Productive and Fun
Outside Sales Representative (Former Employee) - Saint John, NB - 1 November 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedFastenal can be a fun and rewarding job. There is room for growth and lots of training for development. Unfortunately with the wrong management in place the job can be very stressful.

Jobs at Fastenal
If you are a woman steer clear
Customer Solutions Consultant (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 2 October 2023
If you are a woman I would steer clear of this company. The culture is that of a hockey locker room and leadership is a group of Old Boys who have never worked anywhere else in their life. You will begin to feel like you are finding success but they will only promote men who are most like the personalities that were promoted before them. They pay very low salaries and the culture has really gone downhill.

You can make most of the role but like any role you reach it max
GM (Current Employee) - Mississauga, ON - 3 September 2023
Fastenal as a company are good and the people I have met are excellent. Good people, job and good challenges. The pay could be a lot better than it is though. I have learnt a lot here from bottom to up and would recommend that to anyone. They teach you well and you do have make the most of your skill set of being hardworking, ambitious and also being a solution provider. Like any other job, there are some mundane tasks. The supply chain is also good, 95% of the time, product does come on time. But that 5% can be like Murphys Law, however this can be eradicated if you know how to work the channels to provide solutions. The people are great and definitely make the culture/environment. The only gripe with the company is that the pay doesn't reflect the stress in any role. The PT roles I feel the pay is decent. The Full-time roles, not so much, although it's higher on the commission side in terms of bonuses, it also can lead to renumaration not being consistent, which of course is dependent on growth and how stable the branch is. There will be good/bad days. If the base was higher with a fairly decent commission % this would be an amazing job.
Pros
Support, Culture, Internal promotions, Training, People
Cons
Pay on the Base side, not enough support at the branch level, constant feeling of feeling you haven't done enough

Excellent place to work for in my opinion.
Account specialist (Current Employee) - Saskatoon, SK - 3 August 2023
Coming from 8 years at another company where if you were sick you were made fun of and bullied from taking time off to me messaging my manager "Hey i'm not feeling too good but i can still do orders i think" and them telling me to just stay home and get better, that was kind of a shock for me, still is. As long as your partner that does orders isnt off on holidays you can take off whenever. The job culture is good and i'm very proud to work where i work. The pay is fantastic. There are some stressful times of course like with all jobs but i genuinely enjoy where i work and can see myself working here for a while :)
Pros
Free lunches, good PTO, Dont have to feel bad for calling in sick, Fun work environment

Room for Advancement
Branch Operations Manager + Sales Support (Former Employee) - Windsor, ON - 27 June 2023
Starting part-time leaves lots of room for advancement. Great starter job for a young professional just getting into the workforce. Base salary could be higher, but makes up for it in commission.
Pros
Good work/life balance
Cons
Can be physically challenging

Productive and fun workplace with table tennis
Sales associate (Current Employee) - valleyfield, QC - 14 April 2023
This place is great. Mind you, it's not for everyone. It's fast paced, action oriented, sales oriented and might be a bit stressful. Each location is managed independently so each review should matter for that specific location only. Valleyfield is great and the management team is solid. You might be left on your own more often than not but if you like challenges and accomplishments, this is for you!
Pros
Work-Life flexibility. All the required space to shine as a person
Cons
You are often left on your own to figure things out

Fun work place, really good culture
Supply Chain Assistant (Current Employee) - Burnaby, BC - 19 January 2023
It's really good place to work. Work culture is really good, everyone helps eachother whenever needed. Really good management. It is a good choice for entry level position, but there are not much opportunities for growth within the company.

Fast paced work environment
Operations Manager (Former Employee) - Southwestern, Ontario - 4 January 2023
Fastenal is a great place to work and gain experience to kick start a career elsewhere as you do learn quite a bit if you’re willing to do so. If you’re determined and out in the time (years) there is opportunities for advancement but you must show your worth and communicate with district managers on a regular basis. Most general managers have no say in your career advancement and do no more than sit behind a desk barking orders with little to no recognition for your efforts. Pay is well below industry average working in a branch, not to mention commission calculators change regularly to favour the company. Benefits are average, and the amount of paid time off is poor. Fastenal is no more than a great stepping stone for other career/job opportunities.

Good place to learn and start
GM (Current Employee) - Ontario - 26 November 2022
Growth opportunities narrow down/disappear as you grow. Watch your back always it is an extremely competitive work environment. No salary increase no performance reviews.

Great Place to work
Sales (Current Employee) - Ontario - 24 August 2022
Great if you like to multi task and work autonomously. Lots of learning potential and they promote from within. Relaxed environment but most take the career and customer experience seriously.
Pros
Monday to Friday, lots of support
Cons
Could be more ergonomically work friendly, US Company that does not really understand Canada Labour Laws

No structure
Sales Associate (Former Employee) - Greater Sudbury, ON - 16 August 2022
In theory this is a great company to work for. In reality from the top down there is little to no structure and therefore very stressful. I would not recommend anyone apply here.

Good Work Environment
Sales Associate/Representative (Former Employee) - Red Deer, AB - 8 August 2022
Great people to work with, the company really aims for team work. If you have the right team and the right management it can be a really fantastic company to work for. They respect work/life balance.

Workplace that used to be great, but has declined rapidly.
Sortation Associate (Former Employee) - Kitchener, ON - 31 March 2022
My time spent at Fastenal was honestly great the first year. But due to changes in management that occurred somewhat recently and the way things were being run, it rapidly became a bad place to stay employed at. From the department suddenly becoming overworked, and encountering days with absurd overtime one of the days being a morning shift that went from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (when we are scheduled to end at 2:00 pm). I understand that overtime is expected at Fastenal, but it came to the point where afternoon shifts that started at 4:00 pm started going until 12:00 am to the occasional near 1:00 am, when before they would only go until 10:30 pm - 11:00pm. I believe that this job once was different from the common warehouse job and where people would leave in a good mood. But due to the changes, the work environment had declined and people were leaving a lot more frequently. I wouldn't recommend this job to anyone other than those who only care about the pay.

Ok place to work
Sortation Associate (Former Employee) - Kitchener, ON - 16 March 2022
Good pay for what you're doing. Management can be kind of condescending and rude, but this depends on how hard of a worker you are. Be ready to work hard and sweat a lot. Good place to make friends but management can worsen the experience for sure.

good work life balance and management but not great pay
supply chain executive (Former Employee) - Chilliwack, BC - 24 February 2022
great management and work life balance. work isnt engaging but also not very stressful with a change of locations that can be refreshing. pay is not great but not terrible for the work you are doing. definitely opportunity to advance in the company, but not the greatest company for high paying end game jobs.

Good place to work if you have the right ambition.
B2B Sales Representative (Former Employee) - Kitchener, ON - 1 February 2022
Your boss may not be the nicest but there is opportunity for growth here. If you stay long enough you can even become a manager to your own Fastenal location.
Pros
room for growth
Cons
your manager might suck

No culture and always part-time so no benefits
Traffic (Former Employee) - Kitchener, ON - 17 September 2021
No culture and always part-time so no benefits, they also provide little relevant training and will not sponsor most education opportunities. Management is a clique that very few are allowed into.
