On call, split shifts

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Worked here for quite a while. If you have a family this job is not ideal because you work a lot of split shifts through being on call almost always.Management is not great and not into change.

Some nice people to work with but overall avoid working with this company! Continuous cuts for employees work/life balance and terrible culture

What is the best part of working at the company? The schedule, expenses, and doing very little for a nice paycheque. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The culture and management is terrible! Lots of harassment and boys club to deal with in this company. Horrible union that doesn’t support the employees. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The worst culture and company I have ever worked for in my career. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Different start times, stressful work, long travel, and early layoffs

Great Job

Pay and benefits excellent, moral very low, no schedule when working spareboards or pools. No personal days only 1 earned day given every 28 day period taken on a specific allotted slot per month.

1 question wrong and they let you go

As a conductor trainee you get payed great an get to see what it's like to wok with trains they are fun great and dangerous. Unfortunately the dream of getting in to trains is ruined daily by the simple fact that getting 1 question wrong on a test means that your entire time there is finished. The rail roads always say they have a hard time retaining people. And that about 10% of new fully certified conductors stay working there for more then a year. But let top talent go for simple mistakes.Having good reviews from your trainers and great reviews from your on the job training means nothing. When you get 1 question wrong during the exam means no job for you. You pay union fees even though the union cant do anything for you.2 people from a class of 26 made it to being. Fulltime conductor

Pros

Excellent pay

Cons

Exam is 100% or bust, make sure you have a job tofall back to

Love my job but poor morale and management

Love what I do but Management is not good. Try to set you up for failure, training is inadequate, tell everyone safety is a priority but don't really mean it, they hide in the bushes and any minor issues result in suspensions, watch you on cameras, harass you anytime you are off sick even if you are off sick for the first time in years, always on call for work if you miss 1 call in years more discipline. If you value your personal life stay away as you will never get time off.

Good Pay and Good guys to work with, but garbage management

The guys you work with, the pay you get, and the limited time off in between was the only good part about this place. There is so much wrong with this company, and it starts with management in Calgary, and trickles down. Americans should NOT be running a Canadian company. They try to implement their way of life in Canada, which does not work. They don't care though, since they're making millions of dollars. No employee appreciation. A lot of idiots in manager roles that got there because they have connections. Always looking for ways to be negative towards you. The list is never ending. There is a reason they have a very high turnover rate.If you're intelligent, don't work here.

Pros

Pay, 24 hours off between each shift

Cons

10 hours on a train, both ways, stuck at a bunkhouse for over 8+ hours minimum, management is toxic, RTC incompetent, and alot more

ok

Working at here was a truly rewarding experience, characterized by a multitude of reasons that made it an exceptional professional journey. Firstly, the company's commitment to fostering a positive work culture was commendable. The supportive and inclusive environment provided opportunities for personal growth and collaborative teamwork, which greatly contributed to my job satisfaction. Moreover, the company emphasized continuous learning and development, offering numerous training programs and resources, which allowed me to enhance my skills and stay updated in my field. The company's dedication to innovation was another notable aspect. It encouraged employees to think creatively and to contribute their ideas, making me feel that my insights were valued. Additionally, the leadership at XYZ Company was exceptional. The management was approachable, open to feedback, and focused on empowering employees to excel. This, in turn, created a sense of trust and respect within the organization.

Nothing good to report

The company is currently hiring anyone, forcing them to qualify (whether you're ready or not) and forcing untold amounts of work on each individual's shoulders.Eventually they will start laying "fails" on you so managers can earn a bonus or to facilitate constructive dismissal. But you're qualified, so your fails are your fault. You can expect to not earn what they list in their ads, to be entrapped in a culture of gross negligence, forget having anytime off. They do not negotiate with the Unions unless forced by the government. They will take advantage of you and lie to you in order too put feet on the ground.

Pros

None

Cons

The hostile environment

Just another job

Not a great place to work, pay is ok. Depending on department you work in could be very stagnating. No career upward movement no matter how hard and smart you work.

Toxic Dumpster Fire

Incompetent, clueless management that can only build themselves up by tearing you down. With the many layers of unnecessary managers who feel they must micro manage everything, they rarely achieve any progress ,but all failures are the lowly employees fault.

Not recommended. If you must, go in, make some money and get out as soon as possible.

What is the best part of working at the company? The pay is really good, you will make some real incomeWhat is the most stressful part about working at the company? They send you out to deal with jobs that you have no idea on how to do them as a junior employee. The training time is not enough for you to feel confident and they want you to learn while working and figure it out by your self. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? It is a very toxic work environment, the company is against the employees and union and try to take as much as they can from the workers.Everyone complains about the company and they hate to be working for CPKC but they stay because of the home high pay. What is a typical day like for you at the company? You never know what kind of day you will have, it will always be different. You have no control over anything, not even when you want to take time off, if you are even entitled to take some time off. They own you, your time, your life and your freedom.

Cpkc culture has changed over the last decade into a place of intimidation

I have never seen a company work so hard to hire people and then in turn try to fire them without even giving employees the necessary training to succeed in their position than at cpkc. The culture has changed over the last decade into intimidation/fear based. There is no room for mistakes or errors and you will be punished accordingly, in a manner that has no consistency. Besides salary/benefits, there's not much I can say good about CPKC.

Pros

Salary/benefits

Cons

Work life balance

Challenging and rewarding.

Interesting and challenging work. Sometimes your doing scheduled maintenance, sometimes troubleshooting/repairs and sometimes engine overhauls. Pros: decent pay, lots of OT and it is bankable up to 48hrs, good pension and share purchase plan where company will match 30% dollar for dollar you invest. Cons: Horrible management, lack of support systems to research tasks if you've never done them before, lack of specialty tools and tool management, facility maintenance is horrible, discipline system- (management is always trying to chase you out of your job). Lastly, there are many safety rules. I'm happy enough to stay the course but always keep an eye out for something better. If you're new, it is a union environment. Days off and premium shifts are based on seniority. You will either be on nighshift or afternoons and won't see a regular weekend like your friends and family for 3-8 years until you have enough seniority to see a partial weekend.

Toxic culture using safety to manage employees out the door.

What is the best part of working at the company? The best part of working at Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway is going home. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The most stressful part of working at CPKC railway is being there. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The work environment is toxic and the culture is geared towards managing people out the door. " Trust no one and trust no one ", as quoted by management. What is a typical day like for you at the company?A typical day is a regimented military style start with job briefing, working buzzer to buzzer ( breaks are watched to the second) and no appreciation for a job well done - ots expected because it's what you get paid to do.

Complete Joke

Don't bother working here. Job is an absolute joke. First 5 years will be Midnight's with Tuesday/Wednesday off. Management fluctuates frequently so it's a roll of the dice whether you'll have good leadership or not.
