I have been a class 1 operator for over 30 years, and this would be my helpful opinion.
First and foremost would be, to give your drivers, trucks that are highly maintained. Make policy, pre and post trip inspections by your drivers, and 1/3 of your major problem is now solved.
Pay your drivers proper wages. They should be starting at no less than $25.00 /hour to start! This has just solved another 1/3 of your problem and no doubt 97% of your driver turn-around problem.
And finally, no driver should turn a wheel without a swamper in the passenger seat, no matter how extensive, the work load of the day was about to be, period! Final 1/3 solved. By making these changes, alone, your entire staff will have a morale boost of approximately 96% and you will find a profit boost of approximately 67% over all.
Maybe 4 hour shifts on the weekend. and earlier shifts during the week
