Not Great

Not a great place to work. They pay their employees next to nothing even if you have qualifications and experience. There is not advancement even though they will constantly tell you that there is. All of the equipment is outdated or broken and they wont spend the money to fix it or replace it. Youre pushed to get production done regardless of safety even though they pretend to have safety as a core value. Corporate is an absolute joke, they have no ide what they are doing. Once guys get experience they leave because they will get paid way more at other companies. in the eyes of corporate you are easily replaceable. They will tell you that you can refuse jobs if you dont feel capable of doing it but will then push you to do the job and try to guilt you into it. would not recommend this company to my worst enemy.

Pros

youll mostly work with good guys

Cons

pretty much everything else

Davey Tree

The "Experts" in the tree industry... Ive never been at such an unexperienced company. They pay very low for the industry. They are a good stepping stone company because they will train you. But you will be expected to Top trees, cut corners and they just take advantage of people who are just trying to get experience.During covid they have made most employees use personal vehicles. Which they pay 25cents a kilometer. The fair rate provided by the Ontario government is 67cents a kilometer. If your vehicle gets damaged on the work site you are on your own. They have been handling covid so poorly shuffling crews around in every which truck. No nightly cleaning on high touch surfaces. Just brutal ok how they handled this pandemic.Davey Trees saftey record is absolutely garbage because they don't treat people with experience like they are worth a dime so everyone leaves after 2-5 years. Corporate is slimey and will do everything they can to pass the blame onto you while preaching saftey but get it done or we are sending you home and writing you up. Ok benefits, good stock plan and rrsp, but you probably won't stay long unless your as slimey as the guys up in corporate. Sure go to Davey tree fresh out of school but stand up for yourself and document everything or else you will get burnt by someone just trying to make a buck.

Pros

Good entry level experience, training and decent benefits

Cons

Poor management, unexperienced sales and management, poor pay, poor quality of work, lots of time pressure because of inexperienced salesmen, use of your own vehicle for work with little compensation

Treated like a number.

Bosses yell at you if you make a mistake, threaten you with your job, pay is not enough to live on. Training wasn’t done as the day consisted of high volume of production leaving little training/instructions to move up in knowledge. Pay was told one rate and then payday was 20% lower than expected. Days off will never happen if requested, don’t get hurt as they will do everything to make it look like nothing forced to work the next day to avoid WCB paperwork. Boss yells, cursing out crew. Payroll isn’t done on time and you can wait up to weeks after you quit for partial payments.Avoid this company

Pros

Some gear provided

Cons

Equipment is garbage and when breaks the blame is in the employees

I was temporarily laid off for medical reasons

Unfortunately no matter how hard I worked and how much the company liked me they laid me off due to medical reasons until I could get a doctors signature to return to work. This has proven to be difficult for me and I have been laid off for just over a month now after working for Davey for over a year with no safety issues on the job and very good customer service, site safety, crew safety, site organization/setup & takedown, all the company necessities I have but unfortunately I am what feels like fired because I missed my medication one day. Very upsetting

Large corporate company that offers low wages and high stress work environment

You get to work with a lot of great guys but this really isn't a company to stay at long term. More of a "get your foot in the door" job if you have no previous experience in the industry. There is a huge disconnect between corporste head office, middle management and the field staff. For the majority of the field staff we are just a number to everyone above us. We are paid and treated accordingly with that, below average.Overall its stressful to work for a billion dollar company that cant keep saws or trucks in good repair and cant manage to pay employees on time.

Pros

Field staff you work with are great

Cons

Poor wages, bad management, broken equipment, falling apart trucks, disconnect between management and staff

Hard work

Management doesn't care about its workers. Your just a slave with two feet and a heart beat. Pay is ok though. Outrageous work expectations in the harshest of weather conditions.

Management

Middle management is so old school and doesn’t give anyone real training. You are just a number to them NOT a person. They say we are all about safety but they are NOT all all. Safety meeting are a joke. You just sign your name on a paper and they talk about stuff that has nothing to do with our safety and if you bring a safety concern to them watch out you will be fired. They will find something else to fire you for. Equipment is all garage and trucks are even worse. You are only good for the company if you will do as they say not as you should. 100% worse job ever. PLEASE dont apply here there are so many other tree companies that care more.

Pros

Some of the employees.

Cons

Everything above and sooo much more

Good group of guys poor everything

Good guys to work with, pay is terrible for what you do. Equipment is rough shape. Did not really get training. Just paper stuff no on site Had to Supply my own safety glasses upon 1st day. ( I wear contact lenses ) You can work short days or long days. Working in the heat kills you NO AC in the trucks to cool off after a job. NO heat breaks to cool downs you allowed to sit down to drink or whatever to help but no way to actually cool off. I only worked for about 2.5 weeks and that was long enough for me

Pros

Good guys friendly.

Cons

Pay, weather, no AC no training

Great place to work guys are great to work with

Fun job Davey was a great place to start in forestry and tree care. They try to get you the equipment you need. No top handles used at Davey unless you bring your own. Managment is newer and they are in a learning experience.

Pros

Work all year

Cons

Weekend works and long hours if you choose

Worst Place Ever!

I worked as a Billing Clerk at the corporate office in Ancaster, ON and let me say, the job description is not at all what you expect. The work was sooooo slow! I had to beg my co-workers for work, otherwise I sat idle at my desk. I didn't have a computer for two months and had to use someone else's, which was disturbing their work. I didn't even have a desk chair! They ordered one and I had to assemble it! Pathetic! Everyone just mainly helps with payroll, and not really doing what their job title is. Management is horrible!! They constantly watch over your shoulder like they don't trust you. The payroll supervisor has the biggest attitude on earth! She speaks so rudely to her staff and gave me attitude (that's one reason I don't work there anymore). Work culture is a joke. If you're one minute late, they give you a lecture. We're humans, we cannot always be perfect. Also, you're underpaid for you qualifications. Please save yourself the hassle and not work there. No one should be treated the way I did.

Pros

None

Cons

Everything I said

overall not a great place to work.

I worked out of the edmonton office for about 7 years. running various types of crews at times. management openly brags about the "@#$% list" of employees they treat poorly compared to the rest. raises will be dangled in front of you in order to get more production. the professionalism among the supervisors and managers was disappointing, and although D tree as a company has amazing safety procedures and protocols, production is what matters at the end of the day and if following these procedures and protocols means lower production for your crew, you might get demoted or moved to more undesirable jobs. The only savior for this particular branch of D tree is some of the outstanding UTW/ and UTT's. Many experienced, quality tree workers have opted out of the company to try to find better treatment elsewhere.

Pros

exciting work

Cons

production pressure, lack of safety, management, long hours

Very Unorganized

Everyday coming in was a mess. Never knew where you were going to be working or who you were working with. Communication is the worst here. You can work your butt off as much as you want and not see a single praise or even get noticed by managment. Co-workers were great people to work with. But ultimately everyone is out for themselves. Actual work is up and down. Somedays will be a cake walk others youre literally breaking your back. Expect to lift heavy logs into the back of a truck constantly.

Could be more productive if crews have a little more supervision, and weather doesnt get in the way

Friendly staffs and crews, could be stressful if youre a foreman as there are a lot of responsibilities with little compensation. Days or weeks could be slow if its rainy or windy, so target hours for overtime might not be met, but the allowance could some times make up for the slow days.

Poor work enviroment

Poor management. Management does not have prior field experience and usually is less experienced than workers. Work orders are confusing. Lots of talk from managers they dont like the hire people with kids. Smoking in the work place and vehicles. Low prices on quotes. No job security, lay offs in winter. Regular equipment break downs. poor morale, low educated workers
