Staff Accountant (Current Employee) – Kingston, ON – 31 August 2017
Great place to work, friendly and helpful coworkers. Every day has something different, from various personal and corporate tax issues, to accounting related issues and file preparing. While hours are very busy during personal tax season, the freedom gained during slower times in the summer and fall more than make up for that busy season.
While taking professional designation, senior staff are very helpful and supportive, willing to answer any questions with both material and the process.
Environment that is supportive of your professional growth and treats you like family
Manager (Current Employee) – Durham Region, ON – 23 August 2017
A typical a day of work would consists of preparing year-end files, a mix of audit, review and compilation files. Learning is highly encouraged and promoted. You are asked your interests and allowed to participate in professional development courses to further your interests.
Management always has an open door policy and encourages corroboration with management throughout file preparation.
Workplace culture is one of accountability and celebration. People are held accountable for their actions and are celebrated when jobs go well or for major life events.
The hardest part of the job is busy season hours. You may need to work up to 60 hours a week, but this is offset during the summer by 1/2 day Fridays and an annual Christmas closure.
Staff Accountant (Current Employee) – Durham Region, ON – 15 August 2017
At Collins Barrow Durham, partners and managers are keen on assisting staff in planning and reaching their personal and career goals. As a result, it is a great place to advance your career!
As with most accounting firms, tax season is busy and overtime is expected. However, banked overtime can be carried forward and used as additional time off during the slower months of the year. Staff also have the opportunity to work flexible hours.
Partners, managers, and staff are all very friendly and make time for staff who have questions or who just need someone to chat with.
Great place to learn but mostly learn-as-you go approach with minimal training
Staff Accountant (Current Employee) – Toronto, ON – 19 May 2016
As expected, hours during busy season are long. There are a minimum amount of hours that you have to bill during this season, so it becomes very stressful at times. Turnover at the firm is extremely high. Expectations of staff are very high as well and the company provides close to no training. The pay is also well below average for a large public accounting firm. However, colleagues are amazing. Almost everyone is on the same boat, so the environment is friendly at that level, which is very important when you're working long hours.
Long hours & no banking of hours (for the location I'm at)
Peterborough office --> Overworked, underpaid, and fired after busy season
Staff Accountant (Former Employee) – Peterborough – 6 May 2013
In the Peterborough office, no one schedules work. So the typical day is begging partners for work. If you aren't one of their favourites, then you won't get a lot of jobs, and in turn will be fired once the busy season is over. I've seen it happen to so many people, including myself.
The partners are unprofessional and extremely rude. They will talk behind your back and make jokes about you when you aren't around. I can't believe how some of those people are partners. The office morale is terrible. People are just counting down the days to get out of there.
Very low paying, like SERIOUSLY low paying. And the health plan is bad, there isn't even a dental plan.
I've worked in other firms and Collins Barrows Kawarthas was BY FAR the WORST place ever, even by audit firm standards.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. They will lie and say anything to get you to relocate to Peterborough. They provide no training, even though they promise so much of it.
Complete waste of time.
free lunch in out of town jobs
long hours, low pay, will be fired after busy season, unprofessional partners, crazy gossip
US Senior Tax Manager (Former Employee) – Toronto, ON – 5 July 2012
Have to ask for tax information everyday or work wont be completed on time. Administered all aspects of the US tax program and trained co-workers in the office and other offices. co workers not very friendly to work with, managed to know their personality and deal with them accordingly. Making sure the others finished the final product and out of the door on time. Dealing with clients direclty for information that could not be provided by other co-workers in order to complete the work.
