I felt proud to be an employee of such a great historical hotel
I started quite early in the morning, but I usually arrived 1/2 hour earlier to make sure that my area was set up arranged for the early departures. The Royal York has over 1365 rooms, so on days that we have huge conventions coming in, the front desk is very busy. The training that we received to be empathetic and good listeners was a great tool that I used daily during the check-in/check-out procedures. Management empowered us to do whatever was necessary to retain our guest if they went through any adverse situations during their stay and so we had a lot of repeat guests. I enjoyed interacting with and welcoming back frequent guests and having their rooms ready when they checked in. I also enjoyed meeting guests from different parts of the world. At the end of the day, after all the reports are finalized and my float is balanced and I am on commute back to Whitby, even though I am tired I feel a sense of accomplishment. I can go home and get recharged for another day.
Pros
Great health care benefits and hotel stay benefits
Cons
Long commute from Whitby

Has its Ups and Downs
When the workplace is staffed appropriately and managers are of an adequate caliber, the hospitality experience here is second to none. The respect, and love we have for each other is the same we give to the guests. However, when we were understaffed and managers were not up to par, the workplace culture become toxic quickly. I'm sure this can be said of anyplace however, and shouldn't dissuade you from pursuing employment.
Pros
Opportunities for advancement, benefits, free food, amazing workplace when staffed appropriately
Cons
Quickly devolves into a toxic mess when understaffed
