job grade unless you become a Manager.
- The Managers do not have your best interests in mind - it's a dog-eat-dog world and they are only concerned about their growth and advancement, and not their employees.
- Traditionally job's pay around $35-37 as the starting salary. Every performance review gives you a 2% increase and don't even think about bonuses (if you don't work in a Sales job).
- Just by walking around the departments you can tell which ones are more fun (Sales, Underwriting, Customer Service, HR and Training) and which ones are toxic (Documentation, Property Taxes, Fire Insurance, Finance, Mortgage Accounting)

Analyst, Commercial Mortgages (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON26 October 2017
Friendly, smart, entrepreneurial, competitive productive work culture. Every day is different and constantly learning new things. Like any company, you have to make advancement your personal responsibility, not your manager's.

Fun place great people - lots of politic with upper managment
Employee (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON20 December 2016
If you know the right people you're likely to move up quick, if you don't then you'll have play the politics game.

Work life balance is great, benefits are awesome, most of all people are fun and nice. Friendly environment. If it weren't for all the politics and cliques, it would be the perfect place to work. Unfortunately, hard work doesn't get you recognized, who you know does.
