Disappointed experience
Service Consultant (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 27 September 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedPlease apply for any position except for the Contact Center, especially RRO or HAT (Encor by EPCOR). Pay is decent for the job, but also the work is very stressful and not worth the hassle at all. You definitely will go crazy if you work more than 30 hours/week, and you are the lowest minions of this company. I cried 5 times within 2 months when I first started on the floor, and sometimes I still break down and cry in the morning before going to work. Up until now I have been feeling like I'd rather to jump off from their building than going to the queue, so I had to send in the resignation letter to release myself from this nightmare. The queue has been extremely crazy this year due to the ridiculous raise in regulated electricity rate so you will get a lot more of angry customers, and the management is such a very selfish joke, well, at least my manager and my team lead are both kind of new to their positions so I am not sure if the others are better. Upper management will act like they care about agents but in fact they do not appreciate you at all. Everything is about business; you will get constant unnecessary stress from them about your STAT report. Do not believe what they tell you about as long as you are doing your best because your report is the most important thing. They will remind you that they understand it is a difficult time for us, encourage agents to take time with customer and suggest you to take mindful moments between each call just to swipe away our frustration when we bring it up, but they calculate every single minute in the average handle time report, -
Pros
Pay rate, benefits
Cons
selfish management, no humanity, stressful

Great company to work for
Service Consultant (Current Employee) - Work from Home - 31 July 2023
Epcor focuses a lot on mental well being and supporting their employees. There is great communication between teams, and from management. I find the culture open and playful, where you can be yourself and have fun, while maintaining respect for one another.

Jobs at EPCOR
this is not a good company
Systems Analyst (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 14 June 2023
overpaid upper management ignore the mayhem that exists in the lower ranks. mid level management don't work very hard and their arrogance coupled with incompetence is a bad mix. I would not recommend this company unless you are lazy.
Pros
you don't have to work hard to get ahead.
Cons
highly political, many management are desperate to hold on to their jobs, working people could be axed anytime.

Amazing coffee and great management.
Energy Services Agent (Former Employee) - Downtown office, Edmonton, AB - 14 June 2023
EPCOR deserves all the accolades it receives about how great it is to work for this company. you are always supported and your manager is very easy to speak with and emails are responded to in the same day if not the same hour. Everyone is professional and the lunch room views are spectacular. The area is a bit sketchy but keep your head up and you will be fine. Parking is paid but they have a fantastic location for transit right by the Roger's Place LRT.
Pros
Snacks and unlimited top of the line coffee, convenient downtown location, excellent management with raise and promotion options.
Cons
Sketchy unhoused population congregate outside at the mission, late hours.

Nepotism prevails all else.
Utility Worker (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 30 April 2023
The only way to get a job or move up in this company is by knowing someone. And if you don't, you won't get anywhere. Hard work means nothing to them.
Cons
Management

Poor management
Systems Analyst (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 8 December 2022
Epcor is exactly what you’d expect of a monopoly. The management is awful. They take credit for my work, cover for each other’s incompetence, suck the positive energy out of a room. I will be retiring soon, I won’t feel like I contributed much and will be happy to never see these people again.
Pros
Nothing stands out.
Cons
Poor Management, projects are poorly managed, blame goes downhill, combative atmosphere, put on a fake smile and smile and nod atmosphere.

Good Salary, Benefits and Training But Management Not Very Responsive to Employees
Project Engineer (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 25 October 2022
EPCOR is a decent place to work with good salaries, benefits and training opportunities. The work was interesting and rewarding. Lots of rigid policies and procedures, frequent reporting. They have a very hierarchical management structure and do not solicit much employee input. They just implement things from the top down. Safety is important, but so many policies are being driven by over the top excessive "safety" requirements.
Pros
Good salary and benefits
Cons
Rigid policies with little employee input

Would definitely recommend
Analyst (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 16 February 2022
My typical day at work starts with morning stretches, start of day maintenance tasks, projects, mid-day maintenance tasks. Sometimes, there are meetings and trainings within the week. Management is flexible and considerate of personal life. Workplace culture is collaborative, safety-focused and an emphasis on employee health (in all aspects)
Pros
High-salary compared to competition due to union, flex-based benefits allows customization based on personal needs, wellness account, personal development account (formal courses paid by EPCOR), donation to charity of choice if volunteering more than 30 hours, morning stretches, free parking, delicious coffee and tea choices, gym and shower on site, work-life balance
Cons
Job tenure happens after 10 years

Absolutely brutal management
IT Analyst (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 30 December 2021
This company has terrible management. The ethics guidelines are not adhered to, lying is acceptable behaviour, and compensation and advancement is based on favouritism, not competency. This is the worse company I ever worked for.
Pros
None come to mind
Cons
Overpaid management with poor ethics, The corporate executives are oblivious about what is going on downstairs, It is a very unhappy and threatening atmosphere.

Down goes the ship
Utility Worker (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 21 September 2021
Management is non existent. Project management is sub par to say the least. Very disorganized out in the field. No accountability at all. You can work as much OT as you want as it never gets denied. Upper management has no idea what goes on in the field.
Pros
Paid very well
Cons
No future with company

Ifs and buts
Financial Analyst (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 21 September 2021
EPCOR is a extraordinary organization. The business has a robust and comprehensive set of standards for their agents which are consistently presented as part of the businesses core beliefs. Their engagement within the community is strong and the business itself is structured to care about how it does business. However, the business is held back by a lack of engagement from the management team on what is truly meant by the policies that exist within the business. It is one thing to have a policy in place within a business; it is another to act based on that policy. The expectations for the roles are aligned with the overall attitude of the organization, which is to say that the business conducts itself like the quasi governmental agency that it is. For some this will be a great fit, for others it will not. Be forewarned, the business does not want employees who challenge the status quo, but rather employees that follow the rules and don't question how the business conducts itself.
Pros
Fun Team Activities, Relaxed Work Environment
Cons
Poor Leadership Team, Not Open To New Ideas

Nice place to work. Good pay.
Utility Worker (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 5 April 2021
Great benefits, good people to work with. However the union structure protects lazy coworkers in many departments. Management couldn't manage their way out of a cardboard box constantly changing crew structures in an attempt to streamline what, I do not know. The best equipment and tools and great home work life balance. I'd go back and work there if I could.
Pros
Equipment, fair pay, union, worklife balance.
Cons
Poor performance by many, union, seniority system, they do not fight to keep good people.

Weak Bully environment in Drainage PMO
Drainage PMO (Former Employee) - Drainage PMO - 29 September 2020
Management lacks any form of leadership, insecure, and hypocritical. Constantly changing work guidelines along with increased criticism and belittling. Always withholding required information to do ones job. There has been increased turnover within the PMO for a reason and this is a direct result of poor management. You will never succeed when management doesn't want you to.
Pros
Pay
Cons
Long hours, hypercritical, fault-finding, belittling, underwork, setting up for failure, lack of knowledge sharing

Brutally awful company
Administration (Former Employee) - Edmonton - 26 July 2020
I would suggest anyone thinking of working at Epcor run as fast as you can in another direction. This is a sleazy company. Worst place I ever worked.
Pros
No night shift
Cons
Terrible management

Mgrs & foreman -just not right fit!
Product Sales Manager (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 20 January 2020
I was there 2000 & the foreman were useless! I was in sales would send emails & they wouldn't reply. Even some mgrs. were over there head in their job position-didn't deserve the title was just given it. Apparently some foreman & mgrs today In 2019 are still useless! The union culture for some is a poison & some love that type of culture. Really good benefits, once your in your in even if not a good worker.

Worked with a good bunch of guys
Utility Worker (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 14 January 2020
Pretty hard to get on with EPCOR Utilities. Depending on where you are placed, you could be pigeonholed with no opportunity to advance. Nepotism is evident everywhere. People with multiple DO NOT REHIRE recommendations are hired over other competent employees.

Good for Certain Personalities
Contact Centre Agent (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 28 November 2019
If you have a thick skin, like being robotic, and don't care about people, the call centre could just be for you. It is a lovely place to work, but constant surveillance, and pushing to be faster and faster at handling calls with no errors can take a toll on one. After six months, I started dreading coming to work, so I left for something in the public sector, where profits for an essential service do not conflict with my Marxist leanings. It was not for me, to be sure, but some of my fellow new-hires have done really well in this callous environment. Maybe it speaks to their lack of humanity. I don't know.

Watch your back ...
Engineer (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 2 November 2019
Terrible managers ... highly incompetent and will not hesitate to throw you under the bus for failures that are their responsibility. Stressful work environment. Lack of transparency. People get fired all the time.
I would not work here again -- despite there being good people/co-workers and good work-life balance opportunities. Not worth the mental stress of dealing with bad managers, a complicit HR department and a culture that revolves around backstabbing others to get ahead.
Just sad that good people who work hard get treated so badly ... avoid!
